I've never been a Ford kinda guy especially from a automotive technician point of view but theres something about the Raptors bring out the inner child in me.
What off-road worthy vehicles do you like, from an automotive technician point of view? You probably have the best inside knowledge of what's good and what's bad.
@@adampolselli597 its more of what I prefer to work on and reliability. I've worked on planty of ford and to be honest they cut corners with some of the parts quality. Have no experience with the Raptors can speak just love the idea of them. Something reliable for offroad can be difficult to answer depending on what you want to pay and how hardcore you want to go etc......
@behexen250 oh I wouldn't buy one they look awesome and I'm sure they're good at what they do. But personally wouldn't buy a ford. I dont live near a dessert anyways so I have no use for a raptor. The offroading I do your better of in a midsize truck or jeep.
behexen250 I’ve own multiple ford, Gm, and Toyota products, Toyota is by far the best but they have no soul, Ford are usually pretty easy to trouble shoot and most things can be done at home, newer Gm’s on the other hand make you want to tear your hair out.
I work at a Ford dealership, have driven both of these generation trucks... The newer one has more tech and a slightly better laid out interior, and I think it looks better. But the older one just feels a little more special, it's hard to describe it. I think the 6.2L V8 has a lot to do with it, MUCH better sounding engine to go along with the aggressive look. Both very cool trucks!
I have an 2011 Molten Orange Raptor, super cab, loaded. Full stainless works exhaust, headers to the dual tail pipes. No V 6 Raptor sounds like mine. Pro tuned, BFG Radial KO 2-35s on bead lock rims, K&N CAI, numerous bolt ons too. You can keep the new ones, I get compliments on mine every single time I take it out. To each their own.
If you listen closely, he's NOT just trading trucks for the (less powerful but better sounding) V8 engine. He's planning a lot of mods that would not be "financially" wise on that new $70k truck. He's buying the older one because it won't be a financial loss to do major modifications. He wouldn't be getting $60k for his 1 year old truck if he had major modifications that altered it much from factory. He'll need to do engine work to the older one to get the performance of the 3.5 EB. I just happen to have a 3.5 EB in my personal truck and a 6.2 V8 in my work truck. So I get to drive both on a regular basis. 😁
Actually if you read between the lines he's saying it wouldn't make sense to put a bunch of money into a truck with a V6 because it has limited potential.
NYCnMiami go to five star tuning web site ,u can turn up the boost on a turbocharged engine there is a 100psi boosted 4cly in a red demon that’s running low 7s in the 1/4mile watch Cletus McFarland
Both engines are good.. the 3.5 has tones of power and potential for a lot more.but at the same time I agree that having a nice sounding V8 seems more fitting for a badass truck like the raptor
@@williamchapman2434 I do watch Cleetus. I haven't seen the red demon tho. I told my bro in law about 5- star and he got one of their free tunes for his programmer. I haven't made that jump yet. Although I found out my truck shuts off just over 105 tho recently. Can't have that so I might get a tuner. Probably one that loads 5- star tunes nicely
@@FireChicken37 I have an 11 Platinum with a 6.2L. Look forward to starting and driving it every morning! Last owner installed a great sounding exhaust too!
I did the same thing! Sold my black Gen 2 for a white 2014 Gen1. The Gen 2 has beautiful amenities and features but does NOT have the engine sound of the V8 Gen 1. Love my 2014.
And remember, the power rating eventually went to 415HP. Ford decided to go off of 93 rating vs the 91 octane rating. It was like 408 for 87 octane. 411 with 91 octane. 415 with 93 octane. Oh and I love my 13’ Tuxedo Black Raptor. Gets compliments all the time.
I 100% agree with you. Unless you live 1000 feet above sea level, there is no reason for the twin-turbo. In the South, unless you live is Asheville, NC, you do not need a turbo. I hate to say this, but I bet the V8s are going to skyrocket in value. Just when I wanted to buy one.....:( I would repaint the Gen 1st to white.
15-20% financial loss after one year of ownership is massive for that 2019. The dealership is going to turn around and sell that truck for just under 70, I guarantee it.
I mean, that's what a dealership does, buys your car for less than its actual value so they can make a decent profit off of it. He could have easily made back a lot more of his money if he sold it himself, but clearly he didn't want the hassle.
Congrats on the Gen1! Another thing that sets apart the SE's from others: different colored beauty rings on the beadlock rims. It's a fairly common mod for us non-SE owners to get the beauty rings powdercoated. Do you think you'll be able to swap that 3rd brake light over from a Gen2 to a Gen1? And .... between 0 and 5: how many seconds did it take you to dump that hideous tonneau cover? :)
Robert Glastra whoa I didn’t know that. Thanks for the info. I have already looked into selling it... I’m doing a family road trip soon but that thing is on the market as soon as I get back
I have the first gen raptor, what makes NA more desirable? Its a great truck but you can just feel it gargle gasoline, especially on a cold start Lol. With forced induction you gain a bit of efficiency with the higher compression ratio, and still have the power when you need it.
Both nice rides. I agree, if you want to modify and run it hard its better to do it on the cheap side. Even though 33 large isn't cheap. Great content, love the channel and these segments.
The fact that the current Raptor doesn’t have a V8 is no handicap at all. That High Output EcoBoost (450 HP, 510 LB-FT) blows the old V8 out of the water.
Tyler McLean nah mate I have owned several cars and used them in a harsh environment, boosted engines lose huge amount of power when it’s over 100F. I didn’t jump into this statement without being through this experience.
I love the sound of a v8, but the newer Raptor is such an improvement. Besides my wife would appreciate the quite of the v6. With the turbo I certainly would not be short on power.
I have both Trucks in super cab configuration. I prefer the Gen2! They are completely different trucks! The Gen 2 is way more fun off roading, the Gen 1 is more fun on the streets.
Yeah, a stock Gen 2 has won RaptorX two years in a row against some really built Gen 1s. I used to struggle to think how Ford would improve on the Gen 1, but now that I got a Gen 2 it is hard to look back
If you were ever wondering who the heck is shelling 70k for a pure joy ride truck this video gives a pretty good idea. And I thought ( clearly wrongly) that skiing is an expensive hobby!
@@trentopinto5 Even if you don't consider racing a sport (wtf), you still are not even close. Hockey is amazingly expensive. Just the catching glove alone for a goalie can be over $500. That's a factory glove too. Now add in ice time, league fees, and the rest of the gear... easily can fall into the "wow, that's way too much" category.
No he's right. Buying a used vehicle always a risk. But a raptor is one of those special used that's a double edge sword. Like a JDM legend skyline/Supra. Or a cobra Stang, evo's they're previous life is everything. They're either really really good or really bad. A raptor is alot less likely to be abused but if it was it could be very bad towards repairs.
@@benwilliams9172 I purchased my 2013 raptor roush a couple of years ago and it's been nothing but fun . If possible try to purchase a one owner truck . And try to go for an unmolested one as well
Absolutely love the sound of that V8! Just proves to me that “Progress” is not always a good thing, these fancy new turbocharged V6’s have power, but they lack soul. I am sure Ford has their own definition of TFL now, “Tough F’n Luck” if you want a V8, here is a roid raging squirrel in a spinning wheel.
Haven't driven the new one then, huh? very few miss the V8 after driving the gen2. my stock 2017 is faster than my friends supercharged Gen 1 on and off road (I have videos to prove it).
@@T4nkcommander Then there's something wrong with your buddy's truck. Stock the new ones only make 30 whp more than the old ones. And with a Whipple the old ones make 120-150 whp more than the new ones with a tune. It's not even close.
@@NYCnMiami Torque is much more important in these trucks. 510 to 450.... In addition, you forget power to weight ratio. Gen 2 is aluminum. I'm 700lb lighter without accounting for the dual spares he runs.
blucollardad we have a 2019 Bullitt, the 5.0 in it sounds amazing and has waaaayy more than enough umph to get you into trouble quick! Love that 5.0. Turbochargers are for diesels and airplanes!
I think they should make a small ecpboost v8 for the raptor, maybe 3.8-4.0 liters. It would sound much better, more power, and wouldn't be under boost as much, which would help fuel economy because turbo engines have to run rich under boost to avoid pre-detonation. A small v8 would be nice. Keep the 2.7 as a base, offer a twin turbo v8 as an option.
With the new Ram Rebel TRX coming, Ford may need to get ready to pull the supercharged 5.2L cross plane crank V8 from the Mustang GT500, in to the Raptor.
@@swamprobin3291 Which would make it worse, because a lighter front end with more torque is much better. The TRX is going to be anemic offroad and cost over $100k. It will pull on the road I suppose tho.
@kevin, you are right. He is also a millionaire so he isn't spending as much of his income on a car like this one. For normal people he would definitely advise against this type of purchase.
People say this, but that doesn’t make it true. My friend’s 2016 5.0 with 35k consumes more oil than my 2016 2.7 with 37k. The V-8s with cylinder deactivation are complicated and not reliable at all. I would never buy a GM or RAM V-8 with those systems. The turbos are proven technology and less complicated. So, I like the way Ford is building trucks. The coyote is definitely the best of the V8s right now, but I like my eco boost better than any V8 I’ve owned.
Absolutely not true lol the eco boost v6 is built unfucking real strong the 6.2 is relatively weak with a tight ring gap so if boost is ever added it pops quick. It’s amazing how uneducated your comment was.
It's hilarious how people think the EcoBoost have more moving parts and will be less reliable. Turbochargers have one moving part, so once you take away two Pistons their valves and other components I'm pretty sure you'll end up with less moving parts🤔
@@billdauterive246 a framing hammer has proven itself to be very reliable over the years, but for some reason the roofers across the street are using cordless air nailers. Man are they going to regret that purchase 🤣
Scott Cravens Not true. The 6.2 V8 is a stronger package than the EcoBoost. You are comparing a light duty passenger vehicle engine to a 3/4 ton duty truck engine here. 6.2 is a big bore cast iron block with cross bolted mains in a naturally aspirated setup. The EcoBoost or any half ton motor for that matter isn’t running with the 6.2 on longevity. The 6.2s are overbuilt for their purpose and Ford built them to work hard.
Man what a hard decision to make but I can respect the reasons behind it. It’s funny though, it’s like he is saying I traded my 2019 in to get this beater to go mudding. 🤣
@@actontreadway1168 for a trail rig? Jeep Wrangler TJ. Older tacoma. Older land cruiser. I’ve got a 3rd gen tacoma TRD off road. It gets the job done, but I’d say that width is as wide as you want for our trails. Raptor is too wide for most trails.
Love everything about the new raptor but the exhaust sound :( kudos to ford though for being way out in front of the game 10 years ago. Here we are in 2020 and still no real competition from ram and GM
Yeah, cant stand the exhaust sound. Sounds like an old Toyota Tacoma with the 3.4. Love the Tacoma's but was never a fan of how they sound with an aftermarket exhaust. I cant get past the exhaust note on the raptor. I know you can change exhaust but that will only make it louder. Everytime I see one I think to myself that is a bad ass looking truck, then the guy takes off and I'm so disappointed in the exhaust note. Love the volume, just hate the note.
rochab77 totally agree with you. Baddest truck on market but man the exhaust note is cringe worthy. And this is not me hating on the Engine as it’s powerful and torquey
@behexen250 LOL I got three friends with over 100k, (and at least 20% hard offroad miles) without any issues. well, the guy that tuned his to the limit blew the engine. but the stock trucks have no problems.
@@Jackmerius_Tacktheretrix agreed. Glad I'm back in a V8 again, a V6 will never sound like a V8, even if it makes more power. I've heard some V10's and V12's that have V8 type exhaust sound though
The most amazing this about this is that Gen 1 costing 30K with only 70k miles on it. Balderdash! Every gen 1 I’ve seen for that price has at least 120k miles on it lmao
I had a twin turbo EcoBoost Expedition for about a month. A absolutly hated it. When you smash the gas, there would be a 1 to 2 secong period 9of downshifting and building boost. The midrange power would come in super strong and was actually impressive. Then if would fall flat on it's face in the upper RPM range. It also started to smoke at idle while I had it, presumably from premature turbo seal leakage. This was a low milage truck too.
Yeah I added this NOS sticker in the back, supposed to give me extra 25 hp, and then see this tint, its custom they had to fit it, oh and I also added tire gloss. You can't have a Raptor without some custom tire gloss...
I have a 2019 White Raptor , before owned a 2006 Siverado, The raptor new Gen is something special just out of this world , my friend had a older v8 Raptor we raced not even close that eco boost v6 twin turbo is a beast.
@@firebry23 Yeah. He kept saying it was a financial decision. I think he wants to mod the truck a lot. And doing so to the new truck would actually cause it to LOOSE value. Which is true. The older one makes more sense to do major mods and not worry about a $70k truck.
I love my 3.5 EB Platinum F-150 I love V8 sound and these don't sound good. So it will be the first one I don't make loud. Lol I might remove the cats tho.
kyle g why is it everyone thinks a v6 won’t make power?? The Ford got is 647 hp with 80 percent the same engine as an F150 ecoboost. That’s just old school thinking man. Europeans been doing in for years. I’m buying a gen2 raptor for fuel economy said no one ever.
@R J Why the gas powered light duty trucks for hotshot fleet? Also Sounds like the stretching timing chain and/or cam phasers is an all too common problem and its no simple repair. Ive done it on my 2013 ecoboost because it had the stretched chain rattle.
@R J Gocha. Hearing the word Hotshot, a dually with a long flatbed or car hauler comes to mind as opposed to last mile haul or express delivery...I've been looking at the newer ecoboosts with the 10speed lately, mainly for the efficiency aspect of light duty trucks
Been liking the at home editions but I missed you guys actually interviewing people, goes more in depth and it’s fun with you guys picking people brain
Love my Gen 1 raptor. Great to see the comparison. BTW, the spare tire on the gen1 is lose. Could see it when doing the exhaust comparison. Might want to tighten that up. (mine come lose from time to time)
Very comprehensive overview of the process on both trucks. The only thing I’m curious to know from the owner is are there any plans to address the front end difference? Speaking strictly aesthetically the Gen 2 front looks so much better than the Gen 1.
I traded in my 14 Raptor for a 2017 F-150 supercharged Roush. I liked the Raptor but it had its flaws... 1. It made alot of noise but was kinda slow. 2. The shocks are no good in cold weather and shit the bed even though the truck never seen dirt and cost a small fortune to replace. 3. Alot of wind noise inside the cab going down the highway. 4. It had the famous Raptor whine during start-up in cold weather (steering pump issue) that should have been a re-call along with the fuse #27 issue. Not too sure why Ford never addressed these two issues?!
The new Raptor looks and IS vastly better and lighter than the old one, but because Ford in their stupidity decided to use an Ecoboost instead of a good tuned, supercharged Coyote like it deserved, I can't blame this guy at all.
I had both not everyone can afford a high payment good excuse I like old more I have new v6 tuned to 580 on wheels and 643 torque I hope this guy doesn’t run into me I’ll make him wish he kept his v6. Also looks way nicer and never broke down ever with 32k miles on the odo as of today I have 2017
Every time I see a new Raptor I think it looks cool - but then I hear the V6 and it’s a total let down. Sounds like a Toyota Camry. I don’t care how fast it is a V6 is the wrong engine for a truck. Put a Coyote in there.
R J I’ve driven 2 of them. One a 2015 f-150 and a 2018 raptor. I don’t like them, noise isn’t there, honestly the performance is overrated, and I don’t trust twin turbos on a V6 platform. And I also don’t like how there transmissions are tuned to shift, hunt too much. No one I know has had good luck with ford, including me. I bought a 2016 Ford Explorer limited 3.5, absolute pile. Thank god it was under warranty because the recalls and time in the shop amounted to more than I drove it. Never again will I buy another ford product. Not because I hate them for no reason, but I don’t trust them anymore.
Baron Volkov oh absolutely, the 6.2 is one of my favorite ford engines. Almost the perfect V8, plentiful power and torque, smooth and most importantly they’re dead reliable. I take back what I said, I would purchase a 2011-2014 F-250. They pull good and sound good. Ford definitely did something right with that one. I just do not wanna touch any of their ecoboost V6’s at all. Had too much trouble and heard a lot of horror stories. How do you like that raptor? I’ve thought of getting me one down the road.
Gen 2 looks far better in my opinion. More "robust" looking. And I can appreciate that the V6 makes as much power ad it does. And with some exhaust mods you can make it sound mean. But you just can't beat the V8.
Andre, I could tell you really wanted to shake his hand. I’m right there with you. It feels so weird and unnatural not to shake someone’s hand. But someday soon! Great video; love your enthusiasm you have for all things truck! Keep up the good work!
Could't agree more with this decision! I've got a 2012 Raptor and put 145k miles on it thus far, driving all over the USA. Nothing like the sound of that V8! Once this baby hits 250k miles on the odometer I only see two acceptable options as upgrades/replacements: MegaRaptor or BA350!!
Yeah, once you've enjoyed a good V8 exhaust note, you can't go back (or if you do, like I had to at one point, you'll be back to a V8 when you can, like I am once again)
I agree it’s more financially responsible to upgrade the Gen 1 .. unless you aren’t concerned about money.. but the Gen 2 cost so much more and is stock... if you take a Gen one..you can buy a nice one for $30k. which is half the price, nay 1/3rd the price.... now you can do anything you want to the Gen 1 for the remaining $30k. You can supercharge you can get all the bumper chase racks lighting and suspension upgrades done and still be under or about $60k and at that point... it’s not a contest as to which is a better truck.
I bought a used 2014 Raptor it was a badass truck but little did I realize it had some much wrong with it in the first three days of owning it. Engine, transmission, gauges, it goes on. I was lucky to return it after they messed up the paperwork (wrong vin). Bottom line they say the Gen 1 are reliable and I don’t doubt they are if they’re maintained and taken care of. But everyone that owns drives them usually drives them hard. If you’re considering getting one get it looked over throughly. But personally I’d Stay away from a used one. New is the way to go on a Raptor
I had a 13 raptor with dirty deeds exhaust and it was amazing. I'm in a superduty now with some game changer mods and wish I could have both. Both amazing trucks
Gen 1 is a lawn dart on jumps. And it’s heavy so don’t get it stuck. Speaking from personal experience. I’d stick with the gen 2 for off-road performance but the gen 1 for a mall cruiser....
I have and have to have the v8. There's nothing else that compares. I Like how the new Raptors look. But I would never owned a Eco boost. Only v8 for me. They sound so good.
Logic. To be fair, only the 2010 and 2011 models had the regular f150 frames. It got reinforced in 2012, so he should be good. He also said Raptor Assault was impressive, so 'fast' is 30-40mph to him.
I'm concerned that they are still having VVT (cam phaser) problems. The v-6 is starting to show signs of problems. I was a long time Ford customer who had catastrophic failure of the 5.4 liter 3-valve. Eating a $7,000 repair was not good, plus dealing with a Ford lawyer and customer service was not good.
I don’t own a Raptor but I do own 2011 Lariat Limited that has the same engine as the 1st gen Raptors. I like to tell people that my Raptor is wearing a tuxedo! You know, there are certain cars/trucks that just should not be messed with and Ford did this to these 2 icons by getting rid of the V8 in favor of V6s and these 2 vehicles I am speaking of are the GT(40) and the Raptor…now, I know there are others but these 2 jumped right to the forefront. If the same engineering went into the V8s as Ford did with the V6s then I feel Ford would have kept the V8.
I still say that the gen 1 is the best looking and it was the most groundbreaking. Plus it's a 6.2 V8 and ot can still hold its own off road. Plus he said no push to start like its a negative??? Having a key insert is better!!!
Basically he lost a $1,000 a month on depreciation. Add that to his I guess $800 a month payment pretty expensive monthly cost. But he loves his truck.
@John John whats the crying about "personal finances"? Its simple numbers, doesnt matter who's numbers they are, numbers dont lie. If a guy cant afford to throw a bunch of money at modding a 70k truck and decides to downgrade and mod an older one, great thats his choice, but its damn obvious that such choice was made with personal finances in consideration. I'll take it a step further and would argue that if you cant buy a car/truck outright, you have no business buying it. Financing vehicles is a link in the slave chain which keeps the middle class poor in America.
