I want to thank you Emmie for inspiring me to read. I’ve been learning English by myself by reading English books and watching TV series and movies. I’ve been yearning to read many English books for a long time but I’ve been not kinda a book person really (ironically) so I’m stuck in a way. But after finding you on RU-vid guided by algorithms I read more than I used to. Watching your video, I am so happy adding books that you recommend into my tbr list. So I want to thank you Emmie for your hard work on your channel and everything. I hope someday I can understand all what you’re saying in video.🧡🧡🧡
Listen to the girl and grab a cat to watch the video! 😅🐈 00:57 - The Girl From the Other Side 03:18 - Wide Sargasso Sea 07:23 - The Silence of Bones 10:19 - How Much Land Does A Man Need? + What Men Live By 12:19 - The Legend of the Sleepers 14:49 - The Hacienda 18:38 - The Monk 21:09 - Among the Beast and Briars 22:48 - The Blue Fox 23:49 - Mary’s Monster 25:12 - Gothikana
jean rhys is one of my favourite writers! i encountered her in my english degree and she was one of the first authors that made me realise that studying literature truly is what i love to do. wide sargasso sea was also the first novel of hers that i read. i recommend checking out good morning, midnight!! it’s so wonderful, full of isolating thoughts and lonely life in the harsh city (which is one of my favourite tropes and i think you would maybe like it because of your own struggles with living in a big city). this is a long and rambly comment but i could talk about jean rhys forever, i hope you enjoy her other work as much as i do :)
nooooo, the girl from the other side is really good! i loved it so much! i read like 4 or 5 volumes in October... and yeah, it gets better and you're gonna see more... i don't know, maybe you should try one or two more volumes
It never fails--I start to make progress on my TBR list and boom, Emma with a new video and lengthens it all out again! Hurts so good! Have a great week, Emma!
Oh my God. Danilo Kis is Serbian (Yugoslav) author. I loved him in school, when we read The encyclopedia of the Dead! Highly recommend! I was stunned when you mention him, because I'm not used to seeing Serbian authors read and translated that much!! 😁😁
It's so great to see you glow about a book you've loved, and getting the scoop on the ones that failed you is excellent, too. My BOS list, (Buy On Sight), is expanding.
Your vids just get lovelier and lovelier over time, I can't get over how lucky I am to have found your channel. I hope you never stop doing what you love ❤️❤️
Reading the comments I’m glad I wasn’t the only one to notice today Emma looks exceptionally gorgeous, she looks amazing always but there’s that little extra today that I couldn’t help to notice and comment. That being said, I’m putting some of those books on my TBR, hopefully I’ll get around them soon.❤
I am Muslim and I didn't know there were stories like this about the people of Kahaf (Kahaf means ***cave*** in Arabic). There is a whole Surah (I think it's called chapter in English) named Kahaf. There were a small group of men (and 1 dog) who wanted to practice their religion but couldn't because of the ruler of that time so they were put to sleep. This is what I remember. I am curious to read what other cultures and religions have to say about the Kahaf ppl
@@ha_limabeanz I knew there were a lot of parallels in terms of events and stories but this was the first time I heard Kahaf ppl mentioned anywhere other than Quran
I am Serbian and, my god, you pronounced Danilo Kiš perfectly! It's definitely one of his lesser known works. I think The encyclopedia of the dead could be the most popular, with a far better goodreads rating.
I'm so glad you had a good month! I finally read Phantom of the Opera because of you, loved it! Also read Dracula that was fun. I bought Mary's Monster the other day remembering you were reading it, but I haven't read Frankenstein yet and realized I don't have a copy of Frankenstein! Thanks for the update, I love all of your videos ❤
The only thing I didn't like about Mary Shelley's Frankenstein is that at times it demands full concentration, and living in the city sometimes it's difficult find a quiet time and space to give it what it deserves. Of course, you can still read it casually for great enjoyment but the full effect comes thru best in dedicated two-hour, distraction-free sessions.
You should read "Early Sorrows" by Danilo Kiš! It's a mandatory read for kids in Serbia but many people like it nonetheless. I'm sad that the true tone of Serbian or any other Balkan language is usually lost in translation but I highly recommend our books!! 🥺
I was very surprised when you pulled out Danilo Kiš! He's a really big Serbian/Yugoslav author, a classic one even (very highly regarded and is part of the school curriculum in the region). I would definitely suggest that you pick up some of his other work, like the Family Cycle trilogy (the only work of his that I personally read so far), or maybe one of his novels. All in all, he's someone worth giving a second chance to, plus an author that could work for you Around the World challenge 😊
Emma I DESPERATELY need a video about your 5 star reads!! I’ve been watching your videos for a while and I think I know of only 2 books that you rated 5 stars (Phantom of Opera & 1000 years solitude)?! ✨⭐️💫
Always a pleasure to watch your videos ❤️ I really want to try the monk for next year’s spooky season ! I also bought the bloody chambers when you recommended it last year but didn’t end up having time to read it this October. My favorite reads of the month were Frankenstein and 24h in the life of a woman by Zweig !
With Danilo Kiš, I would like to provide some more Balkan works! Croatia (Dark Mother Earth by Kristian Novak) and BIH (Catch the Rabbit by Lana Bastašić and Death and the Dervish by Meša Selimović).
I've loved that song for more than 50 years. It occurred to me one day - idk , like 20 years ago, or so - it is or could be interpreted as an anti-war song (which were popular during the 1960s).
I've been so excited to read The Silence of Bones for so long (I think it's been a year since I first saw it on booktok) but after listening to your thoughts on it, I don't know if I should actually buy it and spend my time reading it. I'll have to think about it 🤣🤣 btw, I loved the outfit, you were so cute💖💖
Dear Emmie, there is also a play by Egyptian author Tawfiq Al-Hakim called 'Ahl Al Kahf' translated in english as 'The People of the Cave', that is also a great reinterpretation of the Biblical/Quran story (it's a very famous piece of literature in the arab world), and I highly recommend you to read it !
Just wanna show off the fact that when I subscribed Emma was only at about 1 or 2k subscribers…now look at her haha. I’m amazed by how her channel has grown since then
Yes, it's pretty amazing. I subscribed after that, tho I've been watching consistently since early '20 or late '19, and yes it's incredible how it's zoomed up there into one of the most popular.
I wouldn't really recommend you to continue on with The Girl From The Other Side if you didn't like volume 1 that much. The art style is the same onwards and the story gets a little bit spicier but if you didn't like volume 1 that much I don't think you'd enjoy the next volumes that much either. Though I have only read up to half of volume 5 so take my advice with a grain of salt.
I picked up The Girl from the Other Side because of your bookshelf tour awhile back. I loved it! I think you should continue on, but there are some loose connections as the series goes on. I feel it wasn't properly explained on why Shiva was on the outside. It's definitely an up for interpretation type of manga, but the eleven volumes were worth it, and so short.
Thanks for sharing Emma!! I’ve been reading The Miracles of the Namiya General Store by Keigo Higashino and I think it’s one of the coziest, heartwarming/heartbreaking books I’ve read in a while!
Also, I haven't been able to read much this month and I don't think I'll be able to until maybe next year because of school commitments and it's making me so sad 😢. I'm glad you found good reads this month, and maybe a little jealous!
I finally read The Haunting of Hill House after watching the TV show four years ago. It was so quietly creepy and subdued and I was really pleasantly surprised at how pared back it was. Definitely my favourite spooky read of this year 🎃
So I haven't read The Silence of Bones, so I'm not sure how the two books would compare to each other (i.e. if Hur has had any significant growth as a writer), but I have read The Red Palace, which is her newest book that came out at the beginning of this year, and I really enjoyed it! I would say give it a try, because I didn't notice any of the same issues that mentioned for The Silence of Bones. I was sad that both of us had the same experience with Among the Beasts and Briars. Just didn't do it for me either. Also, Calcifer is an absolute king. Love him
Another lovely video Emmie! Thank you so much for always consistently posting! As I am currently in a reading slump your video has successfully given me motivation to get back into reading thank you so much
I just love your books Emmie! I don't know any but I love it, Mexican gothic makes me think of breaking bad, and is like American southern gothic, especially more contemporary like Tom Franklin, oouhg😓
that's how I felt about the hacienda. the writing was gorgeous, but the plot was just meh. it's like... she moves to this house, spooky stuff happens immediately, and she immediately believes it's supernatural (despite not believing in the supernatural before) and calls a priest and then... they spend the rest of the time trying to deal with it. but nothing ever ramps up, it basically just stays the same. I also wanted stronger anti-colonialism vibes, and maybe that's unfair of me because I shouldn't expect a PoC author to make a grand social statement. but I feel like the book was introduced to me as "gothic but anti-colonial," and I don't know if that came from the publisher or that's just what people were saying it was.
I finished the entire manga series for the Girl From the Other Side and I found it good. I don't think it was mindblowing or that it ever really portrayed that the stakes were high. But as the story progresses it does get interesting, and some reveals left my jaw on the floor. Overall, I think that if you want something to pass the time and that contains good art, then you should continue it. I would say just don't expect a lot because it's not a groundbreaking story, it's just okay.
It's so interesting you didn't like The Silence of Bones, because I really liked it. Admittedly, took me a bit to get into but I thought the stilted, sparse language reflected the society and mentality back then. (Obviously I am only guessing as a non-Korean but I thought the style was quite fitting.)
read a few horror books this october and a dowry of blood was a clear favourite. really enjoyed that book, it was very beautiful. thank you for the recommendation
I was at a charity shop today and saw wide sargasso sea in one of the shelves and....it was the quickest pick ever 😂 i cant wait to read it and thank you emma for always rekindling my drive to read
This month I mainly read a Collection of Edgar Allen Poe short stories. Overall I really enjoyed it, though I certainly liked some stories more than others. My favs were The Fall of The House of Usher (so gorgeously written) and The Pit and the Pendulum, as well as The Curious Case of M. Valdemar.
wide sargasso sea is a mandatory reading in one of my uni's second year modules (which i should've taken last year but didn't because i refused to take 12 modules in a semester) so hopefully infebruary 2023 i'll be studying it! and i neeeed to read the monk! it sounds so dark and fun
ever since I switched from science to Literature, I have stopped reading the books out of my syllabus and I miss that so much. But the hefty amount of works that I have to cover in just one semester keeps me from dwelling outside. Even in the course, I often don't read the actual text and go to shortcuts, as it's not as strict where I live. I don't know how I came here. I used to read even while eating and now... something is lost.
my favourite book i read in october was the house with the golden door by Elodie Harper. it's part two to a series about slaves in Pompeii, and i really enjoyed it. i didn't read a whole lot this month bc of uni :( i also just started babel by rf kuang, really good so far (im only a quarter through). it's a fantasy/dark academia book, im reading it for a fantasy bookclub!
Hi Emmie ! I would like to recommend u an Algerian book by Yasmina khadra "what the day owes the night" , it's a really famous book and I think u would like it .
love your review of the monk, such a great book, maybe a fave on my future reread. i choose not to talk about it much outside classics centric communities since i have a hunch a lot of people would face value consider it "problematic" lol
I read the monk in 9th grade, stumbling upon it on accident. I know that there were layers to that book- but they were beyond me. I cant wait to reread it in like 10 years so I can actually understand.
hey, it's me 🥰 AGAIN haha 😇 I am writing just to remind you that you are beautiful and I send you all the love and all the energy. I watch every video of yours. for real.
Emma 😅 I've spent like 5 good minutes trying to figure out what's making you glow 😅. I'm going to need to watch this video again, this time focusing on what you're saying, instead of how you look, which is amazing.
nice map for thumb-tacking your reading around the world journey - by the way - can you explain to me how there can be a Sea (a wide one at that) in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean?
It's too be bad Hacienda didn't work out for you. I've wanted to read Mexican literature for a while and it sucks that neither Mexican Gothic or Hacienda panned out. Speaking of which, did you get around to reading Pedro Paramo? I mean was it any good?
