In this video we will talk about how to make the correct measurement of the water flow for our irrigation system.
I'm Federico from www.tuttoirrigazione.it/ and I want to explain to you how to make the correct measurement of the flow rate for your irrigation system in a simple way.
One of the simplest systems we recommend is to use easily found items such as a 5, 10, 15 liter graduated bucket, a stopwatch or timer and a pressure gauge.
Find a simple kit already made at this link if you need it www.my4garden.com/it/kit-misi...
Then you will have to connect everything together with a valve (if you do not have the measurement kit)
With this kit you can make the measurement to establish the correct flow rate for our irrigation system project.
This flow rate is dynamic and not static and in simple words we simulate the operation of our system at a certain pressure.
How to proceed ?
You take the kit, connect it to the point closest to the water source, to make the reading as realistic as possible, avoiding unnecessary pressure drops.
Once our kit is connected, we will open the main tap completely, waiting for the passage of water to be regularized (usually 30 seconds) and we will notice that when open all the pressure on the pressure gauge will be "0".
Once these 30 seconds have passed I will begin to close the tap of our kit and we will notice the increase in pressure bringing it to the pressure of use.
If we work with an irrigation system
- with aqueduct (except in special cases) the test pressure will be around between 2 and 2.5
- when we start to have a 1 to 1.5 (HP) horsepower pump, if I have static sprinklers or ½ "mini turbines we will detect from 2.5 to 3 bar while if the area requires the use of dynamic sprinklers larger ¾ “type we should go up with the pressure even reaching 4 bar.
I will have to repeat these tests at different pressures to have a general view of my water source so it would be good to do the readings at 2; 2.5; 3 and 4 bar if it arrives (in the case of a pump) and I will use the data with the best flow rate / pressure ratio.
Returning to our first example of aqueduct we will bring the pressure gauge to 2 bar by slowly closing our tap, we will wait a few moments to ensure that the water outlet flow stabilizes and, once stabilized, with the stopwatch and the bucket we will the measurement.
How ?
We will take our bucket, we will put them under the tap and at the same time we will also start our chronometer until it is completely filled.
Once we have filled 10 liters (example) we will stop the measurement, check the time and do the math.
In design, liters per minute are normally used so if to fill 10 liters it takes 30 seconds and one minute is 60 seconds it will only be necessary to do 30 seconds x 2 = 60 seconds which will be 1 minute
Having 10 liters in 30 seconds it will be enough to do x 2 = 20 liters in 60 seconds and then in 1 minute
This information is fundamental and will be used to make a correct design of the irrigation system.

Starting correctly with these data is a professional attitude, you do not risk finding strange surprises at the end of everything that the fault will not be of the materials but yours that you did not start on the right foot right away.
With a small investment you can get off to a good start and if you have other questions don't hesitate to write them here in the comments.
