@@MoorfieldFarmFlowers yes indeed, I just sprayed yesterday, spider mites are back. And I saw a Japanese beetle already.

Ah, thank goodness we don't have Japanese beetle in the UK (yet).

My dahlias got a late start because we moved from Texas to South Carolina in November. Most have reached an inch high and are living their best lives outside in my home garden.

Hi Katheryn, thanks for your comment. I'm always surprised how late starters seem to catch up, so long as its not too late for them. Good luck with yours.

Darn, I counted the bottom leaves, so I cut above the 2nd true leaves😢. I love your videos just wish I had seen this before my mistake! Thanks again!

Hi from Germany. My dahlias were not started early but have the same size like yours and no budy yet. . They grew and overwintered in buckets and were just watered and taken outside after the last frost.

Hi Kati, great to hear from you. Yes each variety behaves in a predictable way, and trying to adjust it is not guaranteed to make much difference, but I try! I hope yours do well this season.

My HS Wink is in bud and coping well in a pot on a sunny terrace in this scorching heat (32C) the last two days. But I've found a few of my other varieties seem to be struggling, some of the leaf edges crisping up (eg. Labyrinth). I thought dahlias were sun lovers.
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers

Hi Laurel, Yes the conditions really have been so extreme for early Summer, your leaves sound like they have been simply fried by the relentless sun. Keeping them watered and shaded up during the middle of the day should help. I hope they turn out well in the end.

Today (11/06) I have measured some flower buds. The greatest flower buds are: Sheval Megan => 20 millimetres Sweet Suzanne 25 millimetres For the moment it is here very dry and hot. (+ 30° Celcius and no rain for several weeks) Greetings from Belgium.

Hi Roland and greetings back to Belgium. Thanks for this, they are doing well ! And I hope they go on to give a great display. Keep up the good work!

Hi mine are a little smaller than yours, some i started in the cold frame and some indoors, plants from last year I left in the ground as I usually do, seemed to have lost a few of them though.

Hi thanks so much for your comment. Yes leaving them in the ground is fine if you are prepared to loose some. It's an adventure! I hope they go on to do well for you.

Grew mine in greenhouse then planted first week of May. Some were rather tall from greenhouse so when planted they have struggled. Have tomatoe cages around most of them. My bottom leaves are ugly but I see new growth from top. Weather has been everything! Have been watering also having a hard time getting that just right with the weather changes. All without rain. Heat then cool. Think this week I'll shade them suppose to be in 90-94° range I thought they likes direct sun so I put this raised bed out in full sun. Seems too hard on them. The ones I planted by the fence roo have partial shade of other plants & trees look wonderful. Rather disappointing in raised beds. Several sprouted & that's all folks! They are sure fussy plants but I love them.

Hi Melinda, thanks for your detailed comment. It sounds like you have things nicely under control. Raised beds are great for drainage but the cost might be having to water them even more at times like this. Good luck with yours - let us know how they turn out.

My dahlias were hit with marble size hail. I hope they come out of it
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers Год назад
Hi Gloria, oh dear not many plants are going to come through that unscathed, but you should be able to see the physical damage, give them a tidy up and allow the new shoots to get on and catch up. Good luck!

My tubers has eyes and I put them in the ground and the eyes turned black, do you think they will still sprout? The tubers are still firm and plump
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers Год назад
Hello AC. It's difficult to tell without further information - if the shoots appeared (usually red or green), and then turned black, then I fear they have desiccated and you will not grow, although other shoots may yet appear and save the day. I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

I unknowingly planted mine too close together in a container, theyre now pinching out size, is it too late to move them? Or should i just enjoy the possible show?
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers Год назад
Hi Coops, I cant advise fully without more details, but I will presume your dahlias are a full size variety and have a fair bit of above ground growth, say 2ft (60cm) or so. They will certainly be knocked badly by uprooting now, but there is a chance they will recover and flower for you eventually. I would advise reducing the number of leaves to reduce transpiration. and water them well. Another alternative is to remove some of the plants to allow the remaining plants to have the space they need. I think leaving them all in a container which is too small is likely to be the worst option - it's likely to become an unsightly mess. Good luck with them!

i received mine late.. due to cold weather and the company could not ship... i got mine April 18 :-( anyway got one kind that is very affected buy aphids..this is not a normal problem for me on dahlia... lady bugs are just starting..i still think to spray with neem oil... i dont like it but eh
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers Год назад
Hi Annie, the warm weather has got the aphids going so early in the season. I've not had much success with Neem oil but I hope you do. I have a small pump action water sprayer and that combined with an eagle eye and squishing seems to keep them largely under control. And oh yes, the Ladybirds (ladybugs) are already out in force too. Good luck with yours Annie.

Mine look so bad after looking at yours! They are tall, skinny and leaf are drying!
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers
@MoorfieldFarmFlowers 3 месяца назад
Hi Mary, sorry to hear yours are not doing so well. I would need more information to be sure, but tall and skinny is usually due to not enough light in the early growth phase. Drying leaves is usually a water issue - if the pot is too small for example, the compost will dry out very quickly. If you want to post more details I can be more specific.
@MaryseRacine7640
@MaryseRacine7640 3 месяца назад
@@MoorfieldFarmFlowers thank you for your response. Not enough light make sense. I bought led lights and my tomatoes and celery are starting to look good now. The pot is big enough I think, 10x10x10 inches. It is the same one they were in when I bought them last year. And I clean it last fall. I’m new to this as I retired early and need to keep busy. I always want a vegetables and flowers garden but never had enough time. Perennials are easy but I have a lot to learn. Like to pinch my Dalhia. Well, I hope I don’t kill them and will do a better job next year. Now that I know they grow so fast, I will start them under light begging of April instead of March. Oh and my leaves are also curly… well thank a lot, I was not expecting an answer but I really really appreciate it. And I live in Quebec, Canada so I kept the tubes in vermiculite last winter.

@@MoorfieldFarmFlowers just to let you know, I plant my dahlias outside on May 15th and my god it looks like they love the outside more than the inside! They are looking good by the day! The pinching is helping a lot. The leafs are not curling anymore, they look healthy (that is my impression since they look so much better). Now, I cannot wait to see the flowers blooming and appreciated them with my grand kids. Your videos were big help! I will continue to watch them! Thank and have a nice summer!
