We figured out that armadillos dig out dirt with their front paws and shove it behind them, so they are just used to pulling stuff toward them and thus the end up pulling the bowl away.

those dastardly dillos guess they didn't preserve any clops of them dragging the bowl off screen every night. that was always fun to watch where the bowl would end up. like gary before they staked him down. it was more fun as a viewer when they animals messed with the setup, seeing how everything looked upon waking up the next morning, though i'm sure it was tedious for the CV crew to manage. i hope some day the raccoons learn to lift gary, he's not _that_ securly rooted in the slab. they've almost lifted him a few times, never enough to notice and clear the stakes though.
@CritterVision
@CritterVision 5 месяцев назад
LOL, which is why we used to have the trays at the old place attached to rods that went deep into the ground because raccoons would see a tray of food and think "perfect! I'll just take the whole tray with me!". We'd have to go looking around in the forest for the trays, some of which we never did find!!

Ellis when the peanut butter dish was not inside the hula hoop it was fun in the beginning to see the armadillos move it all around. However it denied the viewers from seeing the rest of the critters enjoying the peanut butter.

Female armadillos certainly can and do! Interesting fact about armadillo pregnancy is that it averages 150 gestational days and they always give birth to identical quadruplets! Yes you read that right...identical quadruplets! Baby armadillos are called "pups" and they have a soft leathery shell that doesn't harden until they reach full adulthood!

It's lovely to watch... but in the long run such abundant feeding stations aren't good for the critters: instead of eating their natural, wild foods, they end up filling up on feed/seeds/etc. which is very limited nutritionally. It's great to support them during winter, but in the summer they need to eat their wild stuff to stay healthy. For example, rom volunteering with small mammals rehab, I learned about the importance of calcium to phos ratio for strong bones and teeth in rodents. Peanuts, sunflower seeds, corn, other seeds etc. are too high in phosph and when consumed regularly will deplete/disrupt calcium absorption which will lead to the Metabolic Bone Disease (very painful, debilitating, even fatal if not treated, can permanently disable/compromise an animal). When they fill up on their natural food in the spring/summer/fall, the few months of winter feeder support is fine. But if they eat it all year round, it's not good.
@CritterVision
@CritterVision 4 месяца назад
MBD is not common for opossums who still reside in the wild. It's quite the opposite though for those that are held in captivity, especially by folks who have no background in healthcare, rehabilitation of wildlife, etc. These critters are free to come and go at their choosing and will. They eat what they need for nutritional value and leave what they don't. Fortunately, critters are very good at determining their needs, unlike many humans who will eat fast food and junk foods until it darn near does them in!
@zzc8505
@zzc8505 4 месяца назад
@@CritterVision MBD has been found in wild young squirrels who fill up on peanuts and sunflower seeds at feeders. I've seen and helped with those poor babies myself. While these animals are free to come and go, anyone who knows at least something about wildlife, especially, about opportunistic feeders, knows that they do tend to get used to relying on feeders much heavier than is needed for their own good. Another example: wild fowl/other birds often end up with weakened wings/deformities after being fed bread and other stuff for prolonged periods of time (in parks etc. where people feed them). If a squirrel fills up on peanuts and sunflower seeds, it will automatically eat fewer insects, less greens, less of any other wild food. Animals, just like humans, can be very tempted by their own "junk" which includes peanuts, sunflower seeds, corn, and other common feeder stuff. They absolutely do not need any feeders in the summer: neither rodents, nor birds, nor marsupials, nor racoons, no any other species.
