According to Mike Coppinger. Canelo Alvarez has chosen to fight Edgar Berlanga next on September 14th in Las Vegas. This news comes as no surprise to boxing fans.
Rumors were swirling around the internet that Canelo would be fighting Berlanga in September. Shortly after Canelo beat Jaime Munguia. As expected, Canelo fans are excited.
They are saying things like... This is a tougher fight. Canelo can do what he wants to do. Mexico vs Puerto Rico sells. etc, etc, etc.
David Benavidez on the other hand has decided to stay at 175. Apparently, he got wind that Canelo would not be choosing him next... so he decided to stay at 175.
Canelo fans are excited about this news as well. And understandably so. They will say things like... David never wanted to the fight. David Benavidez ducked Canelo. Benavidez is too big for Canelo.
I get the narratives from both sides of the spectrum. But, the last part is what I don't get. Edgar Berlanga is 6' 1", with a 73 inch arm reach. Berlanga walks around at almost 200 lbs in between fights.
David Benavidez is 6' 2", with a 74 and a half inch arm reach. He walks around at almost 200 pounds in between fights. Berlanga and Benevidez are both 27 years old, and pretty much the same size.
So, if your argument is Benavidez is too big for Canelo, and this is why Canelo shouldn't fight him. Then why is Canelo fighting Berlanga? If your argument is Benavidez brings nothing to the table.
Then, what does Berlanga bring to the table? If your argument is Benavidez isn't a draw. Then, how big of a draw is Berlanga? Because last i checked... Berlanga is a lesser draw than Benavidez.
If your argument is Benavidez hasn't earned the right to fight Canelo. Then what did Berlanga do to earn the right to fight Canelo? The fact of the matter is this.
The Mexico vs Puerto Rico angle doesn't sell because it's not believable with the fans. Berlanga is not from the Island. He's from Brooklyn. Belrlannga is what you call a Nuyorican.
The term is also used by Islander Puerto Ricans (Puerto Ricans from Puerto Rico) to differentiate those of Puerto Rican descent from the Puerto Rico-born citizens.
The term Nuyorican is also sometimes used to refer to the Spanish spoken by New York Puerto Ricans.
Nuyoricans are not considered Puerto Ricans by some island Puerto Ricans. This is due to cultural differences, which remains a point of controversy among both groups of Puerto Ricans till this day.
So, the Mexico vs Puerto Rico rivalry is gonna be a hard sell for this fight. No one is surprised by this news. The question I have is this.
Here's the real reason why Berlanga was chosen over the mandatory challenger David Benavidez. Canelo feels Berlanga is too green to be a threat to beat him.
Meaning, he's the easier target. And I get it. So, instead of me playing these crackhead games. Lying to myself about why Canelo picked Berlanga. I have to tell the truth. I know it. You know it. We all know it.
