I maintain several jeep including one of my own, I change trans fluid every 40-50 K in them, just a partial change, they are older so just use the screen type 'Filter' , on mine I am just about to hit 400K on the original engine, trans and t-case build, it is about worn out at this point but I am still very impressed it made it this far and 24 years.

In 2020, I bought an '02 toyota camry that had 190k mi. for dirt cheap. It had sat under a tree for almost a year up to that point, and had been neglected by its previous owners. When I got it home, I flushed & changed all the fluids EXCEPT the transmission, replaced the belts, hoses, tires, plugs, coil packs, air filters, radiator, & valve cover gasket. I had a job as a courier at the time, so I would be driving the camry 100+mi./day mostly in stop & go traffic. For the next 3 days, I performed an ATF drain & fill as soon as I got home from work while the fluid was still hot. On the 3rd & final drain & fill, I dropping the pan and also replaced the transmission's filter. It has 244k mi. now, and it's driven like new since performing all those repairs back in 2020. The very first time I drained the old fluid out of the trans. after I bought it, it was a dark red color with a bit of brown, and a slight burnt smell. Thankfully, I changed it in time before it got any worse. I've done the occasional drain & fill every 20k mi., and the torque delivery from the A/T has been very good with minimal throttle input. No slippage or hesitation. I didn't find out until months after it had passed emissions testing that it actually had 2 cats, and the 1st cat (that's mounted directly onto the exhaust manifold) was completely rotted out inside. But it still passed. I replaced it b/c it kept throwing a code. But for the 9mos. that it was my delivery vehicle, it handled everything like a champ: no problems whatsoever. Even though I drive a lot less now, I still run a synthetic oil, & change the oil every 5k mi. Which is also incredibly easy to do myself. Easily one of the best cars I've ever owned: Excellent build quality, comfortable, cheap, great mileage, easy to repair, wide parts availability, and everything still works: All the climate control incl. the A/C, Cruise control, all the window motors, etc. I love that old car! The dividends it has paid back for all the minor repairs that it needed was well worth the work.

Girlfriend's Toyota Rav4 just turned 100,000 miles. We're doing a trip from upstate New York to Arizona next month (mid August). Went to our local garage for a transmission fluid change. They wouldn't do it. Did it myself. Toyota WS fluid is $60 for four quarts on Ebay. Runs fine.

NO manufacture asks you to flush the transmission. This topic is moot. Some of them ask you to change the fluid. Some even claim life time fluid, which is wrong, of course too.
