All the common rust areas on the Volvo 245 wagon and so much more! This one needs a serious restoration.
At the moment Involvo'd is funded by ad revenue, some very generous Patrons and a dishwashing job. If you want to support the channel (and get some perks, ie early access to videos, behind the scenes pictures etc you can find me on Patreon!

Interesting to note also, and I have owned many Volvo 240 wagons over the past 40+ years, also 740 and 760 wagons, the earlier 240's from early production to last, 1993, got better resisting rust towards end of production...generally. My brother was a Volvo tech in Maine many years before his death, learned a lot from him. The B230 would remain "bullet proof" even turbo'ed , throughout all production. The Asian-Warner 3 speeds with overdrive, also "bullet proof" !!! Of all the really old cars still in operation today, are Volvo 240's! In my opinion, the best automobiles ever made!

I have an 85 model same color but i think i can save mine.its got 350,000 mi. On it but still doesn't burn or leak oil.i have had to do all new bushings and shocks and the rocker panels have some rust issues.but for a car that has the kind of milage mine does im surprised it still runs and it's my daily driver.i replaced the timing belt and seals along with the wiper motor and fixed my overdrive switch along with the idle air control valve and the drier side window trac mechanism.so i realize there will most likely be more components i will have to deal with in the future but that's all part of owning a car this old.i love this car for the pure old school repairability that it has.as long as i continue standard maintenance i see no reason this car can't make a million miles.keep looking for a good one they are well worth it.i love your volvo videos and keep it up you make it easier to do my repairs.thanks.

As I said when you first inspected the car, could only be a parts car. , I thought you had walked away but you had to at least have a look at the price. I purchased a similar 1978 Mercedes 300D for $500. Just for the motor and transmission. In my wildest dreams I never thought of restoring. It. If you can move the Volvo on at a small profit, good on you. But it is the fun of the chase and capture. Whatever the outcome. Thank goodness we don’t see that level of rust in Australia with cars still drivable. Keep going , and enjoying your passion.

On the photos it looked much better actually. Also, the doors were really good and the right side of the car didn’t have that much rust. Left side rear was much much worse. And where the rear hatch is there was little rust (between the bumper and the trunk) to my opinion. Such a strange car in total…. Wise decision to let it go… Although the previous owner was emotionally so attached to it they let it bled to death.

Those rims or alloys would look nice on the 240 sedan, I think it is/was a special option then, I don*t know if that wagon has a rev. Counter, small clock that would make the sedan look nicer, also if that wagon has power windows mirrors, and the 240 sedan has manual it is very easy to convert to power windows , you only have to switch the components from the wagon to the sedan and vice versa it would make that 240 sedan something special, I know because I did it, eventhough I don*t have the1981 240 GL I went so far as to change the dash and changed the 1981 which was cracked beyond, and put a 1983 in perfect.conditions

The alloy wheels look like the best part of the car. My '91 240 GLE sedan has these rims. I prefer the Virgo alloy but these faux wire wheels look nice and are period correct. The engine can probably be saved, they are a known quantity. The rusty body is another matter. Cutting out rust and filing the gaps could be a never ending nightmare. The interior is bad also. Non standard seats, speakers on plywood blocks. Yikes. Take off what is useful and good, dispose the body, put the good bits on another 240. Stop looking down the oil filler hole, that's disgusting. Yeah, buy another 240 wagon in better condition and use the parts off the red one to bring it up to better condition. You're a brave man Gungha Din.

Devastating, absolutely heartbreaking :( Crazy though how the Volvos on youtube seem to be awful rust bombs, but in the northern countries where winter often means four months of incessant showers of briny slush for four months (except way, way up in the north) Volvos are considered almost impervious to rust. My 940 had it's first rust repair in 2019 (after 21 years on the road) when a small hole, about 10mm wide, was found on the underbody.

I just want the wipers lol. Not the TV screens. I have a tiny wiper fetish. 240 for life!

Man, that's some serious rot, especially when 240s are made of thick steel to start with. At least at 500 you've got a decent set of wheels and potentially some other spare parts and not broken the bank...

Crazy isn't it! That's the way I look at it too, those wheels have already transformed the other 240 I can't wait to show you guys

Unfortunately you can't save them all. This does make me love my 240 Torslanda more, as it has very little corrosion.

Exactly this, it makes me feel even luckier to have a mostly rust free 240, she has her problems, but nothing like this!

has that exhaust been straightpiped or is it just broken? it sounds like a wanna-be V8!
@Involvod

Haha they fitted some non Volvo exhaust, cobbled together. But it also has a really bad blow at the front somewhere

Sell it in parts, for restauration you need a better equipped workshop and "fixing" is not an option.

Is that wortth to fix a car with such rusty chassee? Holes in frames everywhere. We know you koves Volvos but still. And courius thing, how do they pass technucal check? You are mentioning it all the time.
@Involvod

Worth it is subjective 😄 If someone doesn't mind spending many weeks/months fabricating and welding they could sort this car out, you could never pay someone it would cost more than the car is worth... That's a great point, I think they must have had a good relationship with the tester!

@@Involvod , Yeah. Hahah, all clear. They were just manufactured as future cars in archaic box. All on all, they met many safety targets 'in advance' vs. our era. 🤓✌️

I wonder if anyone wrote a book or did a video series on how to rust proof and bullet proof Volvo 240s? Now something like that? I would GLADLY shell over $40 quid, lbs, Greenbacks, or Crypto bunnies for.
