I can relate. Currently driving a 2001 Yukon SLT as a daily driver. 360K miles on the original 5.3 and trans. Paint is finally going, as is the leather on the drivers seat. But next to my home, it's been the best purchase I've ever made.
@ne2i
@ne2i 5 месяцев назад
You can buy a new seat bottom cushion and cover.
@ktpinnacle
@ktpinnacle 5 месяцев назад
@@ne2i Of course. But seeing that I had it built in Arlington and picked it up there nearly 23 years ago, it's gone the distance. I've been saying that I'm getting something new for years now. Instead, I stare at my non-functioning cassette deck and CD player while the 5.3 just continues to get me to where I want to go.

Same here. I have a 2005 Yukon SLT that just hit 240k on the odometer driving across the country last week. I used to only do light maintenance on my cars, but the Yukon's so easy to work on that I've taken to doing 99% of repairs and upgrades myself. Like yours, my paint has seen better days but for a boat-hauler and camping truck I'm not too worried about it. I just replaced the driver seat cushion and leather earlier this month before the long drive (go for it if you're on the fence--took me an hour and paid immediate dividends on the 40 hours from PA to CA).
@ktpinnacle

@@aiolijones One thing - I wish the Yukon/Tahoes aren't as long as they are today. This size was perfect for me with growing kids and now as empty nesters. And it's so much easier to see around the vehicle than the current trucks (having driven K-Blazers and this Yukon since 1981, I still call them trucks), and I can parallel park it like a Mini.

I love the GMT-800s. My first new truck that I bought was a 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab. The seats starting in 2003-up for the 800s were the best seats that has ever been put in a vehicle. If GM announced today they were going back with that style for the 2025 model year I’d go order one today. Anyways nice video. They really should bring back the 2500 Suburban. I think there’s a market there for sure. And the current 6.6 L8T makes more power everywhere than that 8.1 496 big block. But it would be cool if GM gave a new true big block Chevy the LS/LT head treatment. It would be a game changer for gas engines. They offer one at Chevrolet performance for a crate engine so maybe one day.
@josephina24
@josephina24 5 месяцев назад
The 8.1 has more rotating mass, wouldn't that give it more pulling torque? Granted, most individuals these days don't have a need for that kind of power
@matthewanderson9912
@matthewanderson9912 5 месяцев назад
@@josephina24 well I could make the argument the 8.1 could potentially be more durable because it’s physically bigger (not just in displacement, it’s literally a bigger engine) but at the same time I can make the argument all that rotating mass is a detriment too. As far as power, the 8.1 made peak torque at 3200 rpm and depending on the model that would have been 440-455 pound feet. So the 6.6 is making awfully close to that according to GMs dyno chart at that rpm. It’s definitely making over 400 foot pounds of torque at 2000 rpm. So maybe the 8.1 is making more torque below 2000 rpm, but it sound be similar. And the added HP from the 6.6 L8T would more than offset that in my opinion. Now like I said, it would truly be a game changer if GM made a new Big Block Chevy engine with the LS/LT style heads and intake. Chevrolet Performance makes the ZZ632 crate engine which does just that and it makes 1004 hp and 876 foot pounds of torque on pump gas. If they used that technology for a production engine around 500 cubic inches it would just be revolutionary for gas HD trucks.
@josephina24
@josephina24 5 месяцев назад
@matthewanderson9912 If only the 632 did not cost as much as a small house lol. It's a badass engine for certain, the displacement and mass out of the 8.1 is a definite detriment to its fuel economy, but hey. If I'm getting single digits it's going to be in style! Lol

My family owned a 2003 Chevy Suburban 1500 LT, It was our family vehicle for over 10 years and it had over 320,000 miles on it with the original engine and transmission. We loved how is handled our steep gravel drive way even when it was covered in snow and ice. Everyone in my family of 9 could fit in it plus a load of groceries. And everyone of us would tell you we never felt unsafe driving around in our hunk of steel. But sadly we lost it in an accident in which it saved my brothers life, and still drove away, but was totaled by our insurance.

I have a 04 black 2500 4x4 suburban. I just purchased it about a week ago, from the original owner still has the original price tag in the glove box with all the options it optioned out with the 8.1 L at $50,735. This vehicle just turned 102,000 miles. She’s a little sun faded from setting out, for the last four years it lost its spot in the garage but that don’t bother me any. Even has the factory cab lights on the top of it like some three-quarter tons would have. Also it has the 3:73 gears, I took it on a 350 mile road trip with the cruise set at about 65 miles an hour and heck it averaged about 16 1/2 miles a gallon here at about sea level in Texas so I didn’t figure that was too bad.

The fact that I've only seen one person in these comments mention the consistent failure of the gage clusters and HVAC controls and actuators is criminal. I have an 03 Siera half ton and I've gone through two HVAC control modules and a couple actuators. Luckily the gauge cluster had already been replaced when I got it, and it just hit 200k a week or so ago. That being said, every tradesman/repair man who has come through my house (and there have been a lot this year) has offered to buy it for more than it's probably worth, and I don't sell for the same reason they want to buy: even at some inflated prices, you can't get a vehicle that will do what there things do for less than 30,000 new.

My issues is the 4x4 (think its just the switch), headliner and heater core hoses went out on a trip had to do the bypass fix. Now the knock sensors. Other than that the engine is strong has several leaks but doesn't leave drops, running ATP seems to be doing the job. Was just using this till prices drop on a gx or 4runner but I like it so much I may just keep it for trails that may result in a ton of pinstriping and home repair chores.

With so many made and on the road though, it'll be a very long time before they become rare. That 8.1 is such a beast of an engine as well. What does it come out at for cubic inches? Nice video 🙌. I have a Chevy Suburban 1999 2500 LT 4x4 that I call THE BEAST. It has the 7.2 (aka 454cu). This was my tow rig. I just use it like a truck these days. Not a daily drive @ 11mpg. It only has 140,000 miles. Two tone black/ silver. Never fails to start. I afraid to say it’s time for it to go. I keep saying I’ll find a good home for my old friend, but never seem to anything about.

I had the pleasure of owning a 2005 Chevy suburban ls under two hundred thousand miles with all the Bell's and whistles ran pretty fine. Unfortunately you forgot to mention the cons I've seen with most of these vehicles years 00-05 they have some rust issues in the wheel wells rocker panels and rear bumper and tail gates. Mines was pretty clean hardly any rust but I've noticed alot others with rusty issues due to water standing not to mention the roof liners also.

The GMT800 definitely is one of GM's hits. I think the 1st gen Buick Enclave was too. We own/ed both. The Enclave is so solid and quiet and roomy even with 200+k and It has a LOT more cargo room behind the 3rd row than the GMT-800! I recall opening both and being shocked at how much more the Enclave had! I would also put the 99-02 (pre 3v engines) Expedition in there as well. Same longevity, feels great to dive, plenty of room and they go and go and go. I just picked up a 2001 5.4, one owner, 75K miles, "over" maintenance records (Oil every 6 months regardless of miles.) drives almost like brand new!. Yeah, the 5.4 isn't a beast powerwise, but it's right there or a little stronger than the 5.3 so it's not horrible. I wish they put the V10 in the Expedition, but....that's always been the problem with Ford. Limited engine options.

Can't beat an 800. Grew up in them and there's just a great feeling every time getting behind the wheel. Currently daily a 01 suburban 8.1 {196k mi) but have had many others several with 300-400k miles and still much life left. Absolute beast of a vehicle and will do anything you ask it to. I also have a 2023 ram cummins and I will walk past it and take the old beater almost any time, almost hate to admit it but they are just peak GM truck.

My 02 8.1 Silverado had an Allison 5 speed auto trans. Probably the biggest regret I have is trading in that truck. At the time I could no longer afford to drive it. Was averaging 8-10 mpg. But man that torque (swore it was 475 tq) it was a hoot to drive. Especially flooring it on the hwy.

I have a GMT900 platform 2500 Suburban w/ 6.0L that I use to haul my family of 6 and 33' 9400 GVWR travel trailer and it performs great. I will likely pick up a GMT800 w/ 8.1L and 4.10s in future for sheer towing capability. I have 250k miles on mine so don't be afraid to step into one of these rigs with some miles on them! Routine maintenance plus typical older vehicle maintenance and she'll outlast you and your kids!

Known fact: the Chevrolet Avalanche is based on the GMT-800 platform, sharing the chassis, drivetrain and wheelbase with the Suburban/Yukon XL along with a 2500 with 8.1L engine option as well. My mom owned a 2004 Avalanche with the 5.3l, absolutely love that truck. Super comfortable and reliable, took it on dozens of road trips and had a blast. Learned to drive with it as well. Had over 128,000 miles when we sold it. Sad to see it go but I hope to get one in a 2500 and 2013 Black Diamond Edition someday. And sorry Brendon, your last video showcasing your Lincoln Town Car is base on reliable platform, you are wrong. This platform along with the others are the truly great and reliable platform ever in automotive history. Make up your mind, dude,😁

My family has a 06 Yukon XL Denali that’s the last year of the 800’s, but it’s a tad weird. It has the 6 liter like the 2500, but the transmission is a beefier version of the 1500 transmission. The base gets a 4L60, the Denali got a 4L65, the 6 liter 2500 got a 4L80, and the 8.1 2500 got a 4L85
