Dad had a Renault 5 turbo "cevenne " version in 1983 , imagine a little 1.4 litre with 285 HP !!! i remember humiliate porsche 911 and other bmw 528 i !!! A monster i love this car so much ! Friendly from belgium ^^

Normal ! pour trouver de la force brute faut se replonger en arrière ! aujourd'hui avec la mode du "downsizing" on en revient a des petit moteur turbo mais plutot linéaire comparé a madame r5turbo ^^

Great video, Doctor! Talking of French cars, if you've a mind to it, I think your analysis of a mid-1970's R17 Gordini would make an interesting video. I've read a lot of people's accounts of either owning or driving a Turbo 2. To a person ... they all say it is a singular driving experience unlike anything else. When I was a young buck in 1979 I owned a new R5 ("Le Car" here in the states) with the big fold-back sunroof. It was fun to drive but not fast. I wished Renault would export their R5 Alpine then. But no. The stock R5 Alpine had nearly double the horsepower of my R5.

The rally version of 205 t16 was world rally champion but the street version was a fiasco ! but the renault 5 street or rally version was very good ! look today : how much street version of 205 t16 on demonstration per how much r5turbo ? ...

That's just a place for another 1.4 to move front wheels ^^ 2x 160 hp = 320 or a Maxi 5 Turbo version (350 x 2 = 700 ooooow yesssssss it's good to dream ! )

Of course compared to the Turbo 1 the Turbo 2 lost a lot of the very special performance parts, the very expensive Bertone seats and dashboard. It was also made by Renault rather than Alpine. On the upside it was cheaper and they made 10x as many.

Good question. I believe they were some form of 'cup' mirrors - don't know precisely as they were already on the car when I first bought it.

Did they not do one called the Renault 5 Gordini an even faster version

They did build a 5 Gordini Turbo as well yeah (called Gordini in the UK because of copyright issues, it was called 5 Alpine Turbo elsewhere). That was a cheaper, slower, mass produced variant though. They built millions of them, whereas they only built about 3200 5 Turbo 2s.

The 5 Gordini was initially a 1397cc, 90hp front wheel drive car known as the 5 Alpine on the continent. It later became the 5 Gordini (Alpine) Turbo with the same 1397cc front wheel drive but with a turbocharged 105hp. The first rear drive Turbo (1) used roughly the same engine as the Gordini but with a huge Turbo, equally huge intercooler and Bosch fuel injection. Initially rated at 160hp - this was mated to a Renault 30 derived gearbox, it was the easiest thing in the world to increase the power to around 200hp. Using special liners and a truck load of other modifications resulted eventually in the Maxi 5 Turbo's as driven to fame by the likes of Jean Ragnotti. These cars were producing up to 350hp and on tarmac were more than a match for the 4wd Audi Quattros... To drive any of the differing forms of 5 Turbo is a unique experience I've never managed to repeat since owning one in the 1990's........

The R5 Alpine ( introduction 1976 ) with 93pk was the real hot hatch as a sort of successor of the R 8 Gordini. I wonder what car is more difficult to drive . We must ask mr Ragnotti ..

4:53 yup stock version have 160 HP , but if you want ( with money of course) many version had 185/200 to 300 and more (300 to 420 in competition) allways with the small 1.4 (enlarged to ....1.5 in MAXI5TUBO with 350hp ) Just the "basic" version 160 hp is capable to humiliate a ford mustang with a small block V8...3X larger than Renault engine hahaha

It was just as fast as a Mustang SVO of the time. The Turbo 2 would certainly do better handling-wise.

@@MrCarGuy The Turbo 2 have exactly the same engine then a 5 Turbo ,just doors and roof changed (build by steel not aluminium and have another dashboard ) but the engine is a same with same power ^^

I had one with the 185hp bigger intercooler, we improved on that with a better intake and fitted a straight through Devil exhaust making it just 200hp on the dyno. Fantastic car - I loved it....
