The 2016 MacBook Pro’s we’re good before the keyboard failure. I’d argue the ports aren’t an issue as these tb3 ports can literally be any port you want & multiple of them, even the less powerful ones. I wouldn’t say non-upgradability isn’t an issue simply because Tech is becoming so good that if you keep doubling the performance, the performance increase will be less noticeable each time (kinda like the law of diminishing returns). And 8gb of ram is totally fine, even 4gb of ram by today’s standards is fine. Imo, the 2016 MacBook Pro 13” Touch Bar is one of the best (minus the keyboard issue).

The 2011 model is not that bad, you can easily disable the discrete gpu and still use it on igpu. I use mine on igpu with the latest os x mojave using a patch and still runs flawlessly.

That's why I bought a refurbished (new battery + display) 2015 MBP with dPGU for 1200$. In December 2019, yeah. Because it is the last reliable PRO macbook. Everything from 2016-2018 is just trash. Faulty keyboard and flex cable, poor battery Whr, pathetic I/O selection, no Magsafe, no SD-port, speaker and T2 problems, trackpad too big (palm rejection meh), touchbar mostly useless, overall too expensive, and they even killed the glowing apple logo... just pathetic. The battery life got worse, the speakers are also unreliable, the display is basically the same, and the body only changed to be marginally thinner and less functional. There really is nothing good about the 2016-2018 MacBooks. Thé Pro name shouldn’t even be there anymore because it doesn’t really benefit any professionals: the keyboard limits writers/programmers, the OS limits engineers(virtually no CAD software), the port selection - lack of touch function and display limits artists.... These devices are literally just faulty drink coasters for casual users, and confirmation bias for people who think MacOS is somehow superior to Windows for video editing.

There are a few more issues as well that you can add to the list; so many of these come through my work, many of them also start to bend at the bottom of the lid near the hinges because the metal on the lid is so thin, the hinges bend the metal they are mounted to on the frame of the laptop and if you get as much as 1 grain of dirt in between the frame and MBP logo it will crack the glass at the base of the screen when you close it. I have never seen any of those happen to older generation Pro's before

I'm a designer and developer, and as my MacBook Pro is the tool I use for work, I don't mind paying a king's ransom for a high-end machine. I've purchased the top-of-the-line model nearly every year for over a decade. That said, the 2016 model is the first one I've ever sent back. After spending nearly $5k, losing ports, dedicated F keys, and key travel (which makes my job harder as someone who writes code 12 hours a day), I was the most unhappy I've ever been with any of Apple's products. I went back to my 2015 MacBook Pro, upgraded the SSD with a 1TB OWC model, and haven't looked back. And if this machine fails, I know I can find a fully spec'd model on Craigslist for roughly $1200-$1500. I refuse to buy another MacBook Pro until Apple gives me a usable keyboard, and drops their ridiculous notion that a Pro machine requires a dedicated emoji bar.

The 12” 2015 was even worse because it had the original 1st gen butterfly keyboard, only one port, it thermal throttled like crazy and just sucked in performance, and the LCD was so fragile since both itself was much thinner than any other ones ever made even up to now which made it so easy to crack partially which the crack would slowly run through the screen over time and the lack of structure of the machine itself made it so easy to flex and bend the screen or press too hard on it. The only good thing about this model was the battery life and the weight minus the fact that it felt too light to be considered a computer

@mova_2020
@mova_2020 5 лет назад
Well, I bought the exact 13” 2016 fully loaded touch bar version and here is the deal: 1. Never had any issue with the keyboard 2. Do NOT need any old legacy ports when we are in a technology era 3. RAM and SSD soldered on motherboard? It is 2019 brother. You pay and get what you need. If you can’t afford it, then you go with lower and cheaper options. No need for upgrade these days 4. Butterfly keyboard, I personally love it but I do understand some people may not like it (fair point) 5. Screen hinge, well we got to learn how to use technology. I know a lot of people who think laptop is a tank! No that is a piece of technology, doesn’t need to hold up when you try to walk on it!!! 6. Display dillamination is a true point (although I never had any issue because I know how to take care of stuff) so true for those people who have no understanding of how technology works 7. Performance wise, Macs are overpriced for sure, agreed. But you are getting that not for the hardware because software makes up for that. Also Apple is a brand. Not everyone should carry that because people are not equal. So always in the world we should have a different product which differentiate between people Good luck 😉
@griffin8062
@griffin8062 5 лет назад
1. Just because you haven't had an issue doesn't mean there isn't an issue 2. So everything you own is already USB C? Impressive. I still want to use a mouse and an external monitor on a $2000 computer 3. RAM and SSD are upgradeable on similar laptops. Also, making things not upgradeable is bad for the environment and bad for our wallets because things might get thrown out earlier than they have too 4. I can't stand the butterfly keyboard but that's personal preference 5. This is an inherent flaw with the hinge and cable. It's Apple's fault. You are saying I shouldn't open and close my laptop because it might cause the cable to fail

Griffin S 1. No one said their keyboard doesn’t have issue. That is a valid statement. They have issues and they are responsible to fix it but also 50% of the issues are coming from the users who doesn’t know how to use technology. Fair enough that you can eat and drink in front of your laptop and nothing happens and that is where Apple faulty keyboard comes to play. I personally know how to use things and I never had any issues 2. Yes everything I own is USB C from my external hard drive to mouse and monitor etc. you can simply buy a lot of old or low branded laptops who will provide the legacy and old ports you use. No need to pay extra for apple to get less. Remember, Apple is NOT for everyone. 3. True, but no point on upgrading these stuff. The life of a laptop is 2-3 years max. I personally change my phone every year and my laptop every new generation. Upgradability comes into play for those who keep one thing for over a decade which translate to not being a true hardcore technologist. Those people still should stay away from tech and keep using legacy stuff 4. Agreed. That is absolutely subjective. I love it and can’t be as fast as this on other keyboards but do understand your point and have no argue on that. My closest friend hate it and loves MS Laptop keyboard. I respect and know he can be right because of the topic being subjective. 5. No I didn’t say that. The hinge has no issues and I haven’t seen any widely spread reports regarding the hinges. Yes it can happen occasionally to some minor users which is acceptable because it happens. This is not the same as the keyboard. The keyboard issues is widely spread and valid but not the hinge. Good luck

I was going to argue that the 2015 new MacBook is the worst for the ridiculous performance and terrible feeling first-gen keyboard. Then I realized that at least the keyboard wont break easily...

Another awesome video, thank you for your content! So I was wondering, do you think you could make more videos about older Macs? I love those type of videos, maybe even make a video talking about how well some of those unsupported Macs run the latest OS? Just a suggestion :)

I own a 15" Retina mid-2015 MBP, with the fastest CPU available on that line. Best laptop I've ever owned. Four years later, and I think I'm gonna hold onto it for at least 1 or 2 more years. I want to see what Apple does with its rumored upcoming new keyboard on future MBP's.

Worst might be stretching it. I have used this same machine with 16GB of RAM and 512 GB SSD since launch nearly 2 and a half years ago and and aside from it being a dust magnet, no issues at all with machine compared to all the complaints brought up in this video. Maybe I'm lucky. Keyboard gets dirty very easily and is a dust magnet but thankfully no failure to any of the keys at this point.

I ended up replacing my 2016 15" model with a late-2013 15" MBP with max specs. My 2016 suffered from all of these issues and is currently unusable due to flexgate. The older retinas are much more reliable, and you're not losing performance. My 2013 is actually faster than my 2016 was, and it has a better keyboard, and better port selection. Another issue is with the space grey models. The anodization on the metal comes off after minimal use. It wore off the edges on mine and around the ports and is looking terrible now.

It still has great sound, great display, great battery, greatest trackpad, great build quality , great OS ! If you think that other laptops in this price range (aka the windows laptops) have similar issues! It really depends on your preference and deciding which choice will do better for longer !

The a1398 dual graphics MacBook Pro has a quad core i7 processor, 16 GB DDR RAM and a 1 TB SSD. Apple in 2016 failed miserably! You would think they would have surmounted their earlier laptop but instead they produced a $2,000 dud - which I wouldn’t buy for all the tea in China. In a word, the 2016 MBP is garbage and not even worth the Apple tax.

I owned this model for four years and luckily sold mine on eBay to get one of the new M1 MacBook Airs. I am so glad I finally got rid of it while it is still worth at least a bit. These Generations of MacBooks did so much harm to the reputation of the Mac and I am glad, they finally seem to have ironed out all these issues. I hope they don't screw it up again so badly if they give them a redesign.

Even though they don't fail, today butterfly keyboards are still garbage. In my opinion making crap keyboards, soldering RAM and having garbage cooling just to make a laptop thin is not worth it! The late 2009 polycarbonate MacBook patched to Big Sur is my daily driver! This possibly has one of the bests trackpads ever made!

Great video man!! I have a base model macbook air 13,3 inch 2012 and the only macbook i would upgrade to nowadays is the 2015 macbook retina. It seems the most reliable to me and it has all the ports. The butterfly keyboard is not reliable enough for me to consider buying a macbook with one. Greetz from holland bro!!

My HP pavilion (800 dollar machine) scored more than double in cinebench with an i5 8265u and the same specs, yes 8 gb of ram and integrated graphics. It's kinda funny to see you paid less than have the price and get double the performance...
