Scotty would never agree with a USED hybrid. Maybe a new one but not a used one because the batteries have a lifespan that'll cost a shit ton of $$ to replace unless you do all the work yourself.
I own a 2006 Highlander and bought it used in 2008. It’s still going strong-just turned over 230,000 miles and have had no major issues at all. My goal was to get 225,000 miles but it’s runs so good I set the bar to 250,000! Hope I can raise the bar again. Definitely the best vehicle I’ve ever owned.
My 2006 Highlander Hybrid had the 2 brake actuators replaced at $2,600 each, 2 new radiator replacements, climate control system replaced, a/c & heat blower motor assembly replaced, radiator fans/motor assemblies replaced, all 4 power window regulator/motors went out, radio volume control out, left taillight assembly replaced and both headlamp assemblies replaced due to water getting inside. It's just over 180K miles. Even the driver side sun visor would not stay up with replacement at $180 dollars for such a simple thing. Worst vehicle I have ever owned. Alot of money has been poured into this vehicle over the years not including regular maintenance items such as oil changes, batteries, tires, V-belts, hoses, timing belt and water pump.
In 2018 my brother bought a new highlander limited, and gave me his 2005 Limited. As of 2/17/23, it has 232,000 miles on it, and still running strong, plus looks as good as new. Has always been maintained and garaged. Love this suv
I've been driving the 2006 I bought on Greg's advice, for about 5 months now. It has 145,000 miles on it, and looks brand new. Runs great. Ride is great. Feels very much like a luxury vehicle. Greg is right to call it "amazing". I've had over 10 cars in my life, and this one is the best. And that includes Hondas, Toyotas, Mazdas and Nissans. Don't hesitate to buy this vehicle! Greg, and anyone considering getting a Highlander. I ended up getting a 250k mile Highlander because it was the most original, best running, and it was $1500. It still drives absolutely amazing. Every thing is SOUND on the suspension and drive train. Thank you for the review!!!!
I’ve owned and driven my 2006 Highlander since purchasing her Jan 2007 with 11,000 miles. As of Jan 2020 I’ve got 327,300 miles and going strong. I have no plans of selling her and she is my primary driver. I splurge on her when required for maintenance. I do all of the upkeep maintenance myself. I keep her in the garage at home. I can’t speak highly enough about my Highlander. She has been and still is a perfect fit for me. Love her performance (3.5 liter engine) and her looks. Not too big yet big enough to haul my DIY project materials when required. Planning on keeping her forever! Well done TOYOTA!
Just came across your video. It's Oct 2022. We take good care of our cars. My wife has a 2003 base model with V6 and has 92k miles. Original owners, kept in garage and has seat covers. We've had different Toyotas through the last few decades. This one is hands down the best. Perfect size SUV, and comfortable to drive. Lived in CA for its first 90k mile life, now in OR. We had the timing belt and water pump changed before our relocation (even though it did not really require it). No accidents. No lie, people ask us all the time if we want to sell it. Dealers ask if we want to trade it in. I have a 2019 XLE. Hoping it performs and lasts as long as our 2003. Thanks for posting your video.
I couldn’t agree more! I bought my 2001 Highlander V6 4WD Limited new for $32k. I spent another $3000 adding a tv/vcr/dvd with wireless headphones, window tint for the front windows, rock deflector, rain guards, and tube side-steps. (I paid it off in 3 months, so I spent very little on interest.) I also spent $1500 on an extended warranty, only because it was fully refundable at 10yrs/100k miles if I never had to use it, which I didn’t. So I got that money back in full. It had a couple of small recall issues, which were fixed for free. And I have taken very good care of it. The only problem I had was the climate control stopped working around 110k miles, which was in 2016. I pulled the unit myself and sent it to a 3rd party to rebuild for $90, with a 5 year warranty. (A new unit from Toyota would have been $1000.) Unfortunately, I park my car outside under trees year-round. However, the black paint still looks great! I despise peeling clear-coat on cars. All of the parts and materials inside and out have held up exceptionally well. My car only needs a good detailing and it would look brand new. In May of 2018, I had an accident that totaled it out due to its age. I had the opportunity to get a new car (with cash), and seriously shopped for a new SUV. But I ultimately decided to fix my Highlander and keep it because I love it so much! My Highlander is now 17 years old, with 114k miles. I have taken it on several long road trips, including down the entire east coast. Not once have I been worried about my car breaking down, despite its age. I don’t see myself getting rid of this car until it dies. Even if I decide to get a new car at some point, I will likely keep my Highlander as a second car. I am absolutely devoted to it!
J. Smith - You’re most welcome. I like to brag on my car when I get the chance, which isn’t often. Lol No one is impressed with a 17 year old vehicle, regardless of the shape it’s in. However, mine is the first generation, and yours is the second generation. It was completely redesigned in 2008. So yours has little, if any, components in common with mine. I should mention that I have kept up with the recommended maintenance schedule religiously, including the major services. And it does have very low mileage relative to its age. A lot of those miles are highway miles from several road trips. But knowing Toyota, I’m sure yours will be just as reliable as mine has been, if not more so. And I know the Highlander has consistently been highly ranked by Consumer Reports in all model years. I can look up your specific vehicle in the Buyer’s guide, if you’d like. I just need to know which engine it has. The Buyer’s Guide ranks the reliability of different parts of the vehicle so you can see the things that could possibly be an issue at some point. Just take care of it and it will take care of you. Congrats on the new (to you) car!
Oh, and I should mention one of the window motors/regulators is now starting to go out. It’s a rear window that I rarely, if ever, roll down. But I still consider it to be an exceptionally good vehicle. After 17 years, I would expect some issues to start popping up, regardless of the make/model.
I'm a Hyundai loyalist, and just totaled my 2007 v6 Santa Fe w/ 140K miles on it. Now I'm in market for new car. My sis also has Hyundai, a Sonata but she recently bought a Toyota 4Runner that she swears by. She says she's gonna have her highlander forever. Since I'm in the market for a new ride she is encouraging me to go Toyota for the reliability and longevity. So I've been eyeballing Highlanders online. I broke my foot in the accident and am not yet ready to drive, but as soon as I'm cleared by the doc, I plan to start test driving. I've pretty much narrowed my desires down to Honda Pilot (minimally enthused by it's reviews), Hyundai Palisade (not looking forward to experimenting w/ a first line vehicle, ) and a Toyota Highalnder (seems the most reasonable option of the three). I would love to just get a new SantaFe, but Hyundai changed all those engines to 4cylinder and I just can't imagine that being durable over the long span of time I expect to have my car (which is indefinite). So thanks for sharing. You're helping me realize I'm leaning in the right direction. I don't really care for the body of the Highanlander, but I definetly love the idea of the reliability and longevity
private private - Glad I could help! I was also a bit nervous buying the first model year of the first generation of a vehicle. But since it’s a Toyota, I decided to take the risk. Once I test drove it, I was in love. And I’m not thrilled now about the exterior styling of any of the highlanders, but in 2001, it was a head-turner and I loved it. I frequently had compliments on it, and had people asking me what it was because they had never seen one before. Despite my opinion of its looks now, I am still devoted to it because of its safety, reliably, and longevity. Personally, I wouldn’t buy any suv with a 4 cylinder engine, unless it was equipped with a turbo charger. I am a driving enthusiast, and want something quick, responsive, and stable. My highlander is faster and handles better than the ‘95 civic ex I had previously. I have tested my highlander, pushing it to the limits I am comfortable with, and never had any fears of a roll-over, skid, or loss of control. For what it is, I think it’s a great car.
I have the same Highlander, slightly less miles, 216,000, and I completely agree as well. Best car I've ever owned and one of the best cars ever made. Every other Highlander owner I've asked agree. THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!

I agree >we bought a 2002 3.0 with 13,00 miles in 2003. Our kids now drive it with 265,000 and it looks brand new inside and out. absolutely zero problems. routine maintenance and just drive it . unreal reliability. Also a very good driving car. plenty of power too.
I have an 05 4x4 V6 limited edition in perfect, and I mean PERFECT condition. With over 200k miles on it, and only ever performing regular maintenance with the exception of new tires and some headlight restoration...it still runs like a champ. I plan on keeping it for as long as I can.
bought a 2007 toyota highlander with 220k miles on it for 5700$ and very satifisied. Regular maintience done to it. the older toyotas are my favorite no crazy technology or in your face touch screens just simple reliable and durable .
2 years ago my grandfather gave me his 2004 Toyota Highlander V6 Limited (Its either 4WD or AWD I forget) Anyways, as a first car, I love this thing. Its been reliable with regular maintenance/wear and tear. Its agile due to its size and decent engine. Its also really responsive around the corners. Best of all, its pretty good in the snow (New england winters can either be )We added a new Bluetooth radio last year and it makes the car so much more enjoyable during my long commute. Its held up pretty well for New England winters with only a few minor spots of rust. My only gripes are that the driver headlight is fogged from the inside and, I'm having a weird issue where a bulb will be blown and will not work at the beginning of the day but magically at night after work when I turn on my car that bulb works again. Besides that, out of the 3 Toyotas parked in our driveway (other 2 is a 2011 Highlander Limited and a 2019 4Runner Limited) I love my highlander the best cause even though its not like our departed 100 Series Land Cruiser, Its the most exiting of the lot.

Was so happy to see this vehicle reviewed. We just bought a 2008 V6 4WD Highlander with 108K miles for $10,300. This one was also manufactured in Japan and it too is in pristine condition. We absolutely love it and it is very easy to drive, not to mention ultra comfortable compared to the Chevy Impala we had. We are convinced, now more than ever, that we will never own anything other than a Toyota. Oh what a feeling! 😊 (Toyota slogan from the 80's)
My 2013, 110,000km, recent check: city-14.1km/100L(20mpg), hwy-9.1km/100L(31mpg), with 3.5L 6,AWD,all weather tires. Ride, comfort, quality, almost a Lexus!
I've got two of em 2003 and 2012 and they are just amazing. I could take my 03 anyhwere. It's plowed through everything no problem. The 12 seems a bit more fragile but still a beasty SUV with a nice interior.
I have owned many vehicles and I have never found a vehicle that could tow an 18ft ski boat, take you cross country through grueling mud, drive across a field pushing snow up to the front bumper and last for 400K if taken care of and still keep on going. The heater control will eventually give out and need to be repaired and don't back it too deep launching your boat without a breather extension for the rear diff. 5 star quality!!!!!!!!!
I purchased my 2005 4Cyl just last year (2017) from a used car salesman. I have been in love with this car ever since I brought it home. Keep in mind, I have the front wheel drive version, not a sport, not a limited and certainly not with all-wheel drive capability. Just this past weekend, where I live, we were hit with a snow storm that dropped 12 inches. I had to get out into that stuff and put my transmission into the "ECT SNOW" mode. I never had much of an issue going in that stuff and that was with regular radial tires on the car!!! I slipped a little but nothing much to worry about. It's great on gas, in wonderful shape and is a joy to own. I am so happy that I purchased my Highlander!!!
Just picked a cherry! Bought a 2006 Highlander Base with 3.3 V6 with 143k miles. Looks brand new and drives like a luxury SUV -- just $8900 (in 2019). Greg is right on - everything looks great and works perfect, from the knobs and controls to the seat fabric that looks like it was made yesterday! In fact, the only thing that gives it away as not a one or two year old is the mud color carpet in the driver side. Thanks Car Angel! By the way, even the base model has great features, including a sun/moon roof, roof rack, is prepped for towing package. I set the clock to 4:20, but it keeps moving...
204000 on my 07 hybrid. The only issue I've had is a cracked radiator at around 170k, but I never had it flushed. Had it fixed and the car has had no other issues. I have never even had to put brake pads on it! I am terrible about maintenece other than regular oil changes, but that's why I buy Toyotas, low maintenance. He is right about the quality of plastics too. I am not the type to armor all everything weekly like I did when I had my first car years ago. I am amazed at how it's holding up. It's been on a a few road trips over 10 hours, and a few more in the 5 hour range, and a ton of city driving. The body roll bugs me but I can put up with that for having peace of mind that I am driving a mechanically bullet proof vehicle. Will probably trade in for a used 4runner soon. I'm hoping the 4runner handles the beating from the potholes in my poorly maintained city a little better. Don't hesitate to buy a used Highlander. They are tip top quality, and a true friend to anyone that likes to stay away from the repair shop.

Greg I can not agree with you more!! I have an 06 base model but I have a few goodies, v6 AWD power seats sunroof third row sitting. I bought it certified with 30,000 miles on it back in 09. It currently has 173,000 and I have done nothing but regular maintenance, I'm on my third set of tires, just changed the struts back in October and I'm almost due on my third set of brakes, it's great on gas, on the snow, and with three kids gives me plenty of space. I upgraded the radio with a pioneer with hands free use for the smartphones and it's awesome. This is a car that has been so good to me that I refused to get rid of until it dies. Great video. And the Highlander it's a really reliable car. I believe is called Kluger in Japan.
3.5 v6 -2008 limited edition- Silver buy date June 2009 Toyota quality currently 175000 miles and runs perfectly, no rattles, no leaks, regular maintenance, 4th set of tires, oil change every 6000 miles. original shocks struts, we only had to change one thing -water pump at 165,000 miles($350). Amazing long distance ride! my wife loves it and will keep it forever.this is our second Toyota, we had corolla (1998), very comfortable seats, many many more family road trips to go ..............

In August 2016, I finally got my first Japanese car (used) much to my son's delight (he's on his 2nd, a loaded 2015 Nissan Altima that's stunning) as I've owned all of the German cars (except Porsche) multiple times/various models and the cars of Sweden (I still have my Saab 9-5), so it was high time that I gave European car ownership a rest. I settled on a 2013 Toyota Camry LE 4 cylinder (dad would've been proud had he still been here) that was basic, yet nice as it got good fuel economy and was very comfortable. In April some idiot ran a stop sign at high speed and broadsided me pushing me into oncoming traffic on the other side of the road where I was hit a second time head-on. The car was totaled in that crash, but I sustained bruising, scrapes, a broken wrist and needed stitches in my hand. That car saved my life. In 1974 my dad had just bought his 2nd Toyota, a new Corona Mk II (he previously had a '72 Crown) and was hit so badly the car was totaled, but he survived uninjured and that was before airbags were in use. Toyota is supreme!
Bought ours in 2001, 156, 000 miles on it. Still has the ORIGINAL brake pads on it, believe it or not. So much better quality than any GM car we had ever owned. Runs great, quiet, dependable. I'm due a new car after 18 years, but I love this old girl too much.
I am a car dealer and I have one 2005 Highlander Limited with 205,000 miles. I can't believe how smooth the car is and every single thing works like new. People try to lowball me because of the miles, but I know the car is built like smooth tank.
reagan simon I was camping a few weeks ago in a very remote region of the Adirondack mountains. We needed to drive way back into town for supplies and I had been drinking quite a bit. My friend was completely sober so I asked him to drive into town with my 2004 highlander. He kept saying along the route how nice the car drives and how he couldn’t believe it!!
I bought a 04 highlander 3.3L for $300! It has 340K miles and it fucking runs like a champ, have drove it to California, the Oregon coast. I just stay up on the maintenance I've owned it for 2 years now and just had to replace the alternator last week.

Could not agree more! I have an 2004 V6 Highlander and it is still running like it did the day I bought it - seriously. I changed the timing belt and water pump recently (2nd time) when I crossed 185,000 miles. I do all the maintenance on the vehicle myself and it has been very easy to maintain. Absolutely have loved the car and it was the main reason I bought a 2016 model recently. Only hope the new model stays around as long as the older one. Great video!
@@obadiahokurum2649 - change every 100k. It’s the key belt that operates in the engine. Sometimes it’s a chain but on Gen 1 HL it is a belt. If it fails engine will have damage
I have a 2008 base Highlander with 104,000 which is just broken in that I bought last year it was made in Japan It has the room I need for surf fishing or anything else that comes my way and handles so great. Recently my daughter purchased a one owner 2009 Highlander sport with just 68,000 loaded with everything we did pay a high price for it $14,500 but after looking at the carfax and service records we feel like it is a new car plus my daughter is 6' 2" and weights about 280lbs it was the best fit out there without going to a large Suv. I have a 2001 toyota avalon xls with 311,000 miles. My other 1998 toyota four runner has 221,000 miles both still running good and no major problem. I bought my new 2016 toyota highlander xls awd. I will never buy any other car except toyota. It last forever.. believe it or not!

Great review. The 2006 Hybrid 4WD also came in a base model with less amenities like no leather, moonroof or automatic climate control, etc... contrary to what was stated in the video. I owned the base model earlier, but now have a 2006 Highlander Hybrid LTD and love the vehicle. The Ltd. is well worth it over the base model... many little detail improvements/ amenities that are not mentioned in any of the brochures.

Last month I bought a 03 highlander with 263k n the reason I got it it's this...im a tow truck driver and I know about Honda's n Toyota's. I only paid 500 for it n it's real clean n engine n transmission strong!!!
My aunt in SC has almost 500K miles on her's with normal maintenance; she post's pics of the odometer all the time. Even the a/c still works. Best car she's ever owned.
@@thetechlibrarian There used to be a company in NJ named "Ziebart" that for $200 in 1978 my Dad paid them after he bought his new VW bug convertible to drill holes and spray the insides and underneath with rustproofing. When he sold that car in 1992 mechanically worn out and falling apart with nearly 180K miles on it I told him to ask $6000 because the body was virtually rust free and it was a desirable car. He thought it was junk; and he said people were in the driveway fighting for it and he was surprised someone actually paid him $6,000 cash for it.
Bought my 2007 Highlander new & have it now for 16 years & just turned over for 100 000 miles. Had it repainted by 1 of my former playground players for what the insurance gave me & $3,000 cash. He took it apart to paint it the same color blue & it still looks great. My daughter in law is on her 3rd Highland & my son is on his second Tacoma which my grandson drove to high school. My son has a Darango for work but like his new truck much better.

Hi Greg...really appreciate this video. I noticed at the beginning of the video you included the years 2001 - 2007 and then you commented specifically on the 2005, 2006 and 2007 model years. Is the inference that we should not be considering the 2001-2004 model years in a purchasing decision or is it that these models years are still very good but just not as good as 2005-2007?
I love my 2005 Toyota Highlander and we’ve been having it for 15yrs. It’s been the best most reliable used car so far. I have 240k miles on it, it still runs great!! You gotta learn how to maintain your cars. When you do, you’ll realize how good of a car you got. Toyota Highlander is the best reliable car ever!!!☝️🥇🏆
I just bought a 2nd gen 2010 Highlander LE V6 with low miles of 42k. I paid up for it a bit but it's like new. I know it's gonna go 200k miles with usual maintenance. I recently sold my 2005 Camry 4 cyl with 190k. It ran like a top
We bought our highlander hybrid new twelve years ago this day, kept it for 187k miles with no incidental expenses other than a broken radiator at 165k. These really are built like ingots, I got rear-ended twice and the other cars always took all the damage. If you're ever in one just knock on the dashboard plastic, it sounds and feels like tapping on a large boulder
Our 2013 is OK, but some of the electronics drive me nuts. We bought used from a friend a couple of years ago. I have never been able to get the gps display to cooperate with day/ night settings, and the instructions in the manual do not match the display. If I turn on the headlites during the day, eg when it rains, the gps screen goes so dim it’s unusable. But at night, the data screen above the gps won’t dim to night setting. Also, the rear view camera is pretty much unusable at night. And resetting the "maintenance interval" for oil changes is as complicated as setting the time on a 1970s digital watch. It does run well though.
This got a like before I even watched it. I am the second owner (since 2016) of a 2004 FWD only with a 3.3L. Mine has 197K and still has the original struts and exhaust system and still runs great, although the transmission has always been a jerky shifter. I also have problems with the heater control, which was common on these.
My 2005Highlander with 112k mi was a great buy last January at 7k$ Limited has 4wd and 7 seats, Consumer reports reviews are amazing! Only prob I have is local driving eats up gas, w/6 cylinders. Highway even in traffic gets over 20mpgal. Only prob I had was easily resolved, power steering line corroded as it's directly under oil fill. Now ac compressor makes noise. Otherwise we love it! Handles so well

I'm a Realtor so I put quite a few miles on a vehicle I didn't want new but I wanted reliability after listening to this video you confirmed that I should buy the highlander I purchased a used 2005 limited v6 and I love it its perfect for me, here is what's crazy I bought my wife a new toyota rav4 we switched cars for a week it is super nice as well but I missed my ride. I currently have 155k miles and of course still going strong in the highlander. the Interior as you stated in video has no flaws in mine either.
I'm 26 I got my used '03 Highlander 2 years ago when it was about 150k miles on it, now it has 179k miles. Seriously the best car for the money I think I could buy at that price range I got it for about $9,000 super comfy reliable it's not the coolest looking car but it gets me from point A to point B. I think for my next vehicle I might get a used 4Runner or a Tundra, Toyota makes really good cars.
The 4runner's head gaskets are only a problem if you don't know that Toyota will fix the head gaskets for free. Plus, only certain V6's had the Korean gaskets.
I have a 2002 Highlander limited with all the bells and whistles that has 192000 miles on it and all I have done is maintenance as well. Fluids, tires, brakes etc. It still looks and runs awesome. Never a breakdown or check engine light. Absolute favorite vehicle I have ever owned next to my 2008 Toyota Tundra TRD limited. It has 160000 on it and the same goes here, fluid changes, tires and brakes are all that have been replaced. Never an issue and this truck is a beast in every sense of the word. Ill never own anything but Toyota because thise who know drive Toyota.

My mom just got a 3rd gen highlander, we love it. It's actually very luxurious in the XLE trim, and it drives really well, and actually has pretty good pickup. Maybe my first car will be a highlander... is that a good first car? Looking at 1st or 2nd gen.
robert wintersteen It really depends on the trim you choose. It also depends on the terrain and driving style you do. If you're going for the XLE trim, I recommend the LE hybrid as the 2AR FXE ( RAV4 Hybrid Engine ) is put on overseas Lexus vehicles. The CVT is also included so the hybrid will make a little more road noise. Either way you can't go wrong, Toyota has a 8 year warranty on hybrid powertrains and battery. But I've never own or driven a hybrid so this is what I hypothesize on the RAV4 hybrid. There's probably a RAV4 forum that'll answer your question better. (edit: All of these were based on Canadian specs, sorry for not clarifying.)
Excellent car wife and i bought one in 06 brand new still own it and runs perfect currently has 340,000 and counting it looks just like this one same color and trim. I bought a 02 xlt f150 4x4 with 4.6 V8 brand new also best truck i'v ever owned she runs like new cause i do my own maintenance currently has 379,000 original miles on same engine and trans.
