I am convinced that if someone killed Hitler as a baby, another would have taken his place. People tend to pick a bad guy and just blame all the bad things on him. I am convinced that there was a movement going on that picked Hitler as he had some charisma/talent in giving passionate speeches. As far as Goblin babies go? Well, with Orcs in Tolkiens works, they are magically twisted from elves... I am not sure about goblins, but maybe they aren't necessarily birthed, so the question of babies existing at all? Nobody says killing Quasits is a bad thing. But those are just baby demons.If Goblins are just another mortal race in your setting with nothing but a penchant for the more chaotic side of life. Then killing an infant of theirs may be lawful, in the strictest sense of the term. But I don't think any argument could be made that is good. If they are the equivalent of a quasit, that is another story entirely. It's all aqueous, and thus this debate is silly, it's always been silly. Gygax's goblins are quasits not baby tribals. Honestly during the 80s and 90s everyone and their brother was trying to censor and demean Gygax and roleplaying, do people honestly think if he were a card carrying member of the "windmill boys" the moral majority wouldn't have weaponized that against the man!? _"Would you kill baby Hitler?"_ That's the wrong question, and incredibly short-sighted. The architect of the Second World War, and everything that went with it, wasn't Hitler at all. He was just the man who happened to be in charge at the time, and his party existed long before he got there (54 other members). In fact, the only reason he joined at all, was because he was sent by the German army to spy on them. His becoming their leader was just one of history's accidents, and there is every possibility that there would have been the exact same outcome, with another at the helm.

@@fleetcenturion the thought experiment was more about the idea of killing a known evil in its infancy. So in gygax's day, alignment was a rigid construct. All goblin babies would grow up to be evil and do terrible things. Is it a good act in that framework to kill them in their infancy?

@@thepickleddragon8590 - I'm aware of this, but this question is hardly confined to D&D. People ask it everywhere, without considering the implication. We do have to consider though that the stand-in for Hitler may not have been able to get the support for the party, may not have been reckless enough to invade the Rhineland (which would have been stopped with the barest of resistance) and may have done minor things different and not survived the multiple attempts on him. History is caused by a confluence of factors, but it always does need someone to give that final push.

Killing baby Hitler is not an easy question to answer... Could his life course be changed by changing something in his upbringing? Something as simple as giving him a pack of crayons at age 3 could completely change his life, so killing him as a baby would be harsh without trying something else first - however, who is to say that there wasn't something 100 times worse that would take his place - or - what if someone 100 times worse was already in the original timeline, someone killed him, and Hitler took has place? Meaning Hitler was the lesser of two evils? Time Travel is funky to think about.

I don’t have an issue with past monster races being portrayed as good now. My stance is that as long as an evil race isn’t meant to represent a real-world race, it’s fine if they are depicted as evil. Personally, I find that approach boring, so in the few games I've played, we generally avoid linking races to alignments and just do whatever we like. Plus, I think orcs are cool, so I’m biased. Typically, orcs aren’t evil and don’t suffer from a penalty to Intelligence.What really frustrates me is the reason for the change. If someone approaches me respectfully and says, "Hey, I feel this way about the concept of an evil race," even if I disagree, I might consider their perspective. But if they simply tell me, "You're a racist, shut up," without offering an explanation, I’m less inclined to care. It feels like the change is driven more by politics than by a desire for more interesting lore. Even when I agree with someone, especially those on the left, I often find their proposed solutions to be ineffective or just grandstanding. I rather have a system with Chaotic and Lawful alignments, which could accommodate both good and evil characters. Chaotic characters might be unpredictable or driven by strong emotions, which could manifest as an orc who, despite being banned from a town, feels a deep sense of honor and chooses to save it. Or or, a stereotypical orc might be evil and violent, consumed by rage. Lawful characters would be more controlled but potentially stubborn, representing a choice between innovation and change versus order and stagnation. WOTC could have just adopted that system instead of the choice they made. As a Black man, I understand the importance of addressing past issues, but I don’t think we should erase art or history just because it might be uncomfortable. Sometimes, these elements serve as important lessons, and we shouldn’t become so progressive that we’re afraid to discuss or acknowledge them. As for if the creator is or is not racist or maybe just had some bad views here & there idk I don't have enough knowledge do agree or disagree ......and who cares he is not the face of it anymore even before he passed so I do not see the problem, and even if he was there are systems EXACTLY LIKE & SOME EVEN BETTER THAN D&D but just do not have the elements certain people might not like or find offensive ect.

I think there are reasonable critiques about racism in some of the material D&D was inspired by. Tolkien had a lot of weird lineage stuff going on and southern dark skinned humans were the only variety to join Sauron's cause. But Greyhawk is not Middle Earth. The main criticism you could make about D&D and racism is this idea that you automaticaally kill orcs and goblins even down to their newborns solely because they're orcs and goblins. Even though it's possible to communicate with them. The word for that is genocide. There's nothing connecting it to real world minorities but I think a reasonable person could understand why a person who has dealt with racism directed at them might not find that a desirable component of a relaxing game with friends. And I think that's about it, really. No one is served by overstating any of this, imagining that a single person is responsible, or creating imaginary connections with real racist groups or movements. Even Tolkien was far more concerned with praising one group than bashing another. If you look hard enough you can find explicitly white supremacist roleplaying games but they are incredibly rare and unpopular. Overall our hobby does not seem to have much tolerance for open racism.
@thepickleddragon8590
@thepickleddragon8590 29 дней назад
@@lanir9543 that is one way to look at it. If you dive into Tolkien, you do have a scene where Sam laments while standing over a dead easterling, "He was glad that he could not see the dead face. He wondered what the man's name was and where he came from; and if he was really evil of heart, or what lies or threats had led him on the long march from his home; and if he would not really rather have stayed there in peace..." Tolkien was obsessed with the idea of redemption. He made the orcs irredeemable and it really bothered him and it showed in his letters to friends and family. If you dive into the collections of letters, its clear that he didn't think they (the Easterlings and Southrons) were evil at heart. As for D&D orcs and goblins, the early editions were more like Tolkien's orcs. Corrupt to the core and irredeemable but this was a function of the more rigid interpretation of alignment. Players have more nuance today.

@@thepickleddragon8590 I only have a vague recollection of that passage from Tolkien but I agree with the gist of your message. I don't think Tolkien was particularly racist. Art builds on the society around it and I think he just used what he saw. The stories were much more about staying true to who you are even if conflict swallows you whole. A lesson I assume he learned in the war and generously tries to give to the rest of us without requiring such horrible experiences.

@@thepickleddragon8590 The funny thing is Goblins were depicted as evil long before Tolkien, Celtic Mythology has always seen them as evil/ dark Fey (The mischievous goblins were works of 18th century fairy tales) , hell redcaps were a type of goblin in celtic mythology and their hats were red because they dipped them in the blood of the human children and lost travelers they killed. The first time I can think of that I ever saw goblins depicted as a more human-like tribal culture rather than an evil fey and monstrous was when Paizo made them a standard player character race, which I think was to further differentiate them from D&D when they created Pathfinder.

@@lanir9543 Tolkien was a product of his time, while today's society sees a lot of his views as archaic and problematic, to the people of his time he was actually very forward thinking in many of his views, you don't see people of his time commenting on him being overtly more racist than what was considered normal at the time, in fact the opposite, his views on things like the environment, industrialization and war were way ahead of the times, but he was also a child of the times when eugenics was taught as science in school. Compare that to Lovecraft's early writing years, where later in life he even mentioned his views on race, women and sex were problematic, and he also lived in the same time period of Tolkien and other people at that time commented about some of the blatant racism in his viewpoints.

@thepickleddragon8590 Most people simply select their favorite edition, pick and choose a few house-rules, then season to taste. Advanced Crimson Dragon Slayer is slightly more complex than that, but not by much.

Can we just agree that creature races are actually separate races and could be vile and dangerous through instinct or cultural nature like worshipping of evil deities if written this way. They are not as humans describe racism amongst ourselves which is more a bigotry towards ethnicity and appearance. The creatures of Cthulhu are innately evil and players would be hard pressed to think of them as misunderstood and lovable or kind. “My Shoggoth produces tentacles to hug you loving in friendship as you go inexplicably insane. As your madness persists, he realizes he must, put you down out of respect of your very brief friendship and devour you out of respect.” See, he’s not a monster, he’s just made that way. What this person explains actually sounds more like H.P. Lovecraft but even Lovecraft writing can be separated from the writer.

Heck given the nature of fantasy evil races could be caused by members of non evil races choosing to be evil and to turn themselves into a new race with magic in a bid to be more powerful than their original race... and then raising/indoctrinating their kids to be evil because they don't want future generations of their artificially created race to be good.... Throw in an evil god king/queen to enforce this status quo and you basically have Orcs or the Drow..... (With it eventually breaking down over time as the forces of good start to notice cracks in the indoctrination and work to free the younger generations from the evil of their parents....) Or maybe the evil god forcing a race to be evil finally bites it and now members of that race are more free to chose their own path without fear of their evil cultist parents sacrificing them in the name of the now dead evil god....
