Heretics of Dune by Frank Herbert Discussion: Dune Series Part 5 

God Emperor is the most profound by far of the dune sequels written by FH. It is the culmination of the trilogy before it, and the effects of the God Emperor still resound in the last two books after it.

I enjoyed this one because it has characters who are actually good and try to do good. Leto was doing what he was doing for good but he was still a tyrant. The characters and places in heretics really hit a note with me. Even though we don't have any old characters aside from Duncan, the actions taken from previous books by characters are still felt all those years later. Really opened up the universe. 5/5 stars for me.

I found your videos late, but wow, I love your analysis and presentation! Well-spoken, thoughtful (as opposed to knee-jerk reactions, which a lot of book people on RU-vid do), and you don't treat the books like a joke. Your videos are a joy to watch! Glad you're enjoying the Dune series. I started it around the same time, after seeing the 2021 movie, and i loved it! I read some of Brian Herbert's expanded Dune too, which is not as good as Frank's original 6 books and gets a ton of hate, but there's some interesting stuff there too. If I were recommending to someone else, I'd probably say read the first book, then if you like read the other 5. Anyway, just wanted to say I love your thoughtful analysis, and you've got a new subscriber. :)

I think the Honored Matres are the result of renegade Bene Gesserit reverend mothers and Fish Speakers who both went out in the scattering. This makes sense as Leto II mentioned that one of the strengths of his Fish Speakers was their ability to pacify opponents through sex to avoid military conflict. That Honored Matres now use sex as a weapon creating sexual addiction to control men seems a logical evolution. The Bene Tleilax are now able to awaken previous memories in gholas which they weren't able to do before. This puts them on almost equal footing with the Bene Gesserit and their 'other memories'. Their face dancers now are uncontrollable with their actually being able to assume their victims' personas and forget their master's programming. The truth of their Axlotl Tanks may be the reason why Honored Matres have such hatred for males. Ix, though now a minimal player, have developed space vessels able to navigate fold space without Guild Navigators as well as developing No Ships and No Rooms which like the descendants of Siona and Duncan Idaho, are invisible to prescience. The Bene Gesserit are now 'Latter Day' Bene Gesserit very different from what they used to be. This is why there is opposition among them and why is one reason why the term Heretics is appropriate. All this was foreseen by Leto II the God Emperor as his Golden Path which is now becoming a reality.

Just finished this book and enjoyed it way more than others. Miles Teg, Duncan Idaho and Honored Matres. The trauma and pain that makes Teg hallucinate until he has double vision was really good. I also like how the Bene Gesserit call the Matres whores for their use of their skill tactics to use climax power over conquered slaves turning them into addicts.

Great job! I really enjoyed your video. I just finished Heretics today. I thought it was funny how you liked this one better than God Emporer. I wasn't a fan of the time jump either, but I liked it better than this one. I really liked Leto. There was so much politicking and bickering in this one. I also don't like the Tleilaxu. I still enjoyed the book though. Lots of good parts and questions answered. I really liked Teg. Looking forward to Chapterhouse!

I really wanted to see Bene Gesserit lose! Their breeding programme and something about the way they resent love really gets in my nerves. The Bene Gesseits have no moral right to call the Honored Matres whores. Anyways, I still really enjoyed this book. Thank you for the summary, helped me piece together a couple of things that weren't clear in the first reading.
