Heritage 10,000 Mile Review. My thoughts on Heritage vs Touring Bikes

This is my 10,000 mile review of my 2018 Harley-Davidson Heritage 114. In this video I wanted to circle back to the original debate I had when buying the Softail. That debate was Touring bike or Heritage Softail. Ultimately I wanted a more nimble motorcycle that was more capable in town yet able to go on long trips if need be. I just want to give an honest opinion now and help provide some insight to people who might be in the market for a new motorcycle and asking themselves which Harley-Davidson they should buy. More specifically for people between a Heritage and a Touring Bike.

LOVE my '21 Heritage 114. Love it, for all the reasons you state. It's surprisingly nimble (for a 700 + lb bike), handles well, is smooth, is very versatile. I do mostly day trips with the occasional road trip. It's lovely for that. I've had 30 bikes, including a '16 Road Glide Special - which was amazing on a long trip, but honestly a little clunky on local, loop in the mountains stuff (by comparison). These are nothing like my old Triumphs, Ducatis or other speedy bikes I've had. But for chill riding, with honestly, 90% of the performance necessary to keep up with anyone, you cannot beat the Heritage.

Really enjoyed this, thanks Dan. Liked and subbed. I am on the fence about a Heritage vs. a Road King, and am looking around for just this kind of commentary. I'm shorter and lighter for you (5'9", 185lbs.), but I love the Heritage ride, and the overall utility of the bike. The main draw for me is I'm wanting a bike for exactly the reason you mention in the description--capable around town, yet capable of longer trips, 3-5 days.
@GearsGadgets
@GearsGadgets 4 года назад
Thanks for the sub!! Honestly, I prefer the Heritage over the Road King all day, a lot of guys (seemingly most) will tell you that the Road King crushes the Heritage until you hear from Heritage owners that rave about the ride of the Heritage. I wouldn't tell you NOT to get a Road King, but if 95% of your riding is commuting, you can't go wrong with the Heritage. A lot of it to me would come down to which one you think looks better.

@sensei2121
@sensei2121 4 года назад
I have owned both. a 2005 Heritage and 2003, 2008 and 2011 Road King as well as a 2011 Street glide and currently a 2019 Street glide. It is my opinion the Road king is the best ride out there. I love the balanced motor on the Heritage and I absolutely loved my Heritage, but the bar vibration at highway speeds for long distance is noticeable, especially once you get off. your hands tingle for a while. The ride on the freeway on a Road king is by far a lot smoother. It is all a matter of preference, the Heritage and Road king are so similar as far as features and functionality. Its all about the ride and feel and what YOU like. Both bikes are great, but for me, for someone has owned many Harley's and both the bikes in this discussion. The Road King would be the choice for me without hesitation.

@sensei2121
@sensei2121 2 года назад
@@rupertturner7311 If it was newer, maybe they changed something. The counter balanced motor on a softail always is smoother, generally, but the freeway rides always were smoother on a touring model. The best way to tell was looking in the rearview mirror at 75 mph. I could see a car behind me in the rearview mirror on a touring model and on a softail, I could only see an blurred image due to the harmonic vibration.

Just found your blog since the bring it home ride, I like your upfront opinions, as far as the Heritage versus the touring bike, I have a 2015 heritage with a 103 twin cam,(which my wife left me keep when I purchased an 2018 ultra limited) The Milwaukee eight in the ultra limited definitely smoother than a twin cam, although as you say the heritage a lot lighter/less upper weight. I took off the tour pack on the limited and save 40 pounds, I have bad knees. And it did make a big difference when you’re stopped. But love both bikes for their different Ness if that’s a word. One is lighter and easier to maneuver. And the others smoother on the highway and for long distance. There’s my two cents worth. Hope your wife gets a tour and let you keep the heritage to because they’re both great bikes!

I would LOVE to have my Heritage and build it out a bit, then have an Ultra Limited blacked out and kept relatively stock, maybe some pipes and tuner and leave it at that for longer trips. That is a bit of a pipe dream. Maybe when I hit 12 million subscribers in 2038 it will become a reality.

Gears & Gadgets I hope you do get the tourer. But it’s hard to leave it stock again mine was An18 with a 107, while it was new I had it converted to the 114 with stage III screaming eagle, with the two computers. It is very docile and easy to drive if it’s raining and wet or slippery, but when you want to go this thing will go also! Again glad your love the Heritage, hope you hit the lottery and your wife lets you get the ultra Limited!!

I had a 900cc Kawasaki Vulcan Classic LT before I bought my 2010 Heritage....learning curve. The Heritage is PERFECT for ME.....not as big as the RoadKing and easier to navigate the 20mph twists & turns of our local state park, but still more than able for week-long (or longer) trips. The saddlebags need stiffeners before the 'sag' starts, but I love the old-school studded leather. Honestly, it doesn’t feel that much heavier or less nimble than the Vulcan, but the low-end torque & sound from the V&H BigShots just get my juices flowing!🆒

I enjoyed this video and loved the content. I purchased my first Harley back in Jan of this year. I was focused on a touring model from the get go and ended up going with at Street Glide. I honestly didn't really look at other models other than the Ultra Glide but that is still about the same as the SG. I ended up putting lowers and a tour pak on the SG so yeah....it is pretty much an Ultra now. I am starting to really dig the Heritage and may go that route next time. One question, what do you think of those gloves you are wearing? Mine have turned into a fuzzy tipped mess and don't work for $^%% when using my phone. Thanks again for your great content! I have found on that bike that the buffeting all depends on where the rider's line of sight is. If you are getting it you need to raise the shield up until it no longer occurs. On my bike I had to install a 21" shield to get my line of sight below the top of the shield. Once I achieved this buffeting was no longer an issue on my bike ever again! Once the buffeting is gone, you can incrementally lower the shield until buffeting starts and then you will know exactly what height is going to eliminate it.

In 2015 I went to buy a road king and came home with a Heritage 103. I ride the hell out of my bike. I ride a KTM 1290 Super Duke too so needed something in a long haul bike that felt good in the twisties as well, that's the Heritage. I am 6' and was getting some buffeting but on long hauls I throw on the "fangs" and my tall vented windshield and it goes away completely. Now if I could just figure out what I am going to do if I ever get a flat out in the boonies with a tube tire...Good review, keep up the great work

Good video. I can't comment on all the touring bikes. I can however comment on the 2018 Street Glide Special. There is no comparison between the touring bikes and the new softail chassis. As a solo rider the 2019 Sport Glide is miles ahead of the Street Glide. Power to Weight Ratio/Comfort/Handling. I enjoyed my 2018 Street Glide Special immensely. I made the mistake of test riding the Sport Glide on a whim. A couple weeks later the Street Glide Special was gone and the Sport Glide was home. I haven't looked back. Oh and since you were discussing the Heritage Classic I should probably reference it. My wife owns a 2018 with the 107. Right at 10,000 miles on the clock. She absolutely loves the ride and handling. Claims this is her forever Harley. I must admit I prefer my Sport Glide just because it's mine. LOL. I haven't ridden her Heritage much. With that said I prefer it over the touring chassis also. Not bashing touring bikes. They are nice. The MoCo really needs to upgrade their chassis and suspension on the touring bikes. Its way overdue. Finally; Stage 2. Do it. My Sport Glide has 2500 miles on the clock. Put those miles on in roughly 3 weeks. I just had the Stage 2 upgrade done this week. Picked it up on Wednesday. I stayed all Screamin' Eagle to preserve the warranty. Went with torque cam/Tuner/smart tune module/heavy breather/street cannon muffler/dyno tuning. Only 25 miles on the current build. Dang Colorado snow. HaHa. WOW what a difference. From stock to stage 2 is remarkable. Really woke the M8 107 up. Wasn't inexpensive. Especially all at once. Worth every penny in my estimation. This Stage 2 Sport Glide just may be my forever Harley. I know with 100% certainty it is my favorite Harley of the models I've owned. Take Care.

Thanks for the input BCB. Not many out there that would say they traded in a street glide for a sport glide but I could see why. Thanks Dave. Yeah I think the “You cant tour on a softail” is nonsense and is usually just said from someone who owns a touring bike and mistakes “Cant” for “less ideal”. I think we can all acknowledge that touring cross country on an Ultra Limited would be WAY more comfortable than on a sportster 1200 but that doesn’t mean the Ultra Limited makes sense for someone who rides 95% around town and only hammers out the occasional (once a year) long distance trip kind of thing. I think the Heritage is awesome for an all round bike.

you can tour easily on a heritage. You can tour on a Moped if you put your mind to it , especially solo. Things change when you add a passenger for multi-day travels. We toured on a cruiser set up like your bike when we first married. Now, for me , it's all about the passengers experience. She gets the wide comfy seat (heated if needed), in her case, arm rests, and the wrap around pad of the trunk, and tunes on the Roadmaster. As long as she enjoys it, we can keep riding together as long as possible.

Thanks Nick, I don't think 600 miles is an insane amount of riding but its certainly not below average either. I compare it to the guys who buy bikes then wont ride when its above 90 or below 70 degrees and 3 years in have 5,000 miles on their bikes. I am just your average commuter who rides all year round unless work needs me in my car for the day which happens on occasion. I will definitely do a video on my setup in the near future for you.

I am new to your channel and catching up on some of your vids.i really appreciate your review of the new Heritage. I had a chance to throw a leg over the road glide, street glide but felt they where not balanced and too top heavy. The Heritage felt much more balanced and can be thrown around, just more controllable in all situations in my opinion. However, I think the Indian chieftain is the ultimate duel purpose bike. It’s balance and handling is one of its main features and the seating position lets you sit into the bike as opposed to on top of it. I highly recommend test riding one before jumping into a touring model Harley.

The benefits of the bigger touring bikes is non-spoked wheels if you want to be able to patch a tire, the bigger frame if you are riding 2-up, and the stock engine Gaurd for highway pegs if you want to stretch out. I really wish Harley would put the RDRS system on the softails. While the Road King is "only" a 107 and is a bit heavier, the ability to add the RDRS system, just make it a better value for your dollar. If you can get the police version brand new, then do that because it is a great deal, swap the seat and police rack on the back and you are good to go. Some people are like "RDRS system, who cares" having moved from a 2014 Fatbob to a 2020 Street Glide Special, it is just really, really nice to have. Specials have a bit harder ride, due to the fact that the rims are larger and thus you have less rubber to absorb bumps.

I would qualify Swiss army knife to be Swiss army knife HD or vtwin. A GS or RT would be more of a Swiss army knife. That said, how would that bike work for the very tall? 6'5, 34" inseam , 250. The Heritage 114 is a nice bike as is the RK. There is quite a difference in weight though, which isn't prohibitive, but 100lbs is 100lbs. A nail in a tubeless tire usually gives you lots of warning that something ain't right, you pull over to see what is going on and discover you are losing air. On a tube tire it goes bang and you have your hands full instantly and hopefully get it to the side of the road before the tire comes off the rim. If its the rear tire you are lucky. If its the front................ My Harley has tubeless tires no doubt.

Buffeting cannot be fixed by the windshield size or its position. Turbulence comes from down below your knee level. Angled windshield pushes air upward and at the same time scooping air into cockpit from down below. And because there is some "vacuum" behind the screen, air stream happily jumps into cockpit from below, to compensate the pressure... It hits your torso then rides up to the chin bar of a helmet causing buffeting... The only way to stop buffeting is to install lower wind deflectors angled the way so they push air downward. That will block the turbulent stream entering cockpit from below and you'll ride inside of a capsule of still air.

I've gone cross country on sport bikes and logged thousands on my hayabusa and nothing has ever been as comfortable as my road glide. I got tired of having to strap down everything or use a back pack. The power is a non issue , harleys are slow bikes and lowest horsepower bike I've ever rode. But hands down the comfort and storage is what I love about my RG. To each their own. I got alot shit from friends about my RG because I'm younger and its gonna breaker down. 58K miles stage 2 and never been stranded three years of RG ownership. My opinion. When me and the wife go to sturgis everything fits in tour pack. You had 70 pounds. That's seems like alot of stuff.

Yeah about 15 lbs was stuff that I carried for filming that most people don’t need to pack. I also had a tent and camping gear that wasn’t necessarily lightweight. I think the Heritage is the better handling and much less top heavy. For a solo rider, it'd be great. As a touring bike, it's kinda let down by tube tires and lack of luggage space. Since I ride two up a lot, I went Road King, but if I were solo, it'd be Heritage all the way with some mag wheels. Use Ride On tire sealant. It's not as effective on tube tires, but it's damn near undefeatable on a tubeless tire.

I hear a lot of people talking about lowering your center of gravity when going around corners. Yes, lower center of gravity helps you turn faster, but higher center of gravity gets you around the corner with less lean angle. I see a lot of people confusing getting down and low with leaning off. Many people would be better off with higher bars, so that they can sit up more when going around corners, keep their center of gravity higher, and reduce their lean angle.
@thejakein7867
@thejakein7867 4 года назад
@@GearsGadgets you see how these Dyna guys raise thier bikes to get more lean angle? You also see a lot more "performance baggers" coming out. That doesn't mean just throw in a bigger engine and now it's a performance bagger. Its better brakes, shocks, handlebars, lean angles. Sure, slam your 800 pound bike to the ground for that low COG and you'll do great on straight aways. Just dont plan to make any turns. Maybe you're just not intune with the performance cruiser scene. That's ok. My original post was simply stating that I've ridden sport touring bikes and they have a high center of gravity, believe it or not. And it's not a bad thing. Takes getting use to but yes these Harleys do have a low center of gravity and that's why they take corners like shit. And many people raise thier likes an inch or 2 to get that extra lean angle.
