I got this thing some time after watching this video. MAN it kicks some serious behind lol. I have thrown the whole kitchen sink at it and more. Super super super versatile and flavorful compressor. The sidechain filters are unreal, and you can use it to really open up the low end of your mix or even alternatively as a de-harsher in certain instances. You can push the output to add some color and weight from anything to an individual stereo track to a whole mix. I use it to glue things together in a colorful and musical way. It sounds so amazing on synths, drums and instrument groups. The ultrafast attack time is an absolute Swiss army knife, and the auto release settings are really useful and musical. I love everything about this compressor, and I am extremely extremely pleased with it. Heritage audio is officially on the map for me. Great review man!

Thanks for the fun and the info. I wished the guys at rnd were as cool. In my case, I'm tracking entire jazz bands with a single stereo mic. Any advice for me?
@FuzzywallzMastering
@FuzzywallzMastering Год назад
Wow! A single stereo mic to record entire jazz bands...That could be quite the challenge, while also being a lot of fun. Our initial thoughts are to be very critical of mic placement and also how the band(s) set up. The room is also going to be extremely important. Even with close mic placement, you're probably going to end up with a lot more room ambience than expected. So, the solution would be to get the players as close as possible (to taste), while also making sure they have good eye contact and that you balance their individual volumes by pushing them closer or further from the mic. Personally we have had mixed results when trying this method. Best of luck and have fun!

If you're still looking to add a mastering grade diode bridge comp to your chain, I'd suggest looking at the Buzz Audio DBC-M, IGS V8, or Neve 5254. Best of luck.

Thanks for the suggestions! All of those are some tasty pieces of gear. If we get our filthy hands on any of those, we’ll be sure to review them.

How will the De-ess through the sidechain if the compression still works over the full range regardless of sidechain
@FuzzywallzMastering
@FuzzywallzMastering 10 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe if you haven't yet! To answer your question... You’re right- In this unit and many other analog designs, the De-Essing function uses a full-range compressor (1-Band) that reacts based on what’s filtered by the side chain. The unit compresses the whole audio program when a high-frequency/sibilant sound passes the threshold, and thus “De-Esses” the audio. In our experience this is just another alternative to multi-band or frequency-specific compressors/limiters. Sometimes one methodology work better than the other...it really depends on what you’re trying to do and what you’re working with. Sometimes you want the whole signal to move with the de-essing action and sometimes it’s better to use something that only affects the frequency bands you want. Hope that helps!

I don't like that the Successor doesn't have true bypass. Does it at least pass audio through when the unit is completely turned off?
@FuzzywallzMastering
@FuzzywallzMastering 6 месяцев назад
I just double checked and when the unit is powered-off, no audio passes through.

@@FuzzywallzMastering thank you so much for checking! That's indeed a bummer, no chaining this thing...

If you're a mastering engineer maybe it's difficult not having a mastering console...not even a Maselec MTC-1X but at least a Dangerous Liaison. Being reliant on the hard-wired "bypass chain" takes a number of vintage units out of consideration and you can't swap the order of things without crawling underneath the desk or using a patchbay. It's probably smart to figure out how to avoid needing a mastering console, and I'm not saying the Liaison is cheap but at least it's not 10K.
@FuzzywallzMastering
@FuzzywallzMastering Год назад
Thanks for watching! All you points are very good and, yes, with our current setup we cannot easily swap the order of analog, hardware units- like one could with switching device (or mastering console) of some kind. Luckily, all of our current mastering hardware units have quiet, “hard” bypass functionality, and I NEVER wish to switch the order….it’s just kind of come together that way! When the day comes that we feel the need to add a switching device, mastering console or similar; it will happen. In fact, those Dutch audio units look damn tempting!…Cheers!

I would still use it on a final mix as a "bus compressor" (just a little bit) before entering the wonderful land of "almost dead plugins" for final mastering. And even then is it a sin to use it as the final mastering compressor (for reanimation) if all the dead plugins fail to deliver? :))) How can it "do too much" as a bus compressor, you can use the blend knob to lower the impact or not?
@FuzzywallzMastering
@FuzzywallzMastering Год назад
Hey thanks for watching! Our suggestion is that there’s really no rules here and that every mix is different, so therefore we could see plenty of situations where the Successor would work as a bus processor, either alone or with whatever software (or hardware) one desires. And yes, having that blend knob does open up all sorts of options and would help dial-down an excess gain reduction. Does that help?
