Hi- just started watching your videos. I am hoping to have a farm of my own soon and I want to learn as much about heritage breeds as I can. I love that you guys incorporate info about heritage breeds into your videos. I don’t want to eat the animals, I just want a great variety of animals participating in a healthy ecosystem. Thanks!

Heritage breeds are definitely right for your situation! You can checkout some of our spotlight video playlists where we feature many different breeds of many farm animals…including lots of heritage breeds!

I have a heritage red and 3 royal palm, raising the royal palm chicks was a challenge, I have never raised turkeys before, 3 of 6 survived, it was a learning curve.
@HobbyFarmGuys

Turkey poults are very fragile and often have quite a few that don't survive long.

They need more proteins when they are below 2 months
@MosaicHomestead

@@okothyoga I fed them eggs with crushed egg shells inside for extra protein, bird pox killed 2, a mongoose probably got the 3rd, what I did learn was Turkeys are stupid animals 😆, I have one that goes around the gate and can't find it's way back.

I have both but still new at it. My heritage turkeys I bought six of them and it looks like four of them are toms. I’m butchering my broad breasted this weekend, but not sure what I’m gonna do with those four times. If they’re aggressive like you say good thing I got plenty of freezer space I guess.

My ranger roosters are that vicious. Had to set up a single cages for them to recover in. They are free range and othen see roosters chasing or challenging each other. Their size is also incredible somewhere over 10 lbs.

Don’t know much about turkeys at all. Are there domestic versions of the wild breeds we have here in the West like the Merriams and Rio Grandes? Or are they just considered wild birds and you need a license from the Division of Wildlife Resources to raise them?
@HobbyFarmGuys
@HobbyFarmGuys Год назад
There aren’t really domestic versions of the wild breeds. Domestication of turkeys has a crazy history as wild turkeys were brought to Europe, domesticated, and then returned to North America. There they were further developed (wild turkeys once again played a role) and many of the breeds we know today went through that process. But as for your question…I don’t know anyone who keeps wild breeds (though I know that some do) so I’m not sure of the requirements. I assume a license is needed.

can the broad breasted fly over a 5 feet fence? Is wing clipping enough to control the heritage ones from flying?
@HobbyFarmGuys
@HobbyFarmGuys 8 месяцев назад
A broad breasted will not clear a 5’ fence. Most heritage breeds can, but it they are have a good source of food & water, and a secure place to roost they usually won’t wander too far. If they do, wing clipping can help keep them home.

Can you slow grow on a lower protein regarding Broad Breasted? I know they need a higher protein feed but can it be done for longer life?
@HobbyFarmGuys
@HobbyFarmGuys 7 месяцев назад
These birds are bred to grow quickly, so a lower protein content would slow growth but wouldn't do much to improve health.
