I have now had an Embody for 2.5 years or so and absolutely love it. Easy to use, and extremely functional. IMO, it is a bit awkward visually, but oh well, because it's designed so well I could care less. Lots of colors to choose from...I just opted for a charcoal fabric/black frame with polished aluminum since it would work any place if I moved. There was a small tear in one of the foam armpads when I got the chair, but HM sent replacements without much trouble! Awesome chair!
Thanks for your question jdumars! We're glad you were able to resolve the issue with your Embody Chair. Sometimes the height adjustment gets stuck in transit due to vibrations of the truck. It's a forceful fix, but it does remedy the situation. Once unstuck the joystick should be easy to use. If you have more questions about using your Embody, we have a user guide on our site that might help you out. Enjoy! -Matt
Thanks for your question Piranha. The Embody Chair is made for reclining. I was sitting up to better engage the audience. Please forgive my skeletal form for its discomforting appearance, I am no good in front of cameras. Bottom line: the Embody Chair is best used in a reclined position, not sitting totally upright or forward. -Matt
One major feature you missed (which might have been commented on) is the ability to adjust seat depth. by grasping the handles on either side of the chair seat at the front, you can pull it forward to lengthen the seat to support longer legs, or back for shorter legs.
I'd suggest playing with the Backfit adjustment and the tilt control - both are knobs on the right side. The Backfit controls how taught the back is, and the tilt control limits the level of recline you can get in your chair. Hope this helps!
I will agree that the Embody Chair is the most comfortable in a reclined position. The seat depth adjustment works well when your weight isn't right on top of it (ie when you're leaning forward). If you lean forward in this chair for a long time then yes, the extended seat depth is not brilliant. The Aeron Chair, on the other hand, is very conducive to leaning forward. As far as they both go, you generally get what you pay for, and the 12-year warranty does speak to the quality of the chairs.
how do you suppose him sit better? he's already sitting with his back against the back rest. He happens to have a huge S curve which makes it looks like he's slouching but he's not
@@piotr9914 At the end he's slouched over with shoulders rolled forward. But he said he's only sat in it for a week. Posture that took years to become poor. Is not corrected in one week...
@SmartFurniture Thanks for your response, there is a Herman Miller store here in my City but I think it closed down, drove by it couldn't find it. Be nice to sit in one of these to see for myself. I mean you can either buy the Embody and go "Ergo" or get Bill Clinton's Oval Office chair from Trinity Furniture and go "Executive" Decisions decisions...Biggest factor for me is my desk is tempered glass. So the leather chair wouldn't fit real well. But I could change desks too...
Hi solidcube8, Some people prefer the arms of their chair attached to the back of the chair, some prefer them attached to the seat. If you want your arms to remain rested on straight armrests (arms resting parallel to the ground), then I would suggest a Steelcase or HON office chair. They offer more headrest options as well. Thanks! -Matt
Ok, nevermind. I figured it out. The notch or cut out of the clear lever should be facing down toward the floor but really, I just wasn't pressing down hard enough. You really have to push hard on that little knob, at least on mine. I never pushed that hard since its plastic and I was afraid I'd break it. The thing I found silly was that no instructions came with the chair. Even with the pdf from HM's website, I still needed this review to actually learn & understand everything properlly. Thanks
Hi hobgoblin707- I'm 5' 11". When I'm at my desk I like to sit as far back as I can with a slight recline (basically how I'm pictured in the video). In the Embody, my upper back gets plenty of support. With the back support adjustment, you can make the chair give a whole lot, or feel "springier" depending on your preference. When I sit all the way back my neck is clear of the chair back. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for your input! -Matt
Good video! I purchased the Logitech Version from HM for $1100 shipped to my door brand new. I am able to sit in the chair for hours on end without hurting at all. I love my chair and for $1100 for a brand new limited edition embody is a great deal! Thanks for your video.
you could say that.... I got a gaming chair twice and had to return both because they were way not ergonomic. The head rest is fine on it but the rest of it is not. Lumbar support will not stay and if you get the integrated lumbar support, it most likely won't be the right spot you need it to be. Besides taht, the chair it self is hard as rock and you will experience bone pain from pressure points. I tried the embody chair and when I stand up from it, i felt like my back has been fixed by it, so I bought it immediately. It feels right to lean with it without the head rest as well. You ought to try it out before you claim it sucks just because it doesn't have the headrest.
@WhoChrisLiu ... Also, the fabric is very soft and breathable. I know leather is great but if it's a choice between all these features and simple leather upholstery, I would choose the Embody Chair. But that's just me. I hope this helps.

Even though you did not purchase your chair from us, we'll hook you up. Feel free to message us and let us know what you need.
I have to say that after trying this and an Aeron the Herman Miller chairs look cool, but tend to be a bit of a bust on comfort and quality. I could see this in a museum of art, but not winning any real ergonomic awards any time soon ;) Just try out the awesome seat depth feature on this chair for a hint about how gimmicky the rest of it is.
@WhoChrisLiu I would recommend it. It's a totally unique chair that is very flexible and breathable. The back is malleable and responsive and can be very stiff or have lots of give. The seat is comfy and never feels "hard". If you visit the Embody Chair page on our website you can see some good closeup pics of the area underneath the seat. I think they demonstrate that a lot of thought went into keeping your backside comfortable. ...
reclining on a chair that does not support the weight of my head gives me neck pain. I love reclining but all my recliners have a back that is high enough to rest my head. HM claims that supporting the thoracic spine stabilizes the neck and so headrest is not needed. i'm not sure if that works for me. i'll look into the steelcase leap with a headrest.
Thanks! Well I ended up with a Aeron, was able to get it for a decent price. Perhaps if I like the Aeron enough I might get a Embody in the future. The Herman Miller store in my city I think is closed so I cant go test. =(
i have this chair. i know how to control adjustment knobs and have read herman miller's instructions. i still can't figure out a backfit setting that is comfortable for me. any tips? thank you.
Hi, I like this chair even if it is way over priced. Can you tell me what the sizes of the chair are. I heard it was maybe 3 different sizes or widths can you please explain which I should go for when I win the Lottery, what part of my body should I be measuring to find the correct Herman Miller chair for myself? Take care and thanks for the review, I have subbed. mrbluenun
matt, how tall are you? i know that the embody comes in one size that can be adjusted. i was trying to see how much upper back & neck support you were getting. shorter people will get greater upper back support. so i was curious to know your height if you don't mind. thanks!
I own this chair but I'm having trouble lowering or raising the height. When I press the adjustment lever up or down, it does not move. From this video, I couldn't tell where the "cut out" notch is on the clear plastic handle. I've tried it, lowering it with the cutout in almost any position (it rotates) and I can't get it to lower. After a while, through freak luck, I managed to raise the chair by lifting on the chair just as I sat up from it and now I can't lower it.Can anyone offer any advice
If reclined is the best position in this chair, i wonder why the arm rests are not able to stand straight while leaning back with the chair. This creates an edge where your arm has to lay on and injures your strains and muscles over time. Also I would need a head rest in this positon.
As someone 6'5" 230lbs. would this chair be tall enough for me? I'm not fat just really tall and I'm looking for something with a high enough back to support my full body
Thank you for the response :) Would you happen to know any retailers that carry this chair so that maybe I can try one out. If your CEO is my size and feels it's a good chair for him then I could definitely see it as being a good chair for me as well.
@hdgamevideos1 It sounds like you are on a well researched track to a new chair. The Embody is made by Herman Miller, a company that doesn’t put headrests on any of their chairs. Other companies like Humanscale and Steelcase have a different opinion and have chairs that have the option of an adjustable headrest. The Humanscale Freedom chair has the largest headrest available. The Steelcase Leap chair and Steelcase Think chair have a much smaller headrest. Message us if we can help further!
Sounds like you may be better suited for a Steelcase Leap or Think Chair or even possibly a Humanscale Freedom Chair. All three can be ordered with a headrest and have wider backs. There are various ergonomic theories out there, of which it seems you and Herman Miller disagree. Herman Miller puts nary a headrest on any of their chairs believing that your head should face forward at all times. The narrow back is designed to support movement in reaching for things when leaned back...(cont.)
...I actually lean back while working most of the time & find it best for a rested spine & my neck loves it. You don't have to recline all the way back or even at all while you work. Embody can be locked so it doesn't recline or set to recline & stop at various intervals. Simply resting your back onto the chair allows some of your upper body weight to shift onto the back of the chair & relieve pressure from your spine to increase blood flow. Feel free to call us & discuss further @ 888.467.6278.
So can you recommend this? Bear in mind you can get a very nice leather armchair for the same amount of money. I mean $1400 for plastic and mesh, its hard to imagine its worth that much? Your paying a lot for design. I havent sat in one of these puppys but I would imagine it to be divine.
This chair seems great. However it seems to be a letdown due to the fact it does not have a head rest for such an expensive fully featyred chair. Do you sell anything that is as comfortable or similar to to this chair that has a headrest?
@fvrfvr1 Ha- I should have stuck with soccer back in middle school. I guess I do resemble him more than a little bit, but I'm most often compared to Roger Waters circa 1970. Now that was one handsome devil.
Hm has a long history of valuing form over function. Unfortunately, its an idea that too many interior designers and office managers buy into. At least until their employees start trading out the $1k+ Aerons they bought for the crappy office chairs they had before because the Aeron is unbearable to sit in for 8 hours a day.
But is it worth....1000$+? Your shoulders were hunched forward and your neck was also tilted forward when you were leaning back...That's actually bad posture. It was a great demonstration, but you haven't really justified the cost at all.
herman miller does not believe in synchro-tilt? notice that the chair back is tied to seat back as it tilts backward !! Embody, great design but very high price there are better alternatives... this is more plastic than substance... yes i sat on it in showroom. Guys wake up herman miller is the most popular among IT folks...but there are better engineered chairs out there from germany...europe for less price...as always europeans are geek engineers dont market-sell hard
Lol too expensive for a chair and OBVIOUSLY no one in the whole world will stay in the same position forever...if they want to move lower they won't be able to as the chair is not flexible enough..... so trust me it's not worth it
you cant really talk much about a lot of things without trying them first and chairs are one of those things, but it's still ugly af i'd rather take a dx racer chair
MafionzoR It's not that it is ugly. It looks quite cool actually. But it is the way it is built. It is build to maintain ur back straight but a person can't always sit in the same position all day so it would be a bit uncomfortable imo :D
Alexa Buty That is the whole point of the chair, it will not get exhausting or uncomfortable. I am currently looking into one as I am not happy with my HÅG H09 9220. I also got a test seat and it was increadible. Pretty sure I will be able to retain the same position for many hours.
