* SPOILER ALERT *
There's a hypersonic plane in the new Top Gun movie. You better believe we've got thoughts on that.
We also discuss filming locations in the movie which our Flight Test Consultant, Tom Fields, has flown many times himself. He's a TOPGUN grad.
What else... Our Director of Flight Test, Mick Mansfield, talks about the accuracy of the flight deck scenes out at sea as well as whether pilots really have big egos.

This movie got the Chinese military so nervous they actually relocated a photo reconnaissance satellite over the area where the Darkstar full size mock-up was parked during the filming of top gun Maverick., because they thought it was real... It looked that good

While a cool story, I doubt that its true. Satellites aren't like drones or aircraft that you can just maneauvre around, they fly in orbit around the Earth, and it takes a considerable amount of fuel to change that orbit. It's a lot cheaper and simpler to just send a guy out in the field.

@@daveberndt3197 I'm well aware. That doesnt change my point though. You cant just move a geostationary satellite around wherever you want, they have pre-determined geostationary orbital slots. Besides, like I already said, it takes a lot of fuel to change an orbit.

Jim Powell speaking. Fellas, I really enjoyed your conversation. I was attached to VF-154 during the Vietnam war. Did two cruises in the South China Sea. Very familiar with the flight deck scenes. From the time I was in til present day, those operations seem very much the same. Watching our F4 phantoms leave the flight deck bearing the weapons of war was exhilarating. Always very happy when all the pilots returned. I have the utmost respect for both of you and for any aviator who flies off the deck of an aircraft carrier. Go Navy!!!

From Wiki: The aircraft under development is planned to fly at Mach 5 with a range of 4,600 miles (7,400 km). The company claims to have designed, built, and successfully tested a Mach 5 engine prototype in the span of 9 months. In August 2020, Hermeus received a $1.5 million contract from the United States Air Force to develop their proposed aircraft to enter and serve the American presidential fleet in the future and function as a possible Air Force One.

From the perspective of a Marine grunt deployed with amphibious HST cert., the pedigree of the Marines as a component of the Navy is fully manifest on a flight deck, whether that's on a helo lander or a big boat. It's the seamless integration of the Marine plane captains into the deck activity with there utility bottoms and bloused combat boots operating alongside the tan and blues, and Marine helmet covered head gear. The deck ops openings are my favorite where I get the biggest rush. Especially considering the noise and frenetic conditions they need to work under 24/7

Honestly, I think REAL callsigns are better than Top Gun call signs. Calling someone with the last name Fields "Sally" is just right. Reminds me of me and my army buddies in Greece. We may not have been pilots, but we got our names based on something semi embarrassing or fitting of our names, not something "Cool". We had one friend's last name was "Venturie" so we called Ace. My other mate was Zappatidis, who moonlight as a DJ, so we called him "Zapp" or "DJ Zapp" Mine, was given as a joke cause my last name is a type of bird and I was a cook, so Ace who was a bit of a Peter Sellers fan would call me "Birdy Num Num" or just "Birdy". They can keep it cool by going into thinner atmosphere. Going up and down would be slower. Turning is going to be the main problem for two reasons. One is the thinner atmosphere makes it hard to drag one side. The second problem is the aircraft is flying so fast that a tight U-Turn would require a 100 mile or more grid. Mach 10 is 2.06 miles per second. This was seen with the Russian SAMs against the SR-71. The SAMs were faster, but because of the small fins, they couldn't turn in the thin atmosphere and would just fly straight up.

Not much there. When he says Rxxxx (blue border with blue tick marks) he is talking about Restricted Airspace which are defined on sectional charts. Restricted are military hot always and no civilians are allowed in unless you are under an instrument flight plan and get a specific clearance to do so...MOAs are often cold and civilian VFR flights can fly into and out of them routinely even without permission.
@GiovanniV69
@GiovanniV69 2 года назад
There are some Restricted areas that go "cold" or "closed" and can be flown through by anyone. To check the status of a Restricted area, check the side legend of the Sectional chart for the altitude of the Restricted area, the Time of Use, the controlling agency, and sometimes it includes a frequency. Usually the controlling agency the Center in that area. Example: On the Albuquerque sectional, Restricted area R-5105 is from the surface up to 10,000ft, in use or "hot" 0800-2400 local time, and Albuquerque Center is the controlling agency.
@speedomars

I love watching there interviews, but you know that they cant tell you everything. They dont know if somebody has been Mach 10 yet ? 😅 SR - 71 flew 3,529.56 km/h in 1976. Pilots and engineers of SR- 71 said that it was not fastest or the highest top secret project at the time. And SR - 71 was black project. What most of the people call " Aurora" plane was developed in 70s - 80s. It flew mach 7,453 (9130 km/h) in 1986. So with technology and materials that are available now in 2022, I have no doubt there are planes that can do mach 13+ maybe even more. Not mentioning actual black projects that are not using conventional pulsing engines.

Aurora was never proven to exist and only very circumstantial evidence exists to this day --- the sonic booms recorded in 1991 estimated some kind of aircraft was flying at Mach 5.2, which is only 4000 MPH and not 7453 like you falsely claimed

@@fredwerza3478 You are right mate. Aurora was not yet officialy proven. But tell me -which black project was proven to exist before actual disclosure ? They are not that dumb to do black project flights over civilian areas.(altrought they did in 1952, but that is different story). In my coment i sayd "mach 7,453 (9130 km/h) " Mach DOES NOT mean MPH. Mach means - the ratio of the speed of a body to the speed of sound in the surrounding medium. So mach 7,453 is 5673.119 MPH.

Fighter Weapons School is no longer at Miramar. Neither is it at North Island, nor anywhere near San Diego. Maverick is STILL a great, non-woke movie that is crushing it at the box office.

It is in NAS Lemoore. Miramar is where I was stationed in the mid to late 60’s. Miramar was known as Fighter Town USA, until 1969 when Top gun was started.

Only 23 years and you look like hell. I’ve been in my career for 20 years and am barely worse for wear, but I work behind a computer console. I suppose mach 5 can put the years on a man. Maybe I fall apart over the next 3 years lol
