+1, long time everyone was making 8-18min, now its extending again to TOO LONG materials, lol.. better 2 videos in good quality and length than one too long and booring :p
I think episodes should be as long as you want them to be! I found this episode to be fascinating, and enjoyed it regardless of the length! I thought you had storage solved with your previous system already - it's crazy just how much better things can get when you keep thinking about it! I'm glad you enjoyed coming up with the redstone, and I can't wait to see what comes of this!
totally agree, and just to add on to the bit about showing us random things to fill time: if you're excited about those random things and want to show them to us, i'm all for it, just don't feel the need to pressure yourself into finding more if you're completely satisfied with the stuff you've already shown
Having shulker boxes display their contents like an auto item frame is a great idea for a storage room! Thanks for the shout out, loved the episode format ;-]
Nothing wrong with shorter episodes. It helps get to the point of the episode. NGL the storage system room looks so pretty and honestly would be very fun to play around with
I personally feel like shorter and longer episodes both have their place. Sometimes, its really nice to just have a quick 15 minute video to relax to. Other times, you may be itching to binge watch longer videos just to kill time. I'd say do whatever format you enjoy the most, because regardless we'll enjoy watching it.
Xisuma, I am happy for any content of any length that suits your schedule and well-being. Make the video the correct length for the subject matter. For example, Cleo usually has 15-20 minute video but it is wonderful that they have put a 1:40 video out for blood on the clock tower. we needed to see the game in it's full glory
The length is great! If everything you want to tell is told, it‘s perfectly fine! I like docs 90minutes episodes as well as I like a short one. At least we hear from you on the server!
Episode-length was perfect btw. It felt like you said everything that needed to be said about the subject, without adding time just to add time. At the end of the episode, I was like: "oh, already ended?", because I hadn't looked at the time at all, because you kept me captivated throughout the whole video. So please try this in more videos =)
If the shorter episodes feel a more free flow of the creative juices, I'm all for it. Being able to focus on a subject and let some stuff go to the background (maybe vrief glimpses like in this vid) means you'll have more time for your musical endeavors, which is another bonus to you and to all of us!!
Shorter episodes work really well! Convenient for viewers, less time/pressure/work for you, and it allows for frequent community engagement even if you haven’t amassed 20-30+ minutes of final product. It’s also sometimes nice to have something laser focused. Big builds/collabs like bed wars make sense as much longer episodes if there’s a lot you want to share, and little tidbits like this make sense as much shorter episodes. Length that suits the content is definitely better than content drawn out to or squished into a specific length. I don’t know if the RU-vid algorithm will be punishing for variation, but your active subscribers aren’t relying on it anyway. Thanks for the vid and for being so engaged with your community!
I'm happy with episodes being whatever length you want to best communicate whatever you want to do! (Also I'm going to be very busy quite soon so I'm personally biased towards preferring shorter episodes, lol!)
You popped up in my recommended list. I love watching redstone optimization videos. I’m excited to dig through your whole archive while I wait for your next project!
I'm happy to get an episode/video. The short, sweet, and focused help break up the long, involved, and digressing episodes and vice versa, keeping both fresh!
I feel like we missed out on interactions with the other hermits in this episode. As MC ages, I find that the multiplayer aspect is the part that keeps bringing me back. Sharing your progress and builds with others makes the game more fun than it otherwise ever could be. This specific but if progress with a mod didn’t exactly lend itself to sharing, as the others can’t see your resource pack, but perhaps you could have used that to perform a bit of magical voodoo by telling hermits what is in their shoulder box, like you did with Ren in the short.
I think the icons on the shukerbox are large enough to split it into 2 or 4 most common items in the box for it to be more usable and intricate (like the storage drawer mod but bigger icons and no borders for max size).
I loved how you made a video more contained to one idea. At the end of the video it was really relieving only being focused on one thing. I could clearly remember it all, and it was a nice feeling that none of my time felt drawn out or wasted.
Honestly I really like the episode length - or rather not that it's shorter but that it's focussing only on what you're wanting to share, without you feeling the need to pad out to reach the 20 min mark. 15 mins here was great because it was exactly what you wanted to share & was a little more focussed
I really like the concept of episodes with ONE focus VS a specific time limit achieved because if I want to go back and reference one of your videos to build, say, this storage system or listen to you explain it, I can easily find the video instead of trying to remember which episode you touched on it within other content (scrolling through the video time // trying to find the time stamp // etc)
I like your new concept of making each episode as long as the job you're doing. Every episode doesn't have to be cram packed with excitement, chaos and 10 different things going on. Take it easy. Whatever makes you happy will reflect on your work and make your fans/audience happy in turn.
I dont mind a short episode particularly when its about such a specific niche topic...it sort of an expanded view of a snip from a normal episode. Also love the aesthetic of the peek wall. I think a similar addition would do wonders for chests too
I like the short episodes because I am a Mom with limited time. But, I also enjoy the general silliness that occurs when hermits get together. 😊 have fun.
X, the way you have been following your nose with projects and doing whatever it is you feel like doing is exactly what has made this season so fun to watch. So shorter videos are fine. Trust your gut because it seems to lead to entertaining things :)
Hi X! I really liked how you tackled the storage "issue" to think of an even better solution. And i love that solution! That sorting system looks amazing! Thanks for all your work!
I like the shorter episodes focused on one thing, but I also like the footage of collecting diamonds in the shopping district and just generaly of the shopping area / mini games the other hermits have made stuff.
I like the episode length, it's nice to have the focus on one thing instead of always switching around between a bunch of different topics. Those are totally fun too, but when so many creators do it, this feels like a breath of fresh air. It's one of those things I always appreciated about TFC's episodes.
This reminds me of the systems in the storage-tech discord, and inspires me to put together my own system instead of just taking a pre-assembled system. Thank you for your inspiration, Xisuma!
It's your channel, X! Make it as long as you like. I will say I had 15 minutes before work today and I picked your video because it perfectly fit the gap ;) Love that sorting system, and I also greatly enjoy the insight into plans for future seasons of Hermitcraft. The plans now must save so much time and keep things organized for later!
Shorter is good for when you wanna focus on something, as opposed longer when you might have had a few little bits here and there that don't work as a short episode by themselves but would be longer together (E.g. hermit interactions, etc.) Though really: As long as you want them to be is the real answer!
Also, the important thing is that you don't burn yourself out with perpetually rising self-expectations, X. Being a content creator isn't just the 'what you do', it's the extensive video editing too. Considering the "playing Minecraft and talking over it" part is when you're having the most fun. Serious suggestion: consider hiring a video editor so you can focus on the enjoyable part of your job and not the considerably more arduous one. Burnout (and imposter syndrome) is the ultimate enemy of the content creator, so whatever effectively manages it is both a good investment and a good personal decision.
going back through these older eps looking for the underlying philosophy behind the mass storage system as it relates to the ender chest storage scheme. really interested in seeing how you've refined this for HCX. I'm becoming more interested in the difference in philosophies between you and Etho on this. His 'endless storage system' plan to auto prepare shulkers for his system vs presenting materials to a temporary storage wall for manual filling that I think is implied here (using the grey shulker wall to hold things being refilled for the enderchest, afaict).
I think a shorter episode which focuses purely on the title is perfectly fine. That being said, don't be scared to put in random things, especially if something cool happened. The whole 'hermitcraft members work with each other' is always a fun dynamic to watch, so be careful not to fall into the 'this is not precise enough' pitfall. Otherwise, loved the video!
Those Shulker Box Icons would be SO helpful. I've already started using the resource pack but am finding Peek to be a bit annoying to use due to the blocks/items sticking out being so big. Also, I enjoyed the shorter video, felt like a good breath of fresh air.
Really enjoyed the shorter, more focused episode. It lets you really hone in on one topic instead of jumping around to multiple different things on the server.
Back in like 2011/12, the conventional wisdom was that viewer retention didn’t last on videos greater than 24 minute videos. I remember Kurtjmac talking about it one time, because that didn’t track with him, his best performing video was hours of flying a plane to the North Pole in Kerbal Space Program.
I’d say you should have a combo of short and longer episodes. I personally love the long episodes like the goats episodes yet short episodes are sweet and to the point.
Usually the best way to determine size and length of media is to make it however long or short you feel it should be to convey what you want it to, rather than stress about some arbitrary limit, minimum or maximum. Because when you enjoy it, it shows.
i love the redstone side of things and love that youre open with modifying the game client side as then the others can keep vanilla and for episode length you do you most of your fan base would watch you for hours with no issue
I definitely love the quality of videos where the content creator isn't forced to align with a time frame because it gives the content creator a better creative mindset where they don't feel like they have to meet a video criteria, but focus more on the raw will of their mind. I used to think I was indulging on nestolgia by preferring older minecraft let's plays but now I realize is back then youtube didn't require a video to be a certain length and content creators didn't care much about a certain video length or schedule. Idk I'm not saying that your current method is bad but just consider the benefits of having your mind work on its own free will rather than being forced into a schedule or criteria
The obvious answer to the log/bark block problem is to use the top texture for the log. You could make a system that sorts out raw metal and food into blast furnaces and smokers respectively with the overflow going into regular furnaces, this'll make your auto smelter more efficient. Of course since you have farms for copper, gold, and iron you probably don't need the blast furnace section unless you want to smelt armor and tools which would need an allay sorter.
In a future season it could be interesting to make a shop that is just a shulker organiser. For hermits that haven't put all of this thought into item sorting. Like, they take their shulker monster, put it into the shop along with a few diamonds and then come back later and are given their shulkers back but sorted.
That texture pack looks very cool! If I may suggest an improvement: i would add a white stroke (outline) around the item on the shulker box, this way no matter what the contrast difference between the color of the item and the color of the box, the item would still be easily identified (it is a bit difficult for stone on grey shulker for example). Now the color of that stroke should probably be selected using the complementary color for each of the shulkerbox color.
First, X, really love the thumbnail on this video. I also don't mind the episode length being shorter at all. Also, again, something I wish was possible in vanilla. It would be so easy to add a few extra "functional" slots to shulkers. - One that makes an item render on the top. - One that binds it to a loadstone compass, so you can find it if you lose it - One for some sort of enchantment system that helps address the inventory issues.
I’ve been using the shulker labels a lot along with some vanilla+ mods/tweaks like carpet’s stackable empty shulkers, Peek sounds absolutely amazing to take that to a new level! For the bulk system, I prefer using accessible box loaders, maybe something to consider, but most of all keep up doing you X!
Variety is the spice of life, differnt length episodes depending on requirements is obv gonna happen, ive been researching a load of options for stoorage tho and its helpfull that your stoorage videos are focused and may therefore be shorter or longer depending on the depths it goes into. It seems balanced to me, and ill match an episode to my attention span if im feeling flakey!
Love to see X dropping a HC episode, regardless of if it's the normal 20 mins or whatever, all good with me, whatever works for you!! Such a cool system, you and the guys on the resource pack side have done an awesome job!!
Whatever makes you the least stressed when making episodes works best for me. Personally i do like long form videos that are of a chill and fun nature though, but i can watch Doc for that. XD
I enjoy shorter episodes. Note, when you're using Peek, make sure that coordinates are OFF for lodestone compasses - you don't want to cheat in Decked Out.
This is actually the exact same storage i built with maizuma’s multi storage linked into it. Works like a dream btw bulk storage for what i get a lot of and then multi item storage for the rest
Thank you for your work on the matter, I really hope this helps inspire enough people that developers will address this pressing issue. As even as a semi casual player I still run into and am bogged down with organization issues
Shorter episodes can be better than longer ones depending on what you want to accomplish. I believe that either is fine, shorter ones allow us to watch them in one sitting when we have a short break throughout the day.
I like the shorter tight episodes. Cub does a similar thing, where an episode will just be about 1 task that he is doing rather than waiting to produce a whole narrative per episode. This means depending on what he's up to he might have up to 3 episodes in a week sometimes.
It's pained me for years that vanilla minecraft doesn't show what the most popular item in a storage block is, to the point that I can't play without mods any more. I'm hoping for a future update to be called, 'The Storage Update' that addresses this, improves the inventory system too, if not capacity, then at least QoL tweaks such as inventory sorting and click dragging items between invetory and storage.
A little correction, if a shulker lands on a hopper it will not pick it up because hoppers with containers on them don't interact with item entities. That's why we put composters on our hopper lines
I think episodes should be as long as is needed to convey what you want them to. Keeping it shorter, rather than trying to get some ,,filler'' footage in to reach a certain length is preferable, but if you need an hour to get your message across, go ahead and take an hour. We'll still watch. I really enjoy your content, as it's a good mix of redstone, technical things and building, as well as hermit interactions and shenanigans. I also appreciate you taking us through your creative process and explaining what you do and why. You may not be as good a builder as Scar or as good at redstone as Doc (don't take this as an insult, please, you're still amazing at both), but it's your versatility and the way you talk to your audience that makes you my favourite hermit. Just keep being you and we'll be here, watching every video. PS: Your album is amazing.
You could accomplish the same thing without all the extra network traffic. When a shalker is closed, pick the appropriate item and put that in the database on the level of the shalker. That way you don't have to constantly send the content. For lag reasons I'd also not update it when interacting with a hopper. Maybe first item in and last item out depending on how the hooks affect performance.
Actually, I find videos packed with various bits and stuff quite chaotic, so it's a nice touch to see one that focuses on one single thing rather than trying to pack too many informations into one 20minute long video. I would definitely stick to this format. For shops stocking stuff, I would use streams.
episodes should take as long as they take lol i enjoyed this episode just as much as i enjoy doc's 1hour+ videos lol its about the content within the video itself that matters.
5:20 perhaps a mod that you can toggle with a button that will show that shulkerbox with all 27 slots just by looking at it (creative distance max), you are always standing next to it and then need to open it so see it, so likewise in the inventory you need a mod when hovering, why not in the world when looking at it like coords, toggleable so you dont have to get it every time you look at one.
To be completely honest, most of us are probably pretty busy right now in general. It’s Labor Day for me, so, while I did have homework, I still had a slightly easier day today. But, in general, I definitely have a lot less time due to college (I just started sophomore year) so not having to catch up with 40 minute HermitCraft episodes on top of that will definitely help.
Hey X, great episode. I like watching you geek out about a project like you storage system. Im also all about organization so quite enjoyed this video! About the length of the video. I think it suits your channel and you as well to just focus on the important project of the video. With the longer videos i sometimes felt like you forced yourself to film something just to make the video longer. Saying that, I do like it when you sometimes integrate you little miniprojects in the video like talking about the things you did on stream like building the camel jump. Nice job, X!
A very genius idea, Xisuma! Just one slight thing, the skulker box with Tuff in it is a bit colored to where you can barely see the name. 7:07. And as for episode length, I don’t really care, I just enjoy watching HermitCraft episodes.
I think consistent episode length is sorta important, but I also think any variance from 15-30 min can basically be considered the same length. 10 minutes and 45 minutes definitely feel far different, but comparing 15 min to 25 min they have roughly the same feel.
I enjoy Hermitcraft… any and all content from all of you-15 min to Doc-length. Gem’s 5 hour one was my limit though. I may pop that one on when I can sleep at night ;)
One suggestion is to have the armor stands be in the four corner blocks of a 3x3 section of floor (not sure if it's possible due to compactness of design). If you can , then have the 4 armor stands have their hands up to a shulker box floating down from above. Could be a great focal point with the right lighting. As far as epsode length goes it really all depends on what the episode is about If the video is entertaining no one really minds on it's length. An entertaining short video can just make waiting for the next video that much harder while an entertainning or even information longer video can be a great diversion during a day/night.
Episodes should be as long as they need to be and include what you want to include. I really like this one because you came in with a plan, executed the plan, followed through and finished your idea.
3:03 - Seems useful but I don't really like the look of it personally. I think what I'd really like is just more options for decorating (and visually distinguishing) shulker boxes: Show the box's name when I'm looking at it. Let me color the two halves of the shulker box separately. Let me use a wider palette of colors, like with leather armor. Let me use smithing templates (without consuming the template?) on shulker boxes to add a second color and a pattern. Those kinds of options would give me plenty of options for distinguishing between different shulker boxes that would otherwise be indistinguishable. Instead of having a white box and wondering whether it's iron or quartz or diorite or bone, or a red box and wondering whether it's redstone or nether wart or granite or TNT.
Personally a good amount of hermitcraft is about the community aspect for me. I enjoyed this episode, but I wouldn’t mind also seeing the day to day grind of being in a group server.
The shorter episodes are easier to watch more casually and I think that is a pretty good way to introduce new people to hermitcraft without them having to watch a longer video
As long as you are having fun and not forcing yourself to do something it should be a good video regardless of length. Though I am not a big fan of stuff shorter than 10min
I wish Mojang would bring features like this to the vanilla game. I know "simplicity" is an appeal to a lot of people, but I think it gets used as a thought terminating exercise too often. Nothing is stopping players from keeping the game simple by just not partaking in certain systems... but stuff like this is REALLY helpful to players willing to set it up.
