If you play M2TW: Kingdoms Americas Campaign as New Spain and have Hernan Cortes fight in every chance in every single turn, his title would change from "Hernan The Conquistador" (start) to its final title "Hernan The Mauler" or Hernan The Lord of Terror"

Is Montezuma really speaking Spanish on his first meeting with Cortez?
@Lily1127channel
@Lily1127channel 7 лет назад
Almost everyone in the series speaks Spanish, also the French in the French court, Henry VIII in England, everyone. Because it is a Spanish TV series. It's so that it can be easily watched. That is also the case with English speaking 'Vikings' or 'Versailles' TV series, by the way.
@lukatrkanjec899
@lukatrkanjec899 7 лет назад
Yeah, but European rulers of that time probably knew Spanish, or in any case they were educated polyglots, capable of communicating between themselves (Charles V and Francis I both spoke French as their mother tongue). Or it's assumed that Spanish represents French or German or Italian or whatever when it's spoken internally between French or German or Italian characters in the show. Or whatever! But this is a very strange scene, where Cortez supposedly meets Montezuma for the first time (and he didn't meet him in his palace, AFAIK, Montezuma went out to greet him on the road to Tenochtitlan), and Montezuma is perfectly capable of understanding him and replying him back in the same language.
@Lily1127channel
@Lily1127channel 7 лет назад
In the first meetings of Spaniards and Native Americans in the series there were a translator, a Spanish priest who had lived there for many years, but then they didn't bother with it. Or it's just suggested that Cortés already learnt Moctezuma's language by the time they first met so they spoke the same language. In these times, European rulers didn't know Spanish, what they usually knew was French and/or Latin. (Even Charles V himself didn't speak Spanish when he went to Spain to become king, it took years there for him to learn it.) What I wanted it say is that when the French king speaks to his mother or to Henry VIII they speak in Spanish in the series and that is definitely incorrect too because they spoke in French. But this inaccuracy is very common in TV shows like this, in the 'Vikings' it is also similar when the Vikings (who speak English in the series) first meet the English and there is a translator in the first 1 or 2 scenes and then the Vikings magicly learn English. And there are other examples from other TV shows, of course.
@lukatrkanjec899
@lukatrkanjec899 7 лет назад
Yes, I do understand that most series will have all the characters speaking in the native language of series production. And that adding additional languages is costly for the series' budget. And that therefore it is often assumed that a single language (of the series) stands for many languages in real life. For instance, since you mention the Vikings, in the movie 13th warrior, as the Arabian character of Antoni Banderas learns viking language early on, they all magically start speaking in english (which then represents both arabic and norse). But all that being said, they could have simply skipped this scene or made it different (with Montezuma not speaking at all, it could made his character appear even more dignified). Or having La Malinche translate for him (that's why Cortzez had her in her retinue in the first place). Or anything! This way it simply looks like bad or lazy writing, especially for such momentuos scene. Don't get me wrong, this is a great series overall (much better than Vikings, IMHO), but this entire part with Cortez and the conquest of Mexico is a bit... meh.
@Lily1127channel
@Lily1127channel 7 лет назад
Yes, since it's Emperor Charles's series, the supporting character of Cortés and the scenes in America are of less importance and so a bit rushed. I didn't even get it why the series included Cortés so much. Ok, he was an important conquistador of Charles, but so was Pizarro who barely appeared.

That's stupid, what happened was that the multiple warriors from other city-states who allied with Hernan (who were more than 300,000) wanted revenge for all the horrendous atrocities that the Aztec Empire had committed (the most prominent being the massive human sacrifices ), then they razed the city massacring the population, taking them as captives to be able to sacrifice them, enslaving them, etc ... In fact, Cortès told his allies not to overdo it so much, but his words fell on deaf ears and there was nothing to say. this he could do because his allies overwhelmingly outnumbered him.

I wouldn't rush to such an all-around judgement though. There were horrific people among the Spanish and among the Aztecs, too, surely, but not all of them in general. But what the conquistadors and their men did to the Natives was very close to horrific, in my opinion.

Complete mischaracterisation of the hero and the antagonist. If you read the book Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, you will be convinced that the roles were exactly reversed. The natives were the noble, wise and forbearing people while the colonisers were the arrogant and puffed up narcissists.
@Lily1127channel
@Lily1127channel Год назад
Bury My Heart at wounded knee is not exactly the best source here because it is the story of North America's colonization which happened between Britain, later USA, and the Natives. The Spanish colonization in Central and South America, seen here in this video, was different in many ways. (Eg. compare the native/mestizo population of North America and Latin America). Of course the Spanish colonization was bad and cruel too in many ways. It was different from the north also because the native nations there were very different, there were a lot of very developed empires there, like the Aztec and the Inca. America is a vast land that had many native nations, one in the north was as different from one in Mexico as, let's say, Russia is from France. Same continent, different people. In this tv show, Hernán Cortés is not noble at all, he is evil and he is an antagonist. The last Aztec emperor Cuautemoc is a real warrior and hero. I don't know how this clip can give a different impression, but in the whole tv show it is so.
@saifali
@saifali Год назад
Mexican "empires" share a lot with the Native American counterparts. They were people of God, tradition and community (as opposed to techno-enabled occupiers and thugs). Bury My Heart bears relevance because it is a rare work in which the actual words of the native American chiefs are used as opposed to interpretations by later scholars (usually of European descent). If you hear their words, it is in the words that their nobility comes through. They use gentle speech, metaphors, poetic language ... their linguistic superiority speaks of the superiority of their character and culture. And if you look at the way words have been apportioned in this clip, it is Hernan Cortez who uses long speeches, poetic flourishes. His expression changes many times and he appears persuasive and "right" while the Mexican chiefs speak in short sentences ("Why do you come here?") and maintain the same expression that shows fear, insecurity and frankly, idiocy. They are stiff, rigid. All of this is mere imagination. Bury My Heart tells you that they were extremely eloquent people who had deep understanding of monotheism and a higher purpose .... so deep in fact, that they were worth of being the spiritual teachers of their European counterparts. And in this scene again, we are shown the opposite. In no way does this scene communicate the reality that they so called "spirituality" of the colonizers was just greed in disguise.
@Lily1127channel
@Lily1127channel Год назад
@@saifali The Aztecs had a totally different language (nahuatl) to that of the chieftains of Bury my heart, they were different in many things. They had different beliefs, different values, different religion, different culture. Even Maya and Aztec cultures were very different, even though they geographically lived close, so those that lived thousands of miles away (and 300 years later!) were even more different. Similar in some things, too, of course. Bury my heart is a good source in terms of judging those particular native cultures that Bury my heart is about, not others that lived thousands of miles from there. Again, the Spanish colonization was very bad too, I am just saying that Bury my heart bears little significance when we are talking about the clash between the Aztec and the Spanish empires. Also, British oppression of the North American natives and Spanish oppression of the Central and South American ones should not be treated as one, or mixed, or confused, because they were different things. Different in time, location, the people involved, and the ways in which they happened. The series as a whole depicts the greed of Cortes and the Spanish very clearly. Eg. in this scene it is said out loud by Cortes himself: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AZ_n7ACdusI.html

India never turned into an Anglo-Saxon country, and the same with various African countries which the British ruled.. What about this?

@@positivelife7633 Our culture changed, they destroyed the education system that laid importance for spiritual upbringing. But, they also brought ideas like democracy and human and women rights, I guess there are two sides of same coin.

@@Lily1127channel Its a show but it's pretty dumb. From what I knwo from writings of those days Montezuma belived the spanish were GODS and so he treated them very well in the beginning, not like this. And Cortez exploited the intial Atzec attitude to get gifts and infiltrate in the city

@@freedomordeath89 But that's exactly what happens in this show 🤷‍♀️ Which is obviously much more than in this clip. Did you see it all? Moctezuma believes they are the bearded gods who were prophecized to come from west, and he treats them indeed well in the show. And that's exactly what Cortes does in the show, exploiting their good faith to infiltrate the city. So what is dumb here?
