I took the new Hero 9 Black and the Sealife Micro 3.0 out for some test shots on a recent dive. The footage and stills were shot in the waters of Lake Huron, near Drummond Island, Michigan. I tried to be as fair as possible during the shooting of this video.
For those interested, the 3 masted schooner filmed in this video sank back in 1893. For more information check out this link: www.visitdrumm...

Which camera did better? Please leave a comment.

I use an older GoPro and my Olympus for underwater. I do use filters on the GoPro, and my Olympus has an underwater mode. The Sealife is closer to the results I get with Olympus, and I prefer it. If I could have a choice to do it again, I would have bought the Sealife even though I like my Olympus.

Props for going the extra mile and showing both side by side. I have an old SeaLife DC1400 and am wanting to upgrade. I was thinking the Hero Black, but after seeing your comparison I’m going to go with the Micro 3.0. I was recently on a Caribbean dive and one of the divers had one and showed me its features. Even though it doesn’t have built-in image stabilization, I use my computer editing software for that, as I tend to go the full route and add music, intermittent scenes, etc. The downside of the GoPro is the filtering, which the SeaLife does an excellent job of. I still may get the GoPro for skiing however. Thanks.

Great video thanks. During video the go pro appeared to be much sharper than the SLM3.0 but at the end of your video the stills appear to tell the opposite story....tough comparison.

Sealife all the way for me. Large piano keys make it easy for use with thick cold water gloves.

It is super handy for that. It's also very compact and the battery lasts forever. I found it really useful on my last dive trip to Mexico.

So it seems that the Sealife has a more of a gradable image with a better dynamic range. I know GoPro has Protune. However side by side, I think a little grading would make a better image.

I love how you did side by side comparison! After watching it I’m leaning towards the SeaLife but reading the comments about stabilization is making me waver😟

Yep, the stabilization is pretty bad on the Sealife. The quality is slightly better, but the stabilization is almost a deal breaker.

Great video! I know I'm several years behind, but what would you say of both cameras today?

I'd pick the GoPro overall.

The Sealife camera works much better in the brighter lit, Caribbean Sea.

I think the GoPro footage looks better and sharper I recently purchased the SeaLife micro 3.0 and did the same test as you did I had the same results I was disappointed with the SeaLife

I can't argue with that. For what you pay, I expected more.

Is there a way to adjust the lens settings so it isn’t zoomed in so much or filmed/photographed in wide angle format?
@daddyrabbit835
@daddyrabbit835 Год назад
No, unfortunately, there isn't. It's a fixed lens.

Great comparison video I been waiting for one like this for months thank you I bought the GoPro 8 over sealife 3.0 because at the time was the price and the GoPro stabilisation also it’s more user friendly out of the water when filming. On my GoPro I use filters as I dive in green sea lochs in Scotland. But before covid I purchased a dive light and that made a huge difference. ( one dive ) So no need to worry about green /blue water . Downside of GoPro as I dive in cold water/drysuit pressing buttons can be difficult at times . I like the size of the sealife and you can change setting s on the sealife underwater but I am not convinced that the sealife is better then GoPro? My dive buddy has one so when I am allowed to go back diving I will see how it works . Cheers 🤿

Thanks for watching my video and the great comment. I like the Hero 9 Black for video because of the stabilization and wide lens. Two areas the Micro 3.0 is lacking. The things I really like about the Micro 3.0 are the battery life, how compact it is, and the ability to adjust settings. I flew down to Mexico in November and I have admit it kicked ass in the clear and brighter Caribbean Sea. It was nice to just stuff in a pocket and pull it out when needed vs my GoPro on a selfie stick hanging off my wrist or BCD, not to mention frequent battery changes. It never fails, once I open my GoPro case I get water inside and I then have fogging issues. I would not buy the Micro 3.0 to replace my GoPro. They are too close in quality and the Micro's price would rule that out. I was going to sell the Micro 3.0 because of the average performance at home where I dive in the Great Lakes of Michigan / Canada but decided to keep it as my travel camera when I dive out of the country. The Micro 3.0 is nice, but not a game-changer. I would not call it an upgrade from a GoPro. If they could make the lens wider and get it to stabilize like a GoPro... that might be a different story. I am thrilled to hear from someone from Scotland. My roots go back to the UK and especially Scotland according to my DNA testing. My grandparent's name is Hamilton.

Good comparison, but sealife video is too shaky. It would have been good to see some footage shot from a static position. Isn’t the charging port a point of possible failure/leaking?
@daddyrabbit835
@daddyrabbit835 2 года назад
The simplicity of the Sealife is the main advantage. I heard it's very good for macro though I didn't feature that. I'm not a fan of macro, so it did not make it into this video. I didn't do any static video unfortunately, though I may try in the future. I imagine it would be better, because honestly, the stabilization is bad. When shooting this I shot in a way I thought most people would use it, either floating over a Caribbean reef or over a shipwreck. The Sealife performance is good in brighter lit areas. I've had no issues with the charging port so far. There is a rubber insert that fits very securely and seals the port.

To truly get the most out of a gopro you need a filter lens cover and a dome. The flat port housings will look weird in the corners and not capture nearly as much as it's capable of. The field of view with the flat port is still much wider than the sealife. The sealife field of view is not that impressive at all.

I have a sealife 2.0 and the it a ok under water camera. I went with a gopro 9 because of the stabilization. I went to Thailand on a dive trip and looked at the footage with the sealife and there's no comparison

The gopro stabilization can be a life saver but if you can improve how you hold the camera the sealife takes a lot more usable footage especially if you have access to premier pro. Its not a fair comparison between the gopro 9 and sealife 2.0 as they are different generations. The GoPro 7 is a better comparable to sea life 2.0 when looking at the brands. I believe if underwater photography/videography is what you want to use the camera for than Sealife is the better option.

@@daddyrabbit835 yes, this really needs to be improved, but the sealift camera physics is great. I will buy it in a future release if the in camera software stabilisation is fluid.
