Hero BA captain addresses passengers after emergency landing

The captain, who hasn't been named, stood in the cabin after the drama last night and told shaken people on board: 'I didn't want to put you through this today'. The footage was posted online by model Hofit Golan, once branded Israel's answer to Paris Hilton, who said: 'Our pilot was a hero!' and also filmed herself leaving the Airbus A320 and passing the four fire engines waiting on the runway. The BA plane from Naples to Gatwick landed at 12.34am, forcing the closure of the runway and the diversion of eight other flights. Footage from inside moments after the emergency landing showed passengers were visibly shaken and in tears - but they clapped and cheered as the captain thanked them for staying calm. Speaking on the Tannoy he said: 'I didn't want to put you through this but once again I thank you for all your patience and understanding. We are now safely here'.

For anyone wondering what happened (because for some reason the video description doesn't tell us any details specifically): 0:55 There was a "leak", possibly meaning fumes were leaking into the cabin during the flight. From the description: "Footage from inside moments after the emergency landing" - so the pilot had to make an emergency landing owing to the "Fume event". A fume event is "when oil or hydraulic fluid contaminates the air supply system, you will notice an unpleasant and unusual smell (“fumes”). Oil fumes are often described as smelling like “dirty socks,” or as being musty, moldy, or foul. Hydraulic fluid fumes often have a distinctive acrid odor."

Melt - you should just dissolve and go away - I can think of a whole heap of airlines where the captain would not take time to reassure and explain things to the passengers. It is certainly not "self-(and the word is actually indulgent)-dribble.
