Which I find strange, because the Jean Doumanian-era sketches are supposed to be bad -- and they are, but there were a few (some of them with Eddie Murphy) like this that were somewhat watchable. Or maybe not much has changed between 1980 and 2024.

@canaisyoung3601

Eh, they probably had some good performances, but the writing was bad (plus, I think this was from one of the episodes after Eddie Murphy was hired as a main cast member. The writing did get a little better, but then came Charles Rocket [he's the tall guy in the trenchcoat and driving gloves in this sketch] accidentally saying the f-word and NBC freaking out over it). Plus, Fridays and SCTV pushed the envelope more. Fun fact: the woman in the black fur coat is Gail Matthius. The same one who did voicework in kids' cartoons back in the 1990s.

Well, Denny Dillon and Gail Matthius (the woman paired with Charles Rocket in the sketch. The other woman in the sketch is Anne Risley) stayed around for the last episode of this season before they got replaced with Robin Duke and Christine Ebersole. And I'm amazed people are watching sketches from season six. That was when the show really went to hell (though, considering Eddie Murphy was the bright spot in this dismal season, I guess this season is only tolerable if he's featured).

@@canaisyoung3601 Since it's been so long, Season 6 seems to be this cult classic of sorts. It isn't good, but you want to see what happened after the original cast left. There was definitely some talent there, maybe not geared toward comedy, though.

Robert was no slouch in the sketch comedy department, tho. I read that the actual guy they hired for the 1980 season to replace Garrett Morris was named Charlie Barnett. It was probably posted because it was- by dreary season 6 standards- one of their better sketches. At that point Murphy was just a bit player struggling for whatever screen time he could get. Murphy didn’t really get to cut loose until after the producer and the entire 80-81 cast was fired. After that, He and Piscapo became the show’s top dogs, and brought it back from the brink.
