Herons are elegant wading birds belonging to the family Ardeidae, found in diverse habitats around the globe, including wetlands, rivers, lakes, and coastal regions. There are approximately 64 recognized species, with the Great Blue Heron, Grey Heron, and Black-crowned Night Heron being among the most prominent.
These birds are noted for their long legs, elongated necks, and sharp, pointed bills, which they use effectively to catch fish, amphibians, and insects. Their necks form an S-shape, an adaptation that enables them to strike swiftly at their target.
In flight, herons are distinguished by their slow, deliberate wing beats and their unique posture, with their necks retracted and legs extended. They usually nest in colonies called heronries, constructing large nests in trees or reeds. Each breeding season, they lay between 2-6 eggs, which both parents help to incubate and raise.
