On April 26, 2021 I met Woody Williams, Medal of Honor recipient from WWII. I was able to make his portraits, interview him and go to lunch with him at his favorite restaurant, Shonet's Country Cafe, riding in his Medal of Honor-themed Slingshot vehicle. I'll never forget the time I was able to spend with him. I hope you enjoy this video interview.

I’ve seen two interviews of woody. Both times talking about the incident it’s basically there were some pill boxes that needed to be taken out and then goes on to talk about the two marines that died with him that day. I read the moh citation. Over the course of 4 hours he repeatedly assaulted multiple bunkers over wide open sand under cover of three marines and essentially secured that airfield or at least finally made it possible to secure it. It’s such a shame that his generation isn’t around to be an example of what an American really is. They were the hard men that created easy times and I have the upmost respect for what they accomplished and I think we are doing them a disservice by not living up to the example they set

The United States Marines and Navy Corpsmen that fought in the Pacific are the greatest men that ever walked the face of the earth. Peace Woody

Hey! What about all of the Sailors that got them there and those that died fighting out at sea protecting them? It's a team effort.

@@xx-uz2kz I have literally seen a Corpsman cry when he received orders to serve with the Marines. I have yet to hear a Corpsman that was not proud to serve with the Marines. I spent 3 years working with the Marines as an instructor and I enjoyed every minute of it. I'm glad they are on our side.

Every video or the occasional TV interview I have seen of this MARINE always remained the same, a humble HERO who always credited his fellow Marines for him being with us for so long. He represented “the medal” and his fellow MOH men of all wars so good and knew what he represented to the country. Sponsored and build the Gold Star families memorial throughout each state. He is one of millions of that GREAT GENERATION of Americans that put petty issues aside long ago and served there country whether in combat in Europe or the Pacific or “Rosie the Riveter” building our arsenal and sacrificing personal wants and needs to keep the country going toward victory. I salute you Woody, Sir, you had “Balls of Steel” to the very end. Semper Fi and see you on the Streets of Heaven.

Woody and Eugene Sledge. Two Icons. While they are not alone, they serve as examples to us all. If we just listen. Warrior Poets and True Gentleman. Patriots all.

West Virginia is so proud of Woody Williams. He was born and raised in a small town in the hills of West Virginia. Semper Fi from an old Marine Sergeant.

I first met and interviewed Woody in 2001. I sat at his kitchen table and he made me a cup of coffee. Later, he showed me his Medal of Honor and let me hold it in my own hand.

Thank you for your dedication to accomplishing the mission you faced on Iwo Jima. Your actions there along with the efforts of other soldiers, sailors, and Marines all did their part in thwarting world domination and slavery, which would have been the fate of free men if not for the bravery of all who served in the military of the Allied Nations. Thanks to all!

Im a former Marine. My grandson is the Commander of his Marine Corps ROTC program at a high school in Louisville. He carried the MOH flag during a ceremony at a Louisville Redbirds stadium in July. Woodys grandson gave him a Challenge Coin for his participation. I told my grandson that he needs to frame it. i doubth there are many of those around with Woodys name on it.

Was he named after the doctor? Both are Hershels. Although I’m about 28 years his junior, many of the experiences he describes are familiar to me. My parents also owned a dairy farm, albeit in Alabama. We didn’t have a refrigerator until I was 5 years old, and I well remember the icebox. Running boards? Well, of course I remember them 🤠 I didn’t come along until 6 years after the war ended. (They wouldn’t take my dad in the Service. Dairy farming was an Essential Occupation. And, of course, he was 14 years older than you with 6 kids already.) Wishing you all the best, Mr. Williams ❤️ And, thank you.

Why does it matter how tall you are to join the military? If they send you to war to fight the Japanese they are shorter than 5' 6".

Hershel incinerates other people to death and he gets a medal for it, because he killed for the state - if he had have done it on his own, he would have been executed as a serial killer. How strange is humanity. But it certainly shouldn't be honored.

My father was in Texas(USN) when the Japanese bombed Pearl. I am fortunate that he made it through the war. To compare what my father did in the war to a serial killer is utterly pathetic. AOM1 USNR 1940-45.

Silence your ignorance. It's men like this that kept millions more jews getting slaughtered by jaded nazis, millions more Asians slaughtered. Ordinary men put in a tragic, yet extraordinary situation the world has not seen before or since. That's not glorification, that fact. Hush, don't be so jaded to the humanity forced into inhumane conditions. This man deserves your respect. If he,and many others like him, did not do this, you probably wouldn't have any room for an outspoken opinion.
