How hesychasm could have been disputed as late as the 14th century actually baffles me. Like, have literal centuries of wonderworking monastics and ascetics stretching back from at least the 3rd century not made it abundantly obvious that hesychasm was a legitimate way to come to knowledge of God?

It is not. Hesychasm is heresy and is a rip off of yoga and Hindu paganism via breathing techniques and movements. The church fathers and early Christian’s NEVER taught such wrong activities and is why orthodoxy is schism and heresy and you must submit to the Roman bishop in order to not perish in the lake of fire

I don't want to imagine a Christianity which is either devoid of intellectualism or mysticism. It is fine for a certain denomination to stress one over the other as long as it does not do so permanently. I'm personally worried that a long-term institutionalization of mysticism will cause stagnation or technical backwardness within the Eastern Church vis-a-vis the West while the excessive long-term scholasticism of the West will cause a lack of spirituality, cultural degeneracy (but still technological advancement), apostasy etc. It has always struck me that Western governments and systems function excellently while societies there are dysfunctional and degenerate while Eastern societies tend to function with stability but have corrupt and dysfunctional governments. Surely there must be a middle way in between mysticism and intellectualism? And surely it couldn't mean any harm for the West to stress Christian mysticism to treat its current ailments or for the Eastern Church to stress and re-introduce intellectualism in its traditions?
@willhedges6639
@willhedges6639 Месяц назад
There’s a rich intellectual tradition in the East. The West does theology differently as the focus is more on abstract rationality rather than knowledge based in the experience of God.
@williamkennedy2474
@williamkennedy2474 Месяц назад
@@willhedges6639 I totally agree with you, but I think that around the 14th century or earlier there had been a discontinuation in hyperintellectual traditions within the Byzantine Empire and the Middle East which later popped up in Europe during the Renaissance. Perhaps both Eastern Christians and Muslims associated intellectualism with social disorder, warfare, religious schisms etc. which caused them to de-emphasize rationalism or intellectualism in favor of mysticism. This would not have immediate implications or consequences, but the long-term negative consequences of such traditions would only be visible after centuries. I'm also frankly amazed by how violent the European continent has been between the 16th and 19th centuries and the cost of their progress.
@willhedges6639
@willhedges6639 Месяц назад
@@williamkennedy2474 I’m not disagreeing, partly cause I’m just ignorant of the history you’re referring to, but I wonder why you correlated the intellectual traditions in East with social disorder. From my limited understanding of the history of eastern Europe they were subjected for 600 years in Greece, and under significant influence of western progressivism such as the reign of Catherine the 1st and later Marxism in Russia. I’m not saying Eastern thought is flawless but I would argue that Eastern social disorder is more a result of subjugation and the creeping influence of western progressivism.

@williamkennedy2474
@williamkennedy2474 Месяц назад
@@willhedges6639 I was correlating hyperintellectual traditions in both East and West with social disorder, not intellectual traditions per se. As for your last argument, it makes sense to say that influences of Western progressivism have led to a lot of social disorder in Eastern Europe, the Far East, South Asia etc. I think that the main problem was that in many non-Western Christian or Islamic countries there has always been a formal division between secular authority and clerical authority where the government was responsible for keeping order while the clerical establishments were responsible for rendering social services. The problem with ideologies like republicanism or Marxism was that these ideologies were inherently anti-clerical and were of little use in a non-Western country, since non-Western countries often didn't have the efficient social institutions to provide services which were previously rendered by the clergy. This had as a consequence that people from countries in Eastern Europe, Latin America or countries like Iran during the Pahlavi era suffered tremendous income inequality, hunger, disorder, extremely high crime rates etc. The whole of Latin America is a particularly gruesome example.

This sounds very similar to the conflicts the Catholic Church and Islam also faced around similar times. For the Catholic Church the intellectual approuch became more dominant, granting us the basis for modern science. As understanding the world meant you coukd better understand God. The Church then doing a U-turn for a while during the reformation for understandable reasons. For Islam you had abit of mixed approuch it being a highly intellectual approach but entirely focused of studying the Carhan to the exclusion of the world around. Something that brought an end to the Islamic golden age.

Also, why is the Judaism tradition that the Holy Spirit has always been a power or influence that comes from God discarded in the christian theology? ONE doesn’t always mean singular. In Hebrew they have a word ECHAD/ONENESS. The group of elite soldiers in ECHAD. A church in ONE body, this concept had existed in the book of Genesis. From Eve coming from Adam’s Rib. Genesis 2:24 “For a reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, they will become ONE flesh. 2 People in Unity, inseparable, undivided (though divorce came into the world by sin), belonging to one-another.

Lamentations Rabbah 3:60, 9 relates after the Roman emperor Hadrian indiscriminately executed two Jews, the Holy Spirit kept crying out, “You have seen, O LORD, the wrong done to me. Uphold my cause! You have seen the depth of their vengeance, all their plots against me” (Lam. 3:59-60) This provides and example of the Spirit making intercession. 80 According to Leviticus Rabbah 6:1, the Holy Spirit is a defense counsel who speaks to Israel on behalf of the Lord and then speaks to the Lord on behalf of Israel. To Israel the Spirit says, “Do not testify against your neighbor without cause” (Prov. 24:28), and to the Lord the Spirit, “Do not say, ‘I’ll do to him as he has done to me’” (Prov. 24:29). 81 In all these citations, which can be easily multiplied (see, e.g., Genesis Rabbah 84:11; Song of Songs Rabbah 8:16; Lamentations Rabbah 1:48), there can be no question that we are dealing with a “who” and not just with a “what,” with a personal dimension of God and not just with an impersonal power, with God himself and yet with a “separate” entity who can mediate between God and man. 82 And these citations closely parallel some of the New Testament descriptions of the Holy Spirit, although virtually all the Rabbinic texts cited were written many years later. 83” - Brown, Answering Jewish Objections to Jesus, Volume 2, Theological Objections, p. 55-56

It depends on the point of view. Christianity traditionally believes he is God. But there are other groups that believe in Jesus as only the son of God, a human being who was given a special power (the Holy Spirit) to overcome sin, and do all he did. They believe only the Father as God, and Jesus as the King of Israel, the Messiah.

The process by which the hesychasts prayed was condemned for more than believing they could learn about God through more than intellectual study. We in the west have mystical+meditative prayers that bring us connection with God without the prioritization of the intellect (See the hail mary+divine mercy). The condemnation of hesychasm was due to their necessary accommodation of Hindu practice. The position of the body, the emphasis on the navel, and their conjuration of the uncreated light by fasting/body position/breathing is too foreign to traditional thought. No amount of focusing on a part of the body will allow access to any knowledge/revelation from God.

Buddy, there's historically no interaction between hesychasm and buddhism. All that stuff you mentioned is completely optional and often times disregarded even in an entire generation. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hesychasm "This stage is called the guard of the mind. This is a very advanced stage of ascetical and spiritual practice, and attempting to accomplish this prematurely, especially with psychophysical techniques, can cause very serious spiritual and emotional harm to the would-be hesychast. St. Theophan the Recluse once remarked that bodily postures and breathing techniques were virtually forbidden in his youth, since, instead of gaining the Spirit of God, people succeeded only "in ruining their lungs."" "On the actual breathing technique, St Theophan the Recluse wrote that "all the techniques that are written about (sitting, being bent over and so on)... are not for everyone and without the help of a personal teacher can be dangerous. It is better to leave all of this alone. Only one technique is essential - to be attentive in your heart. All the rest is superfluous and adds nothing to the prayer” (O molitve Iisuovoy (On the Jesus Prayer). New York. 1995. Pp. 30-31.)." Most of the ones pushing this idea of "hesychasm being buddhist" are the dimond brothers, a crazy sedevacantist group which takes it's sacraments from greek catholic churches like confession despite their hate of Palamas. Baarlam himself said he will himiliate Palamas only for him to leave Constantinopole after lying that he submitted to the 1351 synod and became a RC bishop. Dude was instated more because of him formerly being eastern orthodox since he often times wrote things that contradicted papal supremacy and was general open about not actually caring too much about dogmas. stephanebigham.com/en/a-bad-theologian-of-unity-in-the-fourteenth-century-barlaam-of-calabria/#sdfootnote13anc

They have a wierd spirituality where they believe that the navel is the seat of the soul where through certain body positions they rest the chin on the chest, focus the gaze on the navel and chanting the Jesus prayer like a mantra they use it to synchronise breathing and by doing they claim to gain access to "the uncreated light". Obviously such practices were never part of Christian monasticism. These things are akin to yoga and sufi practices.
@willhedges6639
@willhedges6639 Месяц назад
“Never part of Christian monasticism” is crazy. Hesychasm is not some weird occult copy of far eastern mysticism. The deseret fathers engaged in similar kinds of prayer in the 4th century. The tradition of prayer on mount Athos is more complex and developed than anywhere on earth. These kinds of bodily affectations incorporated in mysticism don’t work for no reason. Christ as the Logos reveals the true purpose for everything. The Orthodox world view is understood best as “both and.” Everything in existence has its proper logoi which is revealed in Jesus Christ. The Jesus prayer is mysticism in its proper form, while of course incorporating the necessity of maintaining an ascetic life.

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. -Matthew 6:6 (Jesus teaching contemplative prayer) 22The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. 23But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! -Matthew 6:22-23 (Jesus teaching how yo focus the gaze of the inner eye by making it single/directed. Jesus also teaching how to become a light/photeinos) There has to be a way to know God directly through union/communion- this is what Jesus taught. 39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life (John 5:39) Intellectual knowledge of scripture isn't enough to claim that you know God. You must truly worship God, As Jesus said "in spirit and in truth" (John 4:24) You think reading scripture will grant you life? Life comes from life. Spirit from Spirit. The scripture is the guide pointing to these things. If someone held a gun to my head and said that I could only teach 2 teachings then I would teach "single eye gaze" and attend the divine liturgy and partake in the church sacraments.
