Historically speaking, yeah! but when it comes to colonial creation when New Zealand was under British rule, they came after Australia

When it comes to who resided there originally yes BUT we're going by the "independence factor" meaning; if a country was colonized by another it wasn't really it's own country because of assimilation/outside cultural influence THEREFORE because Australia gained independence from Britain first he gets to be part of the "Big Brothers club." It's a similar situation to the North American Brothers; Canada is TECHNICALLY the older brother because the country was first visited by the Vikings but because America gained independence first he's considered to be the older sibling.
