i think seeing the hetalia characters as bi until proven otherwise is just the best way to view the hetalia characters.

I headcanon America as Ace (But bi romantic and very sexpositive) because it seems like if he was given the choice between an attractive woman, an attractive man, an attractive non-binary, and a good cheeseburger he'd choose the cheeseburger 100% of the time, even if he'd just eaten. That seems ace as heck to me. In my eyes, he probably sees romance and women in bikini's as something cool more than something that he's actually physically attracted to. (Although I will admit I'm bias because I'm Ace and he's my favorite character)

"Estonia has big 'I like women but I can't get any' energy." Is that why Himaruya based his appearance off him?

I feel like America and Italy would be different. Italy has a lot of hetero moments. There's this whole scene in the manga where Germany pokes fun at Italy for how Italy likely would have paid for Germany and Japan's meals, if they were women. From the moment the series started, Italy would act like this sniveling coward around men to get out of trouble but then turn around and start flirting with all of the women. While he does show interest in men, I think he has a really strong and obvious preference for women. It is likely why Germany is so perplexed by his behavior. America I see as bi but with a preference for men. There are women in his advertisements and such, but that's marketing. The time's we see him around women, they are approaching him. Not the other way around. The times we do see him being kind of flirty is with other men, specifically Lithuania and Japan. Like seriously, what adult american man would ask another man to bathe with him in a tiny bathtub? They wouldn't. That's some gay energy.

Personally, Germany gives me strong "Gay but in denial" vibes (I mean the whole Buon san Valentino Episode speaks for itself). He has an obvious crush on Italy, but he doesn´t want to admit it. For Italy, I´d say he leans more towards pansexual, but that´s just my guessing. I haven´t rewatched the series in a long time, so I forgot if there are any scenes, where it shows that Italy also has feelings for Germany (I mean, yes, Holy Rome obviously, but specifically Germany). If any of you guys remember, let me know.

Russia is very childish. He’s looking for companionship and belonging. Yes, he wants to be loved, but not necessarily in a sexual or romantic way. I think he’d be oblivious and unaware of such things. Keep in mind he’s very lonely and probably could use a lot of emotional support.

I think its worth noting for major religious country it would be safe to put in straight, otherwise the overly religious part of the fandom is gonna riot. Take Indonesia for example. One of (actually the first) the countries core believes is litterely one true god, or country with a Cristian or muslim Majorities at least.

The only confirmed queer character I know of is Sweden/Finland. Sweden is canonically gay confirmed by Himaruya. But Finland was married to Russia and was the top (canon). So I’d speculate that Finland is also homosexual. So far my only confirmed queer characters.
