In this video we explore the Heterophonic Orchestral Texture.

The Heterophonic texture is when you have the same melody playing in the orchestra at the same time, but in different ways. You can think of it as "simultaneous variations".
Maybe your orchestration has a simple 8th note melody in the woodwinds, and then you have a very active and flowing 16th note variation of that line in the violins. When those lines are playing together to create a very rich and complex sounding melody, that's the Heterophonic texture.
We'll start by talking about what the texture is, take a look at an example from Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony, and then put the theory to use by actually applying the texture to the main theme from Breath of the Wild.

Heterophonic orchestration always reminds me of folk music. You hear that kind of thing in bluegrass or Irish trad where the fiddle and the banjo play the same tune at the same time, but each with its own ornaments and syncopations so there are little rubs wherever the musicians interpret the tune differently.

One of my favorite examples of this is in the love theme from The Godfather. The melody is sometimes doubled by a mandolin playing tremolo... You still get that beautiful tune, but with this wonderful pattering texture behind it.

Following the video about Heterephonic texture from this series with some notes of mine: - Heterophonic is one line but made fuller in texture - Supporting lines can be ornamented or simplified - Makes good use of arpeggios - Heterophonic is usually used in combo with other textures Thanks again for the video. I liked also that the different timbres help to bring this texture on the forefront of the sound on Tchaikovsky 4th Simphony.

Love the flute at measure 6! Its phrases in general are great!

Really nice. I have been doing an online course on orchestration (Secrets of Orchestration) and it is exclusively heterophonic orchestration so this video really helps summarize what I have been studying. Liking all your videos, you are amazing.

I love that course! You are right though, the variety is in the way he creates background parts but not really in the overall texture itself

Another way of listening to Heterophonic Texture is World music - listen to Japnese Gagaku or. Turkish folk music. I love heterophonic textures:-)

Yea they can really add a lot of richness, and I especially like how they help me think more linearly and not just in vertical blocks which can often happen.

@@RyanLeach Indonesian Gamelan can be heterophonic; Chinese traditional music also.

Nice! I've tried recreating Ottoman-inspired music before, but I could never get the music texture quite right, and kinda moved on. Now I know the missing piece.

This isn’t really pertaining to the video but what do you think about Dorico?
@RyanLeach
@RyanLeach 3 года назад
There are so many things about Sibelius that drive me insane, but I'm so familiar with it and for the amount of time I use it (I mostly just work directly in Logic), it just doesn't seem worth $300 to change to something else. But I hear nice things 🤷‍♂️

Another great video! I am curious about something - where did you get the Sibelius score for Tchaik 4? Did you create that or is there some place where you can get scores for studying?
@RyanLeach
@RyanLeach 3 года назад
I input the score into Sibelius myself, but I got the original score for reference at imslp.org/ which is a goldmine if you don't already know about it!

@@RyanLeach Indeed, that site is great! I find myself very interested in MIDI performances of classics with sampled libraries to see how realistic I can make it. Super fun!

i can´t hear the glockenspiel! it's muted?
@RyanLeach
@RyanLeach 3 года назад
Thanks for subscribing! The glockenspiel is a subtle addition, and especially because it's doubling notes in the other parts it can blend in quite a bit. Maybe crank up the volume? It adds a glistening more than anything too substantial.

So as I understood heterophony is kind of a variation of a melody which play simultaneously with the simple melody line. Please confirm if I understood correctly !
@RyanLeach
@RyanLeach 3 года назад
Yea it's usually like that, but you could have two "complex" versions of the melody happening at the same time too without one really being the "simple" one. Having a simple line to make the melody clear is probably a good idea though!
@damoon57
@damoon57 3 года назад
@@RyanLeach as I understood in your video you had one line main melody and you were trying to add ornaments and embellishing the melody in other lines . Correct ?
@RyanLeach
@RyanLeach 3 года назад
Yea in this case I used the main melody that was already written, added an ornamental and embellished flute part around it, and use the glockenspiel to highlight downbeats or important tones.
