Heterosis is an improved or increased function of any biological quality in hybrid offspring. IT is often considered as opposite to the inbreeding depression. There are two hypothesis proposed to explain the concept of heterosis..
1) Dominance Hypothesis
2) Over Dominance Hypothesis
Heterosis - Importance
1) Increased Yield: In terms of Grain, fruit, Seed, leaf, tuber or say Whole Plant.
2) Increase in Size & Vigour: Heterosis results in more vigorous growth which ultimately leads to healthier and faster growing plants.
3) Greater Adaptability in Environment- Hybrids are generally more adapted to environmental changes than inbred lines due to heterozygosity.
4) More Disease Resistant - Heterosis sometimes results into development of more disease resistant character in hybrids.
5) Increased Reproductive Ability - Hybrids exhibit heterosis by expressing high fertility rate or reproductive ability, which is ultimately expressed in yield character.
