howdy. today we're talking about Netflix's long-brewing Chronicles of Narnia series, the news that Greta Gerwig might be involved, and how it could be a massive phenomenon. might be giving into the Marvel cameo impulse a bit too much here, but hey, we have fun i guess. i'd like to see a well-done Narnia animated series even more than this!

hey guys! it's time to talk about Narnia again. if you missed my first video, it was an even more in-depth exploration of how to adapt the Narnia series that you can check out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fNwlshepwqo.html. What's the Narnia book you'd most like to see adapted? how would you bring the series to the screen? There’s a significantly extended version of this video on my Patreon, if you wanna check it out: www.patreon.com/houstonproductions1 timecodes: Greta Gerwig's Narnia - 00:10 which book to start with - 2:00 virtues of the previous Narnia movies - 4:20 The Magician's Nephew - 7:53 The Horse and His Boy - 8:20 The Silver Chair - 9:38 The Last Battle - 11:28 Susan's Story - 13:36 concluding thoughts on adaptations - 16:44

I don't think bringing back some of the actors is even possible because the there's definitely some licencing issues and Disney (who also owns 20th Century Fox) would immediately raise eyebrows if Netflix brings the actors back. It's sad but inevitable.

For a Susan solo story, I would have it follow adult Susan as she is dealing with the loss of her entire family, while simultaneously cutting to memories of her life as an adult during the golden age of Narnia. Slowly she would come to terms with her grief through recalling her life in Narnia. I think that would be cool. Also The Horse and His Boy

im sure quite a few people would be upset with Gerwig if she were to write an original story for Susan, which is really sad - especially considering the quote you read at 15:31. it seems like CS Lewis _encouraged_ others to write this story that he didn't feel equipped to write himself. im sure he would be Happy if Gerwig were to add to his world. also, i think the storyline of Susan's adult life would work well in tandem with what the other rulers were doing. i know time in narnia and time in the real world work different, but it would also be cool to see Susan's standard adult life contrasted with the whimsical world of narnia.

Further up and further in gets me every time. Man. I think Narnia adaptations can often be quite thorny to work, and I absolutely do not trust Netflix with something as complicated as The Last Battle or The Magician's Nephew, but I would love to see a faithful and funny The Horse and his Boy. It's a lovely book, without some of the tricky theological waters of the others, and I would enjoy a well done adaptation

i actually really love the idea of teasing that “The Pevensies” will be back all throughout the franchise and finally bringing all of em together (except susan ofc) on the last battle. It kinda give us a breath of fresh air and at the same time the nostalgic feeling of the older films. Also by doing so, both adaptions by disney and netflix can be apreciated at the same level. Because let’s be real we all are pretty bias with the disney’s one

I'm in the middle of watching right now, but I just had to say that the aesthetic of this video is sooo nice. The intro, your background, what you overlay pictures on, the TV you put videos on (also, as a creator, a very clever way to skirt copyright). It all blends together nicely and gives off such a warm vibe.

The whole point of Susan abandoning Narnia is her wrestling with her faith and adopting more worldly things. That was always my interpretation of it. So by worldy I mean she's having this period in her life where she's not sure or not she truly believes in Narnia whether or not it truly happened and therefore ventures out into the world to continue on her life.

I recently became aware of Neil Gaiman's The Problem of Susan short story which is also in graphic novel form that attempts to tell her side of the story after losing her family in The Last Battle. I'm currently looking out for it as sounds like an intriguing read.

I'm glad you've made a follow-up video on Narnia based on the recent news, I love some of these suggestions! The only thing I would change is to move Silver Chair until after VOTDT, because that way it would be better built up, so we can get a taste of what Netflix brings to the table with TMN and AHAHB, then their own interpretations of TLWW, PC & VOTDT, then wrap it up with SC & TLB, then experiment with some spin-off content after that. I'd really like to do a retrospective series on Narnia sometime on my Alt, we'll see what happens.

So what I think they should do is allow Greta Gerwig to do whatever art she wants with the franchise, and then fill in the blanks with other great filmmakers. If they’re films I hope they get a theatrical release- I hope Netflix don’t force Greta Gerwig to make a mini series or something. And bringing back the original movie actors is a good idea- as long as it’s not really nostalgic and is just a clever, subtle detail.

Honestly, I think Susan losing faith in Narnia is one of the most realistic aspects of the books. Although I do agree that if they keep that part, they should change her motive from make up and stuff to something like the cruelty of the real world or something else we all struggle with as we grow up

I kinda think this new Narnia should be its own thing w/o reference to the past films, although I love the old films dearly. I really think they should adapt The Magicians Nephew. There’s a lot they could with it. Perhaps even in miniseries form. And Dev Patel needs to be cast for one of the films in some role. Would also love to see The Silver Chair as it’s my favorite book.

I loved your ideas for adaptation and order of adaptation for Netflix. I think if Netflix is brilliantly faithful with a Masterful adaptation of TMN then it would buy them license to flesh out other untold stories from Narnian lore. People forget that beyond the seven Chronicles there is also an official timeline of Narnian history, the footnotes of which could be adapted. The could also portray the rise of the White Witch and the war Tumnus's father fought in and the winter with the prophecy... Part one, then part two and three the readaptation of TLWAW The Horse and His Boy, is my favourite book, followed by The Magician's Nephew

I think this is a lovely thought but just practically infeasible. There is absolutely no way netflix will not adapt LtWatW even if at a later point (which I agree is the way to go), and the only sensible way to do that is to recast the four. Also, there's a good chance Greta will want to dive deeper into the Christian elements of the books and possibly deliver a different style to the world (I'd much rather see her own take on the world than see her to prequels/sequels to the old films), so she will want to have a whole new cast to go with that.

Yes, Skandar retired from acting. As much as I would love to see Skandar come back and reprise his role as Edmund, even as a minor role in one episode, I don't know how that would impact his job given him being in politics. Logistics I guess. I think his heart wasn't into acting anymore, so it wouldn't surprise me if he were to reject the offer to return. It would be a treat to see him on the screen again in a new Narnia adaptation :)

I don't normally care for fan-casts and I like fan prospective plots (as distinct from suggested alterations/rewrites to something _after_ it has been created) even less. And I'm not a big fan of the Narnia series; I was too old for the movies when they came out, and too young when I actually read the books to remember them very well. But even despite those caveats, I really enjoyed this video. Yeah some of the ideas are a bit obvious (especially "start with Magician's Nephew"), but a good idea is a good idea, regardless of how obvious it may be. I think it's inevitable that they're going to want to adapt _The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe,_ but it would be really smart of them _not_ to do that right off the bat. Unfortunately that would also make your ideas about reusing the old cast difficult to make work. Which is a shame because I really liked that idea too.

I found The Last Battle and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe the most religious of the series, with The Magician’s Nephew. My take on what happened with Susan in The Last Battle was that she had lost faith, so she was not there for the salvation/ascension to heaven, aka Aslan’s land, like the others were. I think her disinterest in Aslan and Narnia means that she no longer believes in a god. I’m not religious myself, but was raised Catholic, so this was how I interpreted the meaning of her absence in the story. Loved your idea of bringing the original actors back. The only one that wouldn’t work, imo, is Will Poulter. He is a man now but is still supposed to be a child in The Silver Chair. Yes, some time passed, but not that much time. He’s still supposed to be in school and helps Jill get away from bullies.

Actually I've seen the OG BBC TV versions of Narnia and I thought that they actually did a relatively decent job with adapting Prince Caspian. Dare I say it was the best out of the bunch that was given. (Silver Chair sure was interesting. Particularly with Eustace interacting with a Dragon.) They're Movies now? Better just reboot the whole series than. I don't think sticking with what 'people' have seen of the OG Films would work at all. Susan standalone...if C.S Lewis himself put fan-fiction up as an option why not?

In my opinion, I also think they should start the franchise with "The Magician's Nephew" adaptation! And yes!!!! They should bring back Tilda Swinton and Lean Neason for their original roles! But I think they can do an adaptation for "LWW", but they don't finish with the Pevensies going back to our world, I would start "The Horse and his Boy" as soon as the pevensies recive their crowns. (BTW, I can imagine the camera leaving Cair Paravel and going to a river with a baby in a boat and they write on screen "Calormen". After the story of HHB, we could se the pevensies going back to our world and then Prince Caspian begins again... (BTW, I would love to see the original cast cameos) I would adapt the whole series, but also bring back some actors!
@philipb7400
@philipb7400 Год назад
I think a reboot would work better. I do like the idea of doing “The Magicians Nephew” first, and I hope we still see the original cast at the end of LWW as a cameo when their grown-adults, along with Liam Neeson and Tilda Swinton being back in their roles. But a reboot would allow the series to be much more successful which would allow for a higher budget movie series, along with a better adaptation of VDT.

Honestly in a perfect world what I always imagines was a beautiful animated version kind of in the style of something like Ernest and Celestine. You could take a really almost Fantasia approach to several things in the Magicians Nephew that I think would really bring it to life in a way live action never could for me. Same with the Last Battle. Some elements I want to be so fantastically done and overarching in beautiful imagery and music and flowing animation (ie. Wolfwalkers) but I just really love fantasy 2D animation. Honestly some of my favorite books always were the Silver Chair and the Horse and his Boy but both of those feel like crazy stories to adapt to movies. A series might be the best bet...

This is just my personal thought to why Susan did not go back to Narnia as a sick twist to C.S. Lewis iconic classic children’s series. You can take it for whatever reason. The Thing About Susan In C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia, there is a captivating tale about four young siblings-Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy Pevensie-who find themselves magically transported into the enchanting world of Narnia. This extraordinary journey begins in the first book titled "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" and concludes in the seventh book named "The Last Battle," where those who have visited Narnia are rewarded by entering a new Narnia, except for Susan. Despite her being a Queen in that realm, Susan is excluded from this opportunity due to something related to makeup and lipsticks, which prevented her from reentering Narnia. [WARNING: SPOILER ALERT] Here's the astonishing twist: right from the start, all the children, except Susan, had actually died at the beginning of the story. The train crash mentioned in "The Last Battle" did not occur, as Susan was not on the train. Instead, their demise happened in "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe." When they entered the wardrobe as children, they became trapped and tragically suffocated. Before their untimely deaths, they experienced hallucinations and collectively dreamed of a fantastical world called Narnia, inhabited by talking animals and sentient trees. Peter and Susan, being the eldest, tried to comfort their youngest sibling, Lucy, by filling her mind with cherished fairy tales and conjuring other elements of fantasy, all while hoping to be rescued. Sadly, only Susan survived this traumatic event, as her brothers and younger sister passed away. That explains why she couldn't enter the new Narnia. The notion of makeup and lipsticks is significant because Susan grew up, found love, and moved forward in her life. She chose to distance herself from the memories of those tragic events in her childhood, dismissing them as mere childhood make-believe. Hence, she no longer wished to revisit Narnia. Now you understand why Susan was not welcomed back to Narnia.

I really like your “Exploration of Susan” idea! I think Great Gerwig could do a really interesting take on that whole journey. My own personal ideas I’ve thought of over the years since the Netflix deal is to first work on original stories, but in the tone/mood of Narnia as always. Like let’s do a whole backstory on Jadis (white witch) from the beginning, before she made it to Narnia. Also I think the creative developers could really work with the idea of the “Wood Between the Worlds” found in the Magician’s Nephew and run with it! THEN tell some of the book adaptations. Something new, then something classic/timeless. Cheers!

You said Silver Chair has not been adapted, but I have a DVD copy of the BBC Silver Chair on my tv stand. That being said, I like your plan in theory but I do have one... gripe? I guess you could call it. I've watched a few of these "This is what Netflix should do with Narnia" videos and you know the one thing that I see in common? A lack of willingness to let Netflix's adaptation be its own thing, in one way or another. Either Netflix should be hamstrung to the rigid lore of an author well dead, or the theology of an author well dead, or in your case the Disney movies. Personally I don't want to be reminded of the previous movies, and honestly would love to see a more diverse, open Narnia. After all, it's a fantastical world wholly different from our own, so why should it consistantly remind us of things in our world?

That susan solo movie idea is gold

I love the idea of that Susan stand-alone. Maybe it starts with her fully into adulting, and she’s stressed, and her life lacks imagination, and over the course of the movie she remembers how amazing her adventures in Narnia were, with the movie ending on her re-entering Narnia? Not in a cliffhanger way, but as a “look guys, she made it!”.
