Basically Raja's father converted to Christianity from Islam when Raja was 7 or 8 years old. Raja's father was known as Willy Amrull. He is the stepbrother of Hamka, the famous Indonesian Islamic scholar. Both Willy and Hamka were the sons of a Muslim cleric father. Willy Amrull converted to Christianity together with his family circa late 1981 or 1982 after the death of Hamka. So Hamka didn't know about his brother conversion. Willy Amrull spent most of his life outside Indonesia mainly in the US. So the western world influence on him was significant. His wife initially was a christian but converted to Islam in order to marry Willy. When he returned to Indonesia and set up business there, many problems occured. This took heavy toll on him and his wife. His wife apostatized from Islam and revert to Christianity. Seeing his wife seemingly contented in Christianity, Willy started to get involved in Christian related activities out of curiosity at first then he decided to embrace Christanity as well. Afterwards, he and his family migrated to the US in 1984. Later on he became an ordained pastor. He wrote a book about these events and you can read the details there. As a popular phrase in Malaysia says "Iman tidak dapat diwarisi", basically means faith cannot be inherited. I won't say Raja came from a very religious Muslim family. Raja's upbringing was mostly Christian. When his parents were muslim, he was very young and not much islamic knowledge was imparted to him. Their lifestyle was also quite western due to his father's long stay in the West previously.
