I first saw the Lower Swansea Valley in 1954, on my way to the last five Nations rugby international; to be played at St Helen's, Wales v Scotland. An unbelievable apocalyptic landscape on which nothing grew. The reason was that when the copper ore arrived at the works the first process was "roasting." intended to drive off as much sulphur as possible. The sulphur came off as sulphur dioxide which promptly combined with the Welsh weather to return to earth as acid rain. Reclamation work started during my first year at Swansea Uni Metallurgy Dept, 1958, and by the time I left six years later a great deal of hard work had greatly improved the landscape.

Oh dear. I cannot believe the information witth regards the canals. The information of the Swansea canal is fine. The canal you refer to at White Rock is the Smiths canal. This ran from Smith's Pit at Felin Fran via Llansamlet and Upper Bank to Foxhole and White Rock. There were no tunnels in Landore on the Swansea cannal. I played as a child on that cannal in the 50s. This video was put out over twelve months ago so I dread to think how this information has been passed around. I am no expert but I sugest you consult an old Ordnance survey map or the pamphlet issued by Swansea council entitled The Swansea Valley. With respect Graham Sinnett. Wombourne, Staffs.

Graham, I have just seen this, and like you, I was appalled at the inaccuracies in the video. This is a presentation by Swansea University and intended as a teaching aid. It is unbelievable that they could get it so wrong, and not just about Smith's canal. The White Rock Dock was not a part of the ferry. That was further down river, and the approaches could be seen at low tide either side of the river before the barrage was built and river levels were raised. A look at the 25 inch 1878 Ordnance Survey map would clearly shew it all. I hope they have made it clear to their students that they have produced a flawed video.

Loved this - “huge scale Global business” complete with slavery and an abandoned environmental mess - some things never change ?
