I think his exact words were: “Damn. That’s crazy.” I really appreciate the fact that he was taken aback by her experience. He listened, and he was surprised by what he heard her say, and that’s a good thing that he did that I noticed, also.
The husband seems very fun, relaxed and easygoing! He truly radiates confidence, positivity and authenticity, you can tell that guy is a people person! and don't even get me started on his sense of humour!
The actress that played Elizabeth did too good of a job… she perfectly captured that thankful, salt of the earth person who’s too wholesome to even complain when they’re being exploited or abused.
The Safdie brothers are known for using "real people" as actors, she probably was truthfully just uncomfortable acting, which fit the part even better. Because that's what the characters intention is supposed to be; a real person being uncomfortable on camera but trying their best.
TIL that being moved on from another person's property, land that you don't own, and getting handed a bunch of money on the way out that I have no legal right to, it is a gift = 'being abused'
As someone who was evicted yesterday, I can confirm the need for candles and jeans is great. The world would be a better place with more Whitney and Ashleys!
I heard some rumors of AR in another segment on the show, and I was thinking of how cool it would be if each room had an "AR Hologram" of the couple that would correct the resident if they were endangering the perfectly passive environment. (for example if they opened a window, that would trigger the helpful AR couple)
ikr? she's so lucky, I'd love to be moved to a new place and still pay my old rent for a year and a half. the eventual 50% spike probably won't be so bad, just gotta work a bit of overtime.
it is their land though, they have the right to evict someone and develop it in real life I'm sure all of you on your pedestals don't just 'do a solid' for a complete stranger at your own expense y'all wouldn't give this lady a dollar
Never thought I'd feel so warm inside about displacing a 30 year tenant and making sure they can afford their home for 18 months. This show is the best!
Really touching to hear about how Topher is going to carry Elizabeth's legacy on in the same area where she lived for 30 years. I could feel how moved he was by her story
Agreed. I feel like booting this lady out of the place she's called home for decades, in exchange for some random (yet remarkably stylish!) skinny jeans, is exceedingly fair and necessary for the earth to thrive.
But they were obvi chosen because they are characters. Not in demeaning way but rather just funny to watch them do and say things. Building a new home versus keeping an existing one is not environmentally friendly of course no matter how you swing it.
@@privateisthegaypenguin9164 What are you talking about they're saving the environment while preserving the people and culture!!! I don't see anything wrong with that
Thank you for creating a thriving community and building a culture in New Mexico! The look on Elizabeth's face when she received the honeysuckle and white flower bath and shower oil was priceless and really made it all worth it for her!
@@toonce101 Thankfully they will hook her up with a Three (3) day grace period if she ever misses a due date. A place that generous is sure to help her move out as well if she needs to find a place more suitable to her lifestyle. 🤪🇲🇽 Keep New Mexico Weird! ❤🥸
I love how even though this show does the typical reality show trope of cutting the conversation off just before it gets awkward, Nathan still keeps enough in that you can tell the conversation is going nowhere & can even feel the awkward silences without experiencing it firsthand. Genius.
It was really refreshing to see Elizabeth’s enthusiasm for reducing her environmental impact! It seems like some people don’t get it, but she was practically evicting herself by the end of it!
Asher seems like he’s got a great sense of humour, and Whitney looks like she genuinely cares about her community. I can’t wait to see more of these two gentri- I mean generous- individuals
I love any show by nathan fielder, absolutely peak satire. A bunch of rich people gentrifying a lower income area and pushing out the people who've lived there for their whole life, and then doing performative bs to pass it off as "giving back to the community" could only be successfully showcased by Nathan and his crew
Yes I think that's the funny plot I didn't pick up on. So it's like the good guy doesn't realize he's not environmentally friendly and also moving a person from her home. I'm guessing the big reveal at the end is that they build the new house and give it to the lady
@@marinablack181 It's an easy mistake, they look quite similar. Nathan is a business expert from Canada who is quite the philanthropist himself and also has a TV show! He's saved MANY businesses from going under with excelling business advice. They'd make a great duo if they ever got together!
Nathan has created a fan base that is so good at blurring the line between satire and reality that as I was reading comments in this video I was actually getting confused as to what I am seeing is actually real. At this point we are basically a team with Nathan helping him confuse everyone else.
So heartwarming to see Whitney and Ashley giving Elizabeth a year and a half of subsidized rent. That's just enough time for her to learn a new skill so that one day she can afford to live in the community. This is the first step in Elizabeth's reinvention: perhaps she can become a Passive House engineer!
This is crazy. 18 months 1/3 subsidy? Why not just tell her the truth? "We're not throwing you off a cliff. Just a very steep slope that leads straight to homelessness" They'll never have to pay the whole subsidy. The woman will be evicted long before 18 months and forgotten
@@amil89couples are the only people who can afford places like that. Single people get singled out. We have to pay full price for everything. I think this country needs a singles tax break and married couples should pay twice as much. They pay half for everything else.
ik this comment thread is old but the misspelling of angels was on purpose !! I was thinking of that “I can be your angle or yuor devil” tweet, so let a girl be a little silly
I don't usually watch HGTV shows, but that guy Asher has really won me over with his infectious fun-loving personnality and his great sense of humor, it really makes me want to watch the show! Whitney is a very lucky woman!!😜
Economic disparity is one of the defining issues of this generation and I think it's quite clever how this show spears some of the ways we not only cause suffering through redlining, gentrification, and other policy, but then document and exploit that suffering as a wholesome "story".
I was sitting down to eat my chicken pasta when I put on this show and almost spat it out: I can’t believe how thoughtful and helpful Asher and Whitney are towards the Espaniola community. This Green Queen and King truly rule!
Aww that's really sweet what you're doing for Elizabeth; subsidising a third of her rent for 18 months. It looks like a great community too. I've never been in an electric car either.
The satire on gentrification is spot-on. I like The Rehearsal approach to this absurdly dark psychological horror/thriller/comedy/drama niche that Nathan has carved out for himself. I might try this show again, but it didn't quite hit the same. Glad to see his genius shining through though 👍 The world needs more personalities like Nathan Fielder, Tim Robinson, and Sam Richardson. Very refreshing ✌️
The Curse is written/directed/produced by fielder and Benny Safdie. A master of subtle satire and awkward comedy meets a master of anxiety inducing dramas
@@jon4715 I think she’s out of her element a bit. Nathan is a very special genre. If she did another couple projects though she seems talented enough to get to the necessary level
@@henryzhao4622 I think so too. I think improvisation is more complicated than people think. There is a famous one-shot movie called “Victoria” or something about a heist…the director’s instructions to the actors were to never repeat oneself. It’s the repetition that really takes me out of Emma’s performance. And yes, she might even win an Oscar this year, but she has a ways to go here.
So glad this show will be suitable for kids, can't wait to watch it with my son after "swim practice" (it's actually Hebrew lessons but don't tell his mom)
These two know what they're doing. I asked their competitors about thermal bridging in their "eco homes" and they haven't even considered it. I love that these passive houses are basically "off the grid". You don't have to rely on anyone but it's not like you're living in some shack cursing out the government. These have style!
I just hit up Whitney and Ash... Ashley for a quote on how they can renovate my home and relocate me for the environment! I didn't know I was such a garbage human being until Flipanthropy!
Yes although the US only produces like 1% of global fossil fuels as China and India use oceans as toxic waste dumps and cemeteries, Topher’s new environmentally friendly home will make a huge impact. It will certainly do more than simply virtue signal his selflessness and help clear his conscience after his original sin of being born white. In all seriousness.. I sell solar systems in California and these people really do exist. The part that Nathan nailed is although they say it’s about the environment, what they really care about is money. They lie to themselves and truly believe they’re doing this stuff out of pure altruism. The smugness in which they speak about it is infuriating.
“We think it’s important for Elizabeth to know that we’re not just coming in here and tearing down her current home to make a profit. We’re doing it for the environment” Hahaha Nathan is a comedic genius
Brilliant! Y'all capture the awkward "squeem" moments of HGTV hosts so perfectly! Loving the show, but I am especially thrilled to see that the story has gotten to more of the direct HGTV satire. The entire cast plays this so great. THANK YOU!
Holy shit I did a double take! This is just a fantastic addition to the show, I am always marveling at the delightful writing and creativity presented. Thank you to everyone involved :D
The grandparents dying in the house and the house being cold (cold spots) lead me to believe the home is haunted. Destroying the home will only make the spirits angry and they will likely continue to haunt the new passive home.
In 19 months she’s going to feel like a queen paying for a more expensive apartment! I applaud these two helping upgrade everyone’s lives through subsidized gentrification!
Honestly Nathan , I just finished the curse and it was the best thing I've seen in ages , like right up there with the best . I think Asher is one of my favourite characters in any TV series ever , thank you!
Really awesome for HGTV to back these lovely people. Asher is so personable! I just can tell people enjoy being around him. Whitney is glowing with excitement in nearly every shot. She loves helping the community, and it shows.
Woah ❤ Bet she was feeling a little powerless about the unexpected and immediate increase in her monthly rent so the fact that theyre going to subsidise the difference for the next 18 months is breathtakingly human. And to throw in the gift bag too! ❤❤
There’s always at least one line in Nathan’s stuff that makes me laugh out loud. “I didn’t understand what was happening but then they explained it to me and I understood what was happening”. 😂😂😂😂
The way Nathan completely disappears into Asher is just incredible. He's truly acting on another level. Look out Emmy's, that business grad's coming for the top prize next year!
What a fantastic and deeply necessary program. Thank you Whitney & Ash 🙏🏻 You two are both truly inspirational - and Ash is so funny! I would never curse him, not even a tiny curse, like taking the chicken out of his dinner or something. 🤩
These two seem like they genuinely care about the community and aren’t there just for a big HGTV pay check. It’s very refreshing. Looking forward to seeing much more of Whitney and Asher! ❤
They are doing great things for this lovely community! Actually met Whitney and Asher back in 2019 at an art auction! what a lovely couple, so glad that they are thriving!
I really like the girl in this show, but the guy is just so awkward. Is he supposed to be like that? I think he’s trying to be funny at points but it’s just not working. He lacks any natural charisma this show is in dire need of. My suggestion is that they maybe more irl type content. Stuff like Instagram reels or TikTok’s would be a great start! We need to see this couple doing normal stuff and I think it would help the guy get more comfortable on camera. Stuff like going to the zoo, eating together, having a zipper be stuck on a sweater, or even just them sharing quick tips on how to make your house more welcoming. I see a lot of potential here, but it definitely can use some improvement! I have faith in Dougie Schecter, he’s super talented.
Bravo, algorithm. This came up on auto play after a real HGTV vid. A few minutes in, I was so deeply confused and disturbed that I wanted to throw my phone into a wall. Luckily the skinny jeans came out and sent me to the comments instead. Thank you, Nathan!
I absolutely love what these two are doing for the community!!! ♥️♥️♥️ Ash and Whit are doing an amazing job and I can't wait to see what they do next!
Excellent stuff here 🙌🏼 the world really needs more genuinely thoughtful and selfless folks like Asher and Whitney! Helping the environment and taking care of local residents at the same time! Such a cute and charismatic couple too! 😊
