Join us onboard the first ever Airbus A340 landing in Antarctica. Flight: Hi Fly 801 from Cape Town to Antarctica Commander: Carlos Mirpuri 2 November 2021 Film by Marc Bow / Speedstream Films
The fact that it's an ex Emirates A340, which used to fly from one of the hottest cities in the world. This aircraft gone through everything. Respect to the engineers.
Spider-Man - "The fact that it's an ex Emirates A340, which used to fly from one of the hottest cities in the world"...what ? You haven't finished your sentence.
As the Hi Fly Antartica video reaches 1 milion views, I would like to thank you all for your support. Landing our A340 in that blue glacial ice runway was certainly challenging, but above all it was a unique and unforgettable
WOW!! I was a flight attendant for 29yrs. Pan Am 1977-1991 and Northwest 1991-2006. I've been ALL over but never to Antarctica. This video was the closest I'll ever get to Antarctica so Thank You very much for allowing us to share in this incredible journey with you!!
@@jacquesmertens3369 why does everything always have to be made political? Given that there was actually a runway and people there I’m going to guess that flying on there with a new aircraft was not destroying an untouched part of the world. If you actually were following my channel you know that I take the environment very seriously and actively work to promote new, green, technologies. But sure, you can also choose to take it like that. Take care and have a great day.
HiFly is one of the most vocal and active airlines in the world in regards of sustainability and protecting the environment. List of airports (yes multiple) in antarctica. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_airports_in_Antarctica I rest my case. 😂
@@MentourPilot Well, I unsubscribed too a long time ago because you showed Catalonian independentism ornaments in your Christmas tree.. You (or your wife) were the one going political in this case.
This all white livery seems to embrace perfectly this beautiful background of the Antarctica. It feels like this A340 belongs with its surroundings .It's really beautiful !
@@YoussefYoussef-rg4hw flight plays a very important role. Missions like this help us better fly to places like Antarctica where building a runway isn’t feasible. If you don’t like it, go and be the change.
It's official Is the airbus A340 is a Contender Is having the safest and cleanest aviation tracks with no accidents claiming any victims, Having one of the longest Scheduled and unscheduled continue Routes And now has made it mark on all 7 continents. This is a proud Moment for the airbus A340
I have been to a talk given by the man responsible for the care of the Australian ice runway at the Davis Antarctic base. There is a massive amount of care that goes into ensuring that the runway is kept in a pristine state; for example, a single drop of oil can cause a hole 1.5 metres across and 0.5 of a metre deep to develop in 24 hours because of the extra heating from the sun that it attracts so all vehicles going to the runway have to be decontaminated before being allowed onto the airstrip precinct. Braking action on the ice runway is actually quite good and the Australian runway does have GPS approaches but they have to be recalibrated every so often as the runway is built on a glacier and it is moving.
Did they talk about how deicing works at all? I would assume they can't deice at all due to the 160°F+ Type I that is typically used, but I'm curious if they have a workaround in case of storms.
Wow! So glad they made this video. I stay in Cape Town and actually spotted the return of this flight on Flightradar24. It was very out of the ordinary having a A340 coming in from the South like this.I even asked on Reddit for more info about this flight. It flew right over where we stay and was an incredible sight seeing this all-white A340 pass above me in the sky!! 😁
EXTRAORDINARY ! This comes as a tribute to the magnificent Airbus A340, at a day and age when almost everything in the skies has become a twinjet, and the quad-jet is becoming extinct. Thanks to HiFly, the Great European that is the A340 has left its mark in faraway Antarctica. Like She had her own peak experience before retirement. Thanks for Sharing!
So well done and presented to all of us. Would have been a lifetime adventure to be on that flight. A big high-5 to Hi Fly Airlines for creating this wonderful video log!!
Well done Hi Fly team! Separate thanks to the Captain for mentioning the tremendous effort the Flight Operations department done to arrange everything, from permits to ground handling and flight planning! Superb achievement 👍👍
@Marvin Walter Aviation only accounts for 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, planes are constantly getting more efficient and cleaner. Meanwhile, cars and trucks account for 10% of emissions and we are still judging cars by how powerful their engines are.
@@lennystalks422 Yes, I know and 2% is still to much and in order to save the earth we have to change our way of living. But people tend to find themselves more important then the bigger problems we are all facing when we continue doing this all just for our ego and fun. This is a shortcome of humanity. It's hard to change things that we used to do for years. We still find it normal to have cars with big engines and stuff like that...crazy when you think of the impact... It is an amazing machine for killing environments...
@@marvinwalter3713 If people would stop flying all of a sudden, the planes would stay as dirty for the environment as they currently are. To make technological advancements we have to experiment with the technology that we already have. Imagine if people stopped flying in the 50's, then we would still have planes with extremely dirty piston engines flying today. Aviation has come a long way to try to make flying cleaner, so trying to stop aviation is the same as trying to stop cleaner technological advancements. People are talking about Electric Planes, but how are we supposed to get there if we stop inventing and upgrading aviation? And by the way: What are the options? Travelling long distance overseas is done by either plane or ship. Try to figure out which one of those two is the dirtiest.
I'm 22 years old in aviation, but I've never experienced a flight as adventurous as this one. Congratulations Captain Carlos Mirpurir, congratulations HiFly. Greetings from Brasil. Stay Safe! Vaccine Now!
I think that's pretty cool. However, at 4:45 into the video, down at the bottom left of the screen, what should we see but an ancient Douglas DC-3. While I can't really see all that close up, I'm going to suggest that it's probably a Basler conversion. Flying since before WWII into the 21st century. Sure, it's cool to see the A340 being there, but the DC3 speaks volumes in and of itself.
The A340-600 was the longest commercial jet in the world (until 2010 when the 747-8 took that title). It's my favorite plane cause the cabin is incredibly comfortable. Seats are spaced 2-4-2 in economy. And Lufthanza has it set up with the bathrooms and a bar downstairs so that economy passengers can take a break from their seats.
Yep, this is A340-300 (same plane, just different stretch). And thx also to Fabian for Lufthansa correction - make that mistake all the time. Though Andrzej correction only one that made me lol.
and knowing your plane has 4 great engines and fuel to even turn around and go back home safely is just great..!!!..This AIRBUS is just a marvel ,the French Army just sold two older of them at an auction ,started only at 80g"s..!!! and they sold for only 400 g"s each..!!!..they want the new A330 now..i think that for such extreme flights having 4 engines is the way to go..
First and foremost, this is an incredibly beautiful video. Beautiful Capetown, beautiful Antarctiva, beautiful views in flight and a beautiful aircraft. It's also soo incredibly feel-good somehow. This is RU-vid at its best. Thanks for showing us this!
Congratulations! Beautiful flight and WOW! What a "greaser" of a landing! Loved watching as the spoilers fully deployed how that big port side wing unloaded. Fantastic! You bring advancement in a responsible way to mankind. Thank you for that and pay no attention to the detractors here.
As one of suburban area's teacher, this video is helpful to open the learners thought about flying to other continents where pinguins live. Thank you for this wonderful video
A tip of the hat to you captain and your crew for the great challenges you face every day and make everything look so easy, it takes a special person to do what you pilos do, much respect.
The first I ever flew was from GRU to JNB the plane was the mighty A340-600 the longest thing I have ever seen in my life. What I joy to watch this video.
I fully get your pride. Last time I met HiFly was at SCIP, back in the fall of 2018. Different a/c though. And you guys had three more engines than us, and the right fuel available locally. Good job, and many more happy landings on supply flights and tourism with your four engine widebodies.
This can be considered to be a victory of technology over the nature. I would like to congratulate the airline and the the pilots for realizing this flight. Thank you very much for the video.
How the fuck is this "exploration"? They went to a place THAT ALREADY HAD A RUNWAY to land on. That's "exploration" is it, flying to somewhere already discovered then flying back home, while dumping out pollution all the way there and back. FFS.
It’s kind of ironic to FLY into the Antarctic and land on its ice and celebrate it. It’s like sawing up the branch your sitting on and having a great party while doing so
This was a unique flight to have a commercial jet like the the Airbus A340 fly to Antarctica. As a rule there are various flights to Antarctica to support the various research bases on that continent. Those airplanes are commonly specialized airplanes for use in Antarctica.
I watch F Radar as well and always follow the big planes.I live in Cape Town and saw you fly in over my 🏠.saw when you left for Dublin again.congrats to you from an old lady who loves the planes. Congrats as well. 🇿🇦🤗
I am a New Zealander. This is both wonderful and a painfully sad reminder of a very tragic Air New Zealand sightseeing flight that crashed on Mt Erebus 28Nov1979 ..257 souls were lost. Thrilling to see this land successfully as it looks so out of place on the ice, compared with the grey coloured C-130,C-17 and Hercules. Well done! 🐑🐑🇳🇿🇳🇿NZ
Wow thats amazing, bravo to all of you! A perfect flight and so well presented too. I dont necessarily hope for many more, id like to see less pollution and the few remaining pure places on the earth left alone, but I love that we explore and know everything too. Explore without damaging. What an amazing scene, white, white and white, and also its the first time ive seen an airliner land normally with no airport, terminal, support or anything. Its like a new world, like HiFly landing on Mars. Historic flight and historic video too.
Well done Mister Carlos Mirpuri !! I see you still like very special operations like this one . No diversion possible : It make me think of those great flights to Ascension Island with Air Luxor. Very very good job . Thierry
