As requested by a viewer, here is a little discussion about how to prevent stick-on-stick contact during crossed over hat playing. Simple but effective solution. I actually have to explain this to people all the time, so it seem like this is a common issue among younger or less experienced drummers.

Hello Ryan! My name is David. I am just getting into drumming....At 51!...lol. THANK YOU FOR THE EDUCATION!! I have "Air Drummed" HOURS of concerts over the years. I am an Engineer....the world of physics and geometry is a daily part of my world. From my worlds of Shipboard Engineering and Flying, you do not be arrogant and THINK you know everything...you don't know...ASK! I have no problem saying when I am uneducated in an area. You have educated me....THANK YOU!

Trained drummers and pros know this lesson as common knowledge; I never paid attention which means I'm probably doing it wrong..lol. THanks for the lesson!!

This is a great recommendation when playing hat with right hand, but I have trouble in this position when from there, then moving to the hat with the left hand as when playing fast single stroke roll strokes on the hat or slipping in an extra hat note with the left. Any recs for that scenario? Thanks!

You just move your right hand out of the way. It’s just a couple inches different to make room for the other hand, when needed, then you put it right back.

Is there one for left foot drummers
@RyanAlexanderBloom
@RyanAlexanderBloom 4 года назад
Not really. Your foot doesn’t have much to do with it...?

I can't find your other video on hi-hat positioning you mentioned, can you link it?

I think I meant this one ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zwXW9wnwnuc.html but I really can’t remember.

What about when you want to move your left hand and play two handed sixteenths for a few notes on the high hat and then got back to left hand on the snare? That transition is where I'm getting tripped up.
@RyanAlexanderBloom
@RyanAlexanderBloom 5 лет назад
That’s a totally different story. You do want to get your upper arm out of the way for that so the position that I say is bad here is useful momentarily for moving that left hand. You just don’t want to hang out there forever.

What about if I’m playing 16th notes at 174bpm with both hands on the hi hat and I’m doing snare on 2nd beat with right hand, 2 dotted with left hand and then 4th with right hand? I can’t seem to alternate without losing groove
@RyanAlexanderBloom
@RyanAlexanderBloom 5 лет назад
Dirty Dan not sure I follow what the pattern is that you’re describing but 2 hand hat grooves can be tricky to coordinate. Sometimes alternating rlrl isn’t the best option. Sometimes it is.

I’ll just sum it up as amen break except hi hat is played with 16th notes. What other way can that be done whilst maintaining that notation with the snare hits and ghost notes?
@RyanAlexanderBloom
@RyanAlexanderBloom 5 лет назад
Dirty Dan oh ok, well I think you have to alternate in that case. No other way I can reasonably think of. There’s no trick to it except to keep your 16th perfectly even. Try it slower for a while. I don’t think there’s a technical trick that would help.

Or play like Carter Beauford (I wish)
@RyanAlexanderBloom
@RyanAlexanderBloom 5 лет назад
Alexander Jamieson yeah that would be cool. Many people, especially little kids, think crossing over at all is weird and lately I’ve just been letting them go Beauford/Hoglan/Phillips style and lead lefty. It doesn’t seem to hurt anyone and it avoids this trap.
