Such a class act, he just lost his chance to fullfil his olympic champion dream, still hugs his foe because he knows what happened to him on the previous olympic games.
I met Bernard when I was in elementary school. He was a really great guy, made time to talk to all the kids, signed autographs, ran with us. Class act and amazing athlete for sure.
@@houseboat1101 he is indeed a 100% class act! I was a D1 athlete in 2004 and got the chance to cool down with him after our race in Seattle and he was incredibly kind.
Unbelievable talent this guy was way ahead of his time, with all of today's technology and advancements in sports science, still no one can beat his record, truly amazing
I'm missing some Spaniard on that list, an Olympic champion beating Morcelli, I grew up watching them too. Fermin Cacho's sprints were something else. Good list nevertheless.
@@jimbo1858 Mcevaney has been calling the Olympics athletic events for Australian television since either 1984 or 1988. I was in Athens, unfortunately not in the stadium, but the Heineken bar I was at, the whole placed stopped to watch this race.....and cheered and celebrated the finish. "He goes from the greatest never, to the best of all time!" 4 days later he became a Dual Olympic Gold Medalist.

El guerrouj is absolutely the most dominant runner that ever lived , forget the world titles the records but the races he won and the number of times he ran world record pace races is unmatched , winning more than 80 1500m races , 30 of them under 3:30 is mind blowing . History will always remember him as the best ever
Hicham Filahi not even close , I’m talking about the 1500m . No one ever dominated the 1500 like elguerrouj did . Plus elguerrouj had the ability to dominate other distances but he chose to focus on the 1500
@@hichamrocks Aouita chicken out to face Seb Coe in the 1500 Olympics. Hicham is better but if it wasn't for Aoutita we wouldn't have had many runners that came from Morroco and Algeria thay looked up to him

A brilliant race combined with brilliant commentary...."can he go from champion to legend......he is coming back....he is a Legend...he goes from the greatest never to the best of all time". So very aptly put.....brilliant running and commentary.
We Moroccans are proud of him for achieving what others thought was impossible for him at first, he fell down, stepped up and he showed them that he could! 🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦🇲🇦
Great commentator, vocabulary amazingly adapted to the event and the athletes running , we feel he knows everyone. We miss this quality now days, in less than 20 years lot of things have changed or been lost. For Guerrouj we don’t see legends like him everyday, what determination and passion
8 years of heartbreak. His final Olympics. The greatest middle distance runner of all time. At the birthplace of the Olympics games. The gods were with him this time. A perfect commentary. “He’s a legend”.
I was in my brother's house and I remember that I jumped by happiness and break a lamp... This is one of the most memorable moment in my 'sport' life as a lot of Moroccan
Man, still bring tears to my eyes to this day, y'all can't imagine the pressure that I felt while watching that race: every Moroccan had his heart in his throat, we knew this was his last try..., I really can't fathom what he was feeling before, during and after the race... Legendary!
These is the Best 1500 Meters Race 🏃♂️.What a Run from Hicham El Guerrouj and a perfect Finish 🇦🇱and he is the best Marrocco Runner Ever. Inspiring Race and a Amazing Video with soundtrack from Gladiator 🏆🙏. Tanks 🥇
I cried the day I watched this race when he won. He wanted this so badly after doing everything else. And it was so emotional.when he finally got the one that had eluded his other worldly talent. For so long.
It costed Hicham more than 8 years to get the double gold Medaille in the Olympics Athens 2004 (1500m & 5000m). After falling and failure, it was hard nightmare than turned into a dream. Hicham’s soul and goal to win was stronger, than what ever happened to him in the past. He never give up, because he saw his victory already in his mind. That’s a character of legend….The Goat…Hicham el Guerrouj.
Hicham El Guerrouj *is* - and will always be - *LEGEND* People who do not agree, merely fail at being objective in their viewpoint. It is not about time, or measurable comparisons made with respect to any and all others, but the heart of this man. A wonderful human being, a hero to athletics and an example for others to become. The torch is passed, the laurel worn.
Steven, Totally agree. He could win races in any way. If he went after a world record, nobody could beat him. If it was a slow jog/kick race, he had a spectacular finish. He was a machine!!
i have watched this race probably 70 times , never get sick of . i always go and come back to watch it . and the sportsmanship at the end is amazing..especially Lagat..

Have watched this video no less than 30 times already. 2 things stand out. 1. Something kicked inside El Gerrouj in the final moments where he knew what exactly could happen and he was ready. 2. Silva's last lap is freaking unbelievable. Still can't get over his last lap. He overcame atleast 8 top runners in that last lap!
I have lived in Finland all my life and as a young boy cheered for Lasse Viren to win. And did he deliver! But this Hichams race is the most important Olympic race for me. He SO DESERVED this victory.

I very much hope our Morocco will have another Hisham el guerrouj in the future because he's certainly a legend the greatest of all time. he went from the greatest never to the best of all time.the guy certainly gave our Kenyan and Ethiopian brothers hard time his will to win was unbelievable incomparable and matchless.
El Guerrouj ran magnificently. Lagat shows why he is loved and respected by all athletes, due to his dignity, compassion and great sportsmanship. Every race I have seen Lagat in he has shown the same affection and respect for his opponents. Well done both of them.
Great clip. Great athlete. And great commentary. I had no clue about the story but the commentary made me instantly understand. "Greatest ever. Or greatest never... to win Olympic 1500m". It's like Lionel Messi. The greatest of all time without the world cup.
as a moroccan this was a moment that defined my chidlhood he will always be my favorite moroccan athlete and to top it he is the nicest guy you can meet from what my mom who met him told me
Bruce McAvaney is one of the greats when it comes to calling. It's only right to listen to his call when watching this great moment. I got goosebumps even though I knew the result!
His story is incredible it's like a movie. We should educate our children from this example never give up. Unlucky in the first games, stressed and didn't sleep during three nights in the second games and won in the third games. Thank you for this video
How wonderful to hear again the passion, experience and knowledge of Bruce McAvaney. The best ever calling the best ever. Inspiring and simply brilliant.
How sweet it is? He goes from greatest never to best of all time. What a perfect comment from commentator? Hicham El Guerrouj you are absolutely true legend. Quite a remarkable performance.
He waited a lot of time for this gold but he finally got it at the place where the Olympics were born. Well diserved Mr Hicham El Guerrouj. We missed those days a lot. Tokyo Olympics and competition were nowhere compared to the Olympics 20-30 years ago.
Come on now I'm moroccan and yes hicham is the best 1500m and mile runner of all time but to say he is the best 5000m runner of all time is a bit stretched. Yes he has a gold medal from the 2004 olympics but he is nowhere near the world record and that's okay because its not his main discipline
El Gerrouj was a champion. He deserved Olympic Gold. That he did it in Athens probably made it more special. Him winning here was Justice. He deserved it.
Winning in Athens for Hicham el Geurrouj was a honour, after falling & losing. It's where olympics begin in history. The school of all athlectics. He won in the end 2 golden medals. Bravo!
I disagree. Even though he’s a legend, in my opinion Said Aouita is the greatest 1500m and mid-distances runner of all times. He was very dominant in so many distances in the 80’s.
hicham is the goat of middle distance. and the most beautiful running stride at that speed you will ever see. i witnessed him run a 3.30 live and it is the most effortless powerful stride. GOAT!
Greatest race ever! Love the comment @ 3:30. 'He just wants to stroll around at this pace' -- he was literally going at world record pace at this time of the race!
