Imposing direct tax(income tax) is better than imposing indirect tax(excise duty) from social welfare point of view. Excise duty influences price structure and it affects consumer's choice by enforcing both income and substitution effect but in the case of Income tax only income effect is there. And the impact of taxes can be represented by a leftward shift in the Indifference curve.
