Hidden Burger King Restaurant Found Behind a Wall

This Burger King restaurant is frozen in time. It's filled with retro wall decor, wooden booths and old soda machines. The restaurant first opened in 1987 at the concord mall in Wilmington, Delaware. Unfortunately, the restaurant closed 13 years ago and was sealed off behind a wall. The rest of the mall was renovated around it until a curious contractor opened the locked door. Now the mall's owners are hoping someone will step in and breathe new life into this vintage fast-food restaurant.

It was terrifying because you don't expect to see a perfectly preserved 80's restuarant hidden behind a featureless wall. The place is very well preserved almost as if people were just eating there five minutes ago, except there's nobody there except you inside this fossil of the past. In the words of my lecturer of interpersonal communication, "Words have no meaning, except the meaning you assigned to them." The common consensus is that the word, terrifying, conjures an image of a shocking reaction to the presence of a thing, event or person that elicits a negative perception. Most of us disagree with the word, "terrifying", because there is nothing sinister about a place that is only accessible at a particular time, and at a particular place. It is only terrifying when someone decides to bulldoze this interior design artifact and nobody has built a time machine yet to go back to a time where people find.

@@SalisburySnake our local mall was suffering so badly they allowed Dick's Sporting Goods to build a store in between the two halves of the mall with NO ACCESS into either part from inside. So if you're inside one half of the mall, you have to go outside the mall to get into Dick's, and then outside again to get to the rest of the mall. The store that used to be there (JC Penneys) you could just walk all the way through. Plus, the food court is gone now. There's no reason to even go there anymore.

Friday night you met at a fast food restaurant, grabbed a cheap burger, everyone figured out their plans for the night and if you weren't there you sat at home alone. Pre cellphone. I remember getting to the meet up late a few times and missing everyone. You basically just sat and waited until eventually someone else would show up late too. It wasn't uncommon for everyone to meet up at 8pm, then drive by the spot again at 10 to see if anyone else showed up.

I remember some malls and shopping centers in the SE Pennsylvania, South Jersey, and Northern Delaware were slow in 2008-2009 because of the financial crisis. Some of them recovered in 2010, but started to dwindle again years later because of online shopping options. It maybe 15 years since I last stop at Concord Mall. It is not a convenient place to shop unless you live nearby or if you regularly travel on US 202 near the PA/DE border. While I would expect Concord Mall to dwindle over the last 13 years, it is negligent for mall management to not know that a significant retail space was walled off, unoccupied, and never repurposed over the same period.

Whoever gets the space, have the space inspected, take note on what needs a TLC Repair, but keep it as it is, so that way it can be a nice historical space and a unique tourist attraction to the mall. Wow! This is bigger than discovering King Tut’s tomb! I hope they announce when public tours will be available!

Funny how the mall worker thinks it’s terrifying and everyone else is like “that’s amazing”

That is so wild. I hope whoever buys it will keep it the way it is with modern upgrades for the kitchen of course. This reminds me of the 85 Toyota Camry my husband and I just bought, it was perfectly preserved for the last 30 years and looks and runs brand new. Needed a few things done, but it's like a time machine. I so miss the 80s and 90s.

Bad management at that mall or just so many vacant spaces they get forgotten? Creepy - that seems weird.

I remember seeing this Burger King whenever my parents and I came to this mall during the early-mid 2000s and thinking it looked really neat and totally 80s/early 90s. Wish we had eaten there before it closed. This entire mall actually has a cool vintage 80s/early 90s feel to it, which is why it was always one of my favorite malls to visit in Delaware and Pennsylvania.

I currently do security at this mall. I can tell you this BK space was not at all “hidden”. The wall that hides it may be replaced with plexiglass so visitors can see through it.

I definitely remember this Burger King when I was a kid in the 1980s and the food tasted better then too. I'm surprised the ceiling fan still works.

This is awesome!! It would be cool if this was revived, and the whole scenery was kept the way it looks! If I were there, I would love to see it in person lol!
