Hidden cameras in your Airbnb? Here's how to check. 

“Just unplug it..”? No-Call the cops if it’s a hotel or vacation rental! It’s illegal and probably at some point filmed children.

How fucked up is the society that we live in that you have to do some CIA/FBI sweep of your room to detect illegal surveillance devices before you settle into your room. Even more fucked up is that the corporation responsible is not held accountable.

If you find one, you should prob call the cops. Yikes.

In an Airbnb in Madrid there were cameras mounted in the corners of the ceiling in the living room and the bedroom. Nothing hidden. I unplugged the Wifi router and the host called to complain that I had done this. I regret now that I did not call the police. Spain has strict privacy laws. But this host was subsequently removed from Airbnb. I've often felt that Airbnb tends to coddle hosts, and "guests" tend to praise hosts despite clear deficiencies because they're afraid of being blacklisted by hosts who may leave negative comments about them.

If you unplug a camera, just wait for the owner to call you and tell you've removed something that doesnt belong to you. lol

Or unplug the homes wifi router. These cameras are connected by wifi. They normally dont record to memory cards. Turn off the houses wifi and they will be blind

Actually the cameras can be small, but he is right go to the power source. This is happening in hotels, motels, basement apartments, condos, especially in Brampton, ON.

The airport utility doesn't work out of the box, you need to go into your iphone settings, find the airport utility app in there, and activate wifi scan. It's not enabled by default and is useless without it. Also just because something has a QR code doesn't mean it's a camera. There are a ton of smart switches (like wyze smart switches) that use qr codes to activate them on the network. If you're worried about it being a camera you could just put something in front of it to block its field of view. Also some masking tape works wonders in a pinch.

Why is airbnb not held accountable when they have admitted that they do not report to the police when they are alerted about cameras in rentals. Why does the FBI not investigate them? It's a crime to conceal a crime especially when it involves minors. Airbnb is aiding criminals and sweeping their crimes under the rug.

Imagine that there’re such mentally ill people who seriously install camera devices in their apartments (Airbnb etc.) to stalk people, or even children while showering or undressing. It’s incredibly insane. Airbnb should check every single house or apartment before taking them online for renting!

Unplug? There are many devices nowadays that are powered by batteries. Of course they don't last long, but hidden in another bigger device they could be charged too.

Just because something has a QR code or a wifi signal doesn’t mean it is a camera. Could be a thermostat, motion sensor, smart lock bridge, etc.

what are even the penalties for those? like what would someone get who secretly filmed the bedroom of a family with children?

What if that smoke alarm and fire alarm has a camera? They both usually keep blinking..

Why bother to check? Just don't stay in people's house. Who will not put "security" camera in their house when renting out? Stay in hotel.

If the home is wired up with legitimate "smart" devices, such as light switches and power outlets. Anyone looking would become very concerned at all the Wi-Fi devices found. Smart homes are getting more common, and it's inexpensive to purchase and hook up.

Just turn off the Wi-Fi when u get there. Most devices don’t record to memory cards.

A lot of those devices plugged into outlets are suppose to be connected to wi-fi because they are remotely operated by the user to eg., turn on/off lights or a lamp, etc. Many of these devices nowadays have this feature it does not mean that there is a camera. Besides, what use is a camera at the low level of an electrical outlet? This video was not very helpful and the 'expert' did not seem all that great TBH. Overall disappointing video WP.

A very simple technique I use to avoid this problem is something we call voting with your dollars. That company allows these problems to continue. Don't give them your money.

About twenty years ago, my cousin told me that his friend and his wife had found a camera hidden in the ceiling of the bedroom of a flat they had rented in London. They took it to the police, who did not know what to do with it and said it was not illegal
