True. Tool is the only band that makes you (if you're a die hard fan or a big albums collector) buy their same album multiple times and for big money. I don't personally like as a music listener that type of approach...but nobody is forced to buy if you don't want to. I mean the artwork is totally amazing but I'm not such a Tool fan or whatsoever. The only Tool album I really like is Lateralus. I have it on cd and it's more than enough for me.

I know I'm commenting over and over and I apologize.But, I had just been released from prison when the stereoscopic just had been released about a month before I came home. My wife bought it for me and when I walked out of the prison doors she had it waiting in the car on the passenger seat for me to open and listen to in the car on the ride home. It was probably one of the happiest days of my life other than watching my children be born

I definitely think after all the clues and theories fans came up with and found, then shared on Reddit, that this in many ways an homage to their previous work. Kind of stating this is an end to an era. The era of being tied to their label. Now, they start fresh and have more liberty again. I cannot wait to see what they do after touring. Live album? DVD/Blu-ray? New album sooner than expected (still years away)? We'll see. But they said in interviews they hope to take less time now. They said they have tons of unused material and in their 2018 Music Clinic, they said, they have lots of live audio recorded. Pretty much every show for years now but never wanted to hand it over to the label. So there's that. They confirmed in written interviews (I own most magazines they worked with) that they purposely used old material that was unused from previous albums. Justin said there was stuff from even before he started (in 1995) so hinting at either Undertow, Opiate or both. That's why so much of the albums sounds like pieces of Undertow, Ænima, Lateralus and 10,000 Days (Opiate too?). People first started complaining as if the band were being unoriginal. As always, Tool albums require time, effort from the listener and lots of thought (but never overthinking or overanalyzing as we know what that leads to). It requires time! So all of it (let's say most) had thought put into it. I laugh when people hated it and pointed out why. They clearly didn't understand it and that's fine. That's the purpose of the album. Not too direct and give away the answers. Tool never was about that. That's why I laugh when people think they understood it after 24 hours of being released. Many brushed it off as a poor album compared to previous ones. Their loss.

I thought the holes in the previous one were to help create a 7 point star or heptagram. Maynard talked about it in one interview years ago (or at some point, I don't remember), how it's really hard to do it by hand. He said if you try, you'll fail basically as it's really hard. It requires other tools. But he said he used to try to draw them by hand. I always remembered that, for some reason. That was my thought on the holes. Someone on Reddit showed string going through it. It looked like you could build a heptagram with string or use it to help draw one. Maybe for that?

Ice Kold Killa yea they definately want you to try and do black magic, spacial energy conjurings, except guess where the energy goes, out of you and into them. Long time tool fan here, just kinda woke up to the esoteric satanic illuminated imagery. Don’t really want it in my life anymore and it sucks because it’s everywhere, everything that is “successful” and influential in this world is covered in this imagery, symbolism, I believe it hits tour mind in a very deep way you’re not even aware of. I still love TOOL and think Aenima is one of the greatest albums of all time, just done praising them more than god or Christ, because I did. Whatever, maybe I’m just salty cuz it took 13 years for them to make an album predicting covid and I care not for covid or the lackluster album I waited soo long for. Still love tool lol

Really interesting , mysterious on purpose I think . To me the whole thing looks like a mix of iconographies from different eras apparently bond together for the sake of an hidden message , a spiritual trip , or just fun perhaps? Like trying to build a palace mixing Art Deco, Gothic, Ancient Greek architecture and minimalism, an example. I can see the overlapping of Kabbalah's gematric and/or geometric studies, Renaissance Masonry icons, more modern representations of the rapport order/disorder…. And old school 3D Catholic styled icons. I might buy that Album , just cause I'm curious.

The song is ÆNEMA (in_uh_muh) like an enema obviously, the album is ÆNIMA, SPELLED AND PRONOUNCED differently, said quickly (oh_nee_mah). Where the song is metaphorically referring to flushing out southern California.. the album title was a combo of animus and another word, I can't recall just now. Onstage maybe he always said the songs name not the album to your crowd. 🤷

To understand the artwork, you have to know what you re looking at. The sacred geometry, chakras, and symbols point towards ascension, a central theme in this record.

Those lines seem to represent “6 down, 7 up,” relating to that 2 headed crowned being who is going in either direction. Interesting that the hexagrams (6) are linked to the band members while the septagram (7) is on the see through page overlaying it, and tries to marry the 6 and 7 in a harmonious way. I think that newer book version not having those lines is just a way to make the limited edition more special.

When John Lennon heard people were over-analyzing his Beatles songs for deeper meanings he put out 'I am the Walrus' just to mess with their heads. It was just bits and pieces of ideas and old children's rhymes that really had no connection or meaning. Wouldn't surprise me if Maynard and Co. were doing the same :)

Brad, if you notice the holes create blue orbs that are found throughout the album art. I was wondering if anyone can tell me what they mean? Also, why are there eyes everywhere on dual creature except where they normally are--palm of hand, heart chakra, throat chakra, and 3rd eye chakra? Any ideas? The video seems to show one of the conjoined creatures achiechieving transcendence but duality cannot exist within transcendence. My main concerns and somethig that no one at the Philly concert could answer was what these blue orbs are? Glad to see someone else intersted in understanding the intricacies of the album. Let me know--that goes out to everyone!!

Hey Brad, don't over think it. I think they just made two distinct sets of portraits for each release so each release would be unique. No big. That's just evidence of a band willing to give up profits for packaging/fan experience. Good on them. Last time anyone cared that much about album art was Talking Head's Rauschenberg "Speaking In Tongues" package. As far as the holes - well, especially if they aren't in each book throughout the run, I give two options: 1. They go with something. 2. They're fucking with you. I'm here to help, lol.

If you fold the "Tool" and "Fear Inoculum" logos in half it makes a syringe, right? Well, what if you were to "fold the music in half", by finding the very center point of the music/tracks, then cut it and layer the first half over the second half, played in reverse. Maybe it's the whole album or just certain tracks. That would be like "folding it in half", maybe that makes like, the ultimate Tool track.

Also when they were writing the song Descending they were calling it Ascending/Descending, possibly meaning that central track on the album is the fulcrum or pivot point. If the album is about the process of inoculation of fear from your life, why is the most damaged person described at the very end of the album? Why start the album talking about immunity and finish it describing the most fear ridden and emotionally volatile person? Before that is the song talking about psychopathy. Just a preliminary glance tells me the “story” or whatever is kinda being told in reverse. So you’re Descending into madness in one direction, Ascending to immunity in the other.

As a graphic designer I can tell you I would've taken off the lines as well. The size of the paper is different which is why the shapes didn't work as well over the photos as they did in the limited edition. I think that's why the shapes were resized and the lines towards the edges were unbalancing the overall feel and were taken off. So yeah... you're a Tool fan that's overthinking and over analyzing ;)

First time I listened to it I thought it was good but very boring and slow. After a few more listens I couldn’t agree more, minus chocolate chip trip, it’s like a full album of songs that almost match Stairway to Heaven in greatness, without a doubt their best work.

I know the artist who painted those. The symbols over the portraits are not part of the original paintings but photoshopped in by the band or whoever (Adam?) to look like part of the painting. Hence being able to make subtle changes like that. Not sure why they did it though.

GUITOLOGIST - What if the translucent pages are meant to be pulled out and put together, with string, like a mobile? When I saw the holes on my limited edition I thought it’s possible that we are supposed to tear the pages out and create something new; especially since the main figure (the one with two heads and arms on opposite ends) is a destroyer of worlds AND a creater of new worlds as well.

In my version of the limited edition I have the holes in the book, but the case of yours is different to mine. Yours is embossed on the front and looks like a textured finish, mine is a cheaper finish, with nothing embossed so there are definitely different versions

Do the lines connect to anything on the back to to other pages? Like if you connected those straight lines to other pages (would have to print copies or something) maybe they build a bigger symbol that has all the stars together? I really don't wanna pull out my stored away copies. Sorry.

With the holograms try placing it on a flat surface first and then move your head around it like a camera or a fly.. utilize a manual lenses to view it .. use differential equatorial bios to change the visual horizons instead of moving the image in your hands.. try looking at it from about a 30 -40*s above the edge of the Holligraph card..the lines are a classified secret.. the holes are for shoestring yarn leather.. I'm thinking a "dream catcher" in there somewhere.. try pulling out a black light. Use a strobe... candles... full spectrum

Try laying the vellum page with the holes over the rough page with the dots on the 2nd edition, See if anything lines up. I think the changing scale is meant to represent a focus being pulled. The characters portraits coming into sharper focus, within the framing of the gilt geometry. Just like the music is coming into focus in our minds after 4 months. The scorpion 2 headed entity seems to have an evil head, and a bishops head. Someone has pointed out the dead one has a broken spine. What is this like on the new version?

I have both editions also.. My limited edition packaging is a little different from yours. I notice the cover on yours has a gloss/matte combo cover, where as mine is fully glossy similar to the hard back extended cover. Totally agree on regretting not scoopin up 4 er 5 of the original. They were going for $200+ on ebay at one point.

9:31 the geometric design is also shifted. the painting is separate from the shape. the painting is zoomed in on the right, while the star appears smaller. it is not the same artwork from one book to the other.

I just got my copy of this version and the pyramid lenticular card has not the lenticular part, I mean that it is smooth and you can't see the movement... I'll keep it though... you know, as a (non valuable) collector's item...

Æ as in Ænima or Æther Notice the counter rotating spiral lines that create that diamond pattern in the background? (it's in a lot of the art work) it has something to do with the nature of the universe, and the structure of the Æther.

To me, Tool's thing is always a mix of sound and vision. Maybe 80% music 20% artwork. But in the same breath I'd say the 'meanings ' are 50/50. 50% they want you to find something hidden, and 50% they're fuckin with us. It's tough to top Aenima and Lateralus musically and art work wise. 10,00Days has great artwork, but musically is a 7/10 while the other 2 are 10/10. If this is their last studio album, and it feels that way, this seems a bit of a moneygrab. I've seen them twice. They came to town this tour in early November but tix were $170. I wasn't paying that. If fans are buying 2 or 3 copies of FI, including the download, I think that's insane for an album I'd give 5 stars to. I dig Tool, but this all seems geared towards 'Send More Money" from Hooker With A Penis reference. I wish FI was better musically. It sounds tired and rehashed to me.I only bought the download. Doubt I buy a physical cd, who knows. Maybe someday...….

Ok, so the lines going off of the page that you're wondering about: those lines are the points of the golden syringe. Inoculum - inoculate - syringes are often used to inoculate someone. So, much like the new Tool logo, you know, when you turn the top and bottom of it on themselves and get the syringe? Yeah, the artwork is the same. I'm not sure why they would remove the point of the syringe coming off of the edge of the pages, but there ya go....

If the new band name logo and album name design were made physical with metal rods, then you could hold those words with your hands and spin/rotate them with your fingers, so the idea is the same with those symbols that overlap the pictures. The new edition simply focused on the symbols themselves, rather than making them physical/mechanical. Those lines would visually feel more obstructing with the newer released pictures, so they were left out. Simple graphic design choice.

That is why I enjoy the band gong so much. They were really hip to much much more and display it without any pretense whatsoever. If you like esoteric music, check out Sun Ra. His knowledge is unsurpassed, but early gong is a close second.

There's evolution of spirit Into matter. The 7 sided vision crystal in the translucent pics de evolved each page as the 6 sided evolved into the 7. To make it from 6-7 is when spirit and matter coagulate. The other version that has the line connecting it hints more to this. As the physical and spiritual are connected.

In the printing business the lines that go off the page are refereed to as "Bleeds" or "bleed-offs". All printers do not print to edge and bleeds have to made by simply using a cutter to cut the edge of the paper from the page to create that bleed. It is possible to reduced the cost of the publication by avoiding the " bleeds"?? It's also a pain in the ass to cut down the edge to create bleeds from a production standpoint.

I noticed the cd in my expanded book and in my limited edition are slightly different. There’s a lot of light/dark reference in this album and artwork. The limited edition art on the cd itself is lighter, brighter. The expanded book version is darker, the eyes closer to the edge of the cd are redder and darker.

Those discrepancies are the vendor cutting corners for cost. The hole punch is costly as well as the gold foil bleeding off page.

I think the lines just simply may have looked odd after they decreased the size of the pattern, the lines would be much longer and take away the focal point. IMO when the pattern was larger it didnt stand out as much, just seemed to look past it to the portrait, when they shrunk it down it seemed to play a better roll in the image.

All pointing to a puzzle of course imo. I find it weird that you can play cct forwards and backwards at the same time together and they are actually synced. I also find that its curious that the artwork points to the same idea... forward and backwards... or a duality of sorts. Have you tried playing to the video with some tracks on the cd?? If you truly want to go down the rabbit hole google "tool multi-album movie reddit"... weather you believe the user "Timeg" or not there is definitely something more to this.

the changing of lines is for cleaner look maybe, the holes are for lining up page, anyone who wants to use page for template in making same design, holes are for lining up a piece of paper your designing on, because its tracing paper, you get to check patterns process

I cannot believe there is this much attention being paid to the two versions of the album. I own both and they are beautiful. I dont see why people are obsessing over the packaging, the art work, the lines. Who cares? There is nothing to obsess over. The most important thing is THE MUSIC. Let's focus on that please.

then why do you own both? not asking you to justify your decisions, but if it were only about the music, the download would do (especially since that is the complete album and available in hi-res). if you have both, why not compare? although, yes, THE LINES, i don't see any hidden message there either

I bought 2 copies of the limited edition. one is high gloss case and the other is a nicer mat finish. I also have the expanded book version. I find that if i take the book from the first one and lay it out on the table and take the book from the expanded version and lay it out on the table and flip through the pictures one by one at the same time that the CD is playing along with the video in the case I can hear the heart beat of the eyes laughing at me and at that point if i turn the lights off I can't see anything at all but i can feel everything. There is also a weird sensation that i'm floating down stream head first on my back while my socks slowly peel off of my feet.

There is always something to find. Seriously your first instinct should be to overlay the similar images that will point out the next "clue" or step my assumption would be the lines then holes and dots the download will be different from the DVD the prize for all the work will be the knowledge gained, a new perspective and most likely a song no one knows yet.

Hey Brad, I'm a Tool fan from long ago but haven't kept up in probably 20-years or so. Those 3D illustrations remind me of a video I watched of this dude (wish I remembered the guy's name but he's super popular on RU-vid as well) who tests & demonstrates science, physics & the like... & their effects in the world. He makes great vids! Anyhow, one of his vids involved the polarization of light & sound &, also, detailed the reason why, theoretically, dogs turn their heads to listen sometimes. Anyway, what happens if you view them through polarized sunglasses? Or, perhaps view the 3D pics from behind the translucent pages? Or, maybe both? It could be similar to viewing a 3D movie through blue+red lenses... some blocked & some enhanced... You're pretty smart, you get it. Anyway, I don't have a copy to check myself; so, let me know how she goes. Peace, homey!

I'm a bit confused here. I'm from the UK and I bought 2 copies of the first Fear Inoculum release. Both of the covers are a glossy finish on front, back and inside whereas I noticed yours has more of a matt finish with glossy dots. Also I have noticed that a lot of patterns on the back of the cover vary from one another.. is there some clues there or are they just looking for fans to buy as many copies as possible to complete some sort of "collection"?

I think the differences are marketing. It has to be different to make it a different edition. They probably used the rough drafts of the nicer edition to make a “different” one.

It’s just for fans like myself that don’t want to fork over $80 for a small digital screen when everything will be online anyways when we’re willing to pay a fraction of the price for the booklet instead to just enjoy the artwork. Nothing to translate or hidden messages to find 🙄
