Actually this is quite patronizing. It is again showing the white man as the saviour. It would have been far more powerful to give the woman the promotion she deserves and tell HER to knock the sign down. But even then again it would still be the white guy giving the promotion and allowing the black women to knock the sign down. It would have been better to make the woman so necessary to the space program that he actually grants her authority and for her to use this earned, not given, authority, to change the rules. Now THAT would have been powerful.
@USCmusic10 Because the process of solving a problem is more important than solving the problem itself. But don't worry i do not expect an american to understand that.
As a 57 year old white male, I would like to see history books with these ladies front and center. They deserve our respect, our thanks and recognition.
I'm 68 and I would have really liked to have known about all this long ago. It boggles my mind that these incredible stories took so long to be herald. It should have been known long ago. But it has now. This is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. Very moving and powerful.
@Dustin Stich not at all. These ladies were a huge part and got very little recognition. I do not care about a race....I care about their achievements.
@@marshallposey2063 if they weren't in some book somewhere... why did a movie get made ... fools like you.. their actions were in a book somewhere.. someone read of their awesome accomplishments and now made a movie about them ..
I really like how he does this by himself, doesn't ask for any help from the other men. He's the leader, and this is his burden, his overisght, and his pain he indirectly inflicted on the Africans on his team. He took that sign down on his own, to show his team how much he means it when he says "We all pee the same color". Imagine a world where we are committed and driven as a species, looking past all the pointless differences between us and working together for a cause we all believe in. It's so overwhelmingly crazy to me that we don't live in that world and instead hate on each other nothing.... I truly believe that we are not an intelligent species, but rather a species gifted with intelligence who ignorantly chooses to ignore it.
Intelligence often comes with a staggering ability to rationalise mistakes. I.e, affirmative action programs, welfare states, open borders for instance
It’s all part of the programming/lie….IN-tell-igence…..prefix “in” means “not, opposite of, without”…the word “tell” means “communicate information”….the suffix “ence” means “state of”…..can you see it??
@@alexrennison8070 Affirmative Action programs undid centuries of injustice. Welfare states are mostly those governed by US Republicans (19 out 20 states which take the most federal money are red). "Open border" is a Republican lie.
You can see why the Director added it. It didn't actually happen in real life Katherine Johnson was just a badass and just used the White bathroom without anyone giving her permission.
A lot of people complain about this scene, saying it wasn't real. It's a combination of events given a dramatic moment. But the purpose of scenes like this isn't to tell history, it's to guide the future. Every good person wants to be the one to smash that sign and stand up for people. It gives us the context when we see discrimination to know someone has to get the crowbar and get started. I love this one, and appreciate all the similar scenes meant to push us toward a better future with respect for, but not the limitations of, the past.
I was at a Subway in Atlanta/GA and one of the Subway workers yelled at a little Black Boy in the Shop trying to order his Lunch. The worker called him some Ugly names and a racial slur. He thought we would All join in and treat that Little Boy wrong and rudely. Instead; I told that worker to do his job and STFU! I never wanted him to treat a little Boy of Any Race in such a rude and disgraceful manner! I bought the Kid's lunch and made sure my Sub wasn't compromised and called Corporate later on that Evening. We should Never Allow injustice like that go; without a strong Response. Silence is Complicity! Never forget that.
@@masteroziniii2486 "it'll be a more bright yellow vs a more clear yellow" That's right: We all pee yellow. Just like we are all some shade of something like brown. There are no white people (albinos coming the closest), no black people. We all have the same pigment (melanin)--just varying amounts of it.
The ending credits almost brought tears to my eyes. When I think of the indignities my Grandmother and my Father has to endure in this country. And it still goes on to today to some degree. But I certainly don’t know how my Grandmother endures. And those before her. Love Grandma. A beautiful people with much to contribute but often hated and overlooked. We stand on their shoulders 100%❤️❤️❤️✊🏾✊R.I.P.
The challenge is to let the past no longer be an anchor to an entire race moving forward. A ton of cultural baggage needs to be cut and stop letting others BLAST A NARRATIVE OF VICTIM to the next generation. If we collectively won't let it go to allow healing, all the effort of days gone bye are wasted.
Thanks for seeing thru her eyes. At my age 71, I cannot relate to the races today who read history, but did not live thru it. I’m antiquated, foolish and disbelieved. It is an odd feeling to be disregarded after what I’ve gone through and lived through.
Ironically this scene was invented for the movie and never happened Katherine Johnson just broke the rules and used the White bathroom because she was Katherine Johnson a total badass
@@999knives on one hand I wish they’d include a scene shows her sneaking in to show off more of her badassery, but I also just love this scene. It’s also very productive as it doesn’t demonize anyone, while showing a white man doing a genuinely good thing, as most people learn by example. (Aka white men might change their perspective/behavior after seeing “one of their own” changing theirs)
@@Nimblescape I think it's the opposite of being productive, it A) takes away agency from an actual Black woman and gives invented credit to a White guy B) it makes people feel good without any real work being done. No wonder why there is such a huge gulf between how relevant on average White people think racism is Vs minorities, media like this which gives the impression that racism isn't that bad because a White person will always come to the rescue. It's the equivalent of buying the textbook and 'feeling like' you've done the homework.
@@999knives I read somewhere (I don't recall the source) that Katherine used a "white" bathroom by mistake and people didn't really care because it didn't do any harm. Apparently, a black person using your bathroom doesn't cause the world to explode, who would have thought!
@@zacharysiple629 as this is the era that many many people had been murdered for a lot less than using a bathroom I imagine lots of people outside NASA would have disagreed
I love to see characters that actually care like this. They don’t give a shit about what you look like or stuff like that. As long as they get the job done well it’s enough and I really like that
Kevin Costner was so good in this movie I love how he saw the value in people above race, creed, color when outside NASA America was tearing itself apart
@Denise Eugene thank you for sayin this. i am tired of the "white guilt" arguement just because i do the right thing. i dont judge people based on skincolor or gender... but on character and commitment. we are all humans and it is about damn time to recognize that we are all living here, breathing the same air, drink the same water and we all want the same thing. happines. and it has nothing to do with, so called, white guilt when i say i am unhappy as long as black fellows arent have the same rights as i do.
It's really unfortunate that this scene was made up, it didn't happen the director added it in to make people feel good. In real life Katherine Johnson was just badass who just used the White bathroom without anyone giving her permission.
This film not only shows the courage of oppressed persons standing up for their rights but also the importance of allies standing with them in solidarity.
Not gonna lie, I legit thought he was saying "Here at NASA we're all paid the same color." Which is more accurate considering how many shades of pee there are. 😂🤣 Stay hydrated, folks!!
I got a strange feeling because I hadn't seen the movie and I thought he was against them having their own bathroom and I was so happy to realize I was wrong.
I'm confused because in a previous scene she was saying that there is no 'coloured' bathroom in that building. But then right there in that building is a sign saying "coloured ladies bathroom", is it a different building? I get that they had to make a dramatic statement of him smashing down the sign, but isn't it a continuity error? It would have made more sense if it said "white ladies bathroom", thus smashing THAT sign and letting everyone use it.
That was the bathroom in the other building that she had to travel to. He was making the statement of removing all the signs but started with the one she had to go to use by removing that and then saying go to anyone you want preferably close to your desk. The point was he was removing the 'label' and making them equal which was absolutely right. Sadly on this amazing day with Elon and SpaceX's achievement...the moon still has craters named after white male nasa scientists that were formerly nazis that served in WW2 under hitler but moved to the US and were employed by NASA to use the V2 rocket technology to develop the rockets for the moon.
What a pleasure it is to know you are following the right leader or being the leader that deserves to be followed because you inspire respect through your acts of fairness and meritocracy..not gender..no colour...just capable, decent humans
I like the fact he became a servant leader and recognized a problem and addressed it instead of sweeping it under the rug. I like the fact he told the ladies to go wherever they please but near their desk lol he had to add that in their to still show he's a supervisor.
This is a powerful movie showing the strength & intelligence of women who broke through senseless racism to show their contributions to our space programs. None of this should have happened at all, but fortunately, these women shone through after all!
Thor Swenson I do. I’m just making a point at how different society has become since then. Yeah, it’s 2020, but I just wanted to note how far we have come in general as of recent decades dealing with racial inequality.
I gotta say it's kind of disappointing how many people say this is there favourite scene of the movie, because it didn't happen. The Director made it up to show people (who happens to be a White guy) doing the right thing, in real-life Katherine Johnson and the other computers were just badass's who used the White bathroom without permission. And now you have a film about pioneering Black women and people are like I like the made up scene with a White guy doing something that didn't happen the most, smh.
