It was his first time filming in cinemascope and was already a master. The craft behind the film is amazing.

I like The Hidden Fortress but I feel like the first third of it is WAY better than the rest, once they’re on the road they just sort of stumble through random encounters that have almost nothing to do with each other until the climactic end at the border Starts to feel like it’s padding its runtime a bit, which is not a feeling I ever got with Seven Samurai, even though Seven Samurai is a half hour longer

​​​​​​@@GodotIsWaiting4U I'll admitt that both times watching The Hidden Fortess I loved the hell out of the first act, then it felt meandering about halfway through. But I feel like the last act is fantastic. Their random encounter with the village is symbolic and more about atmosphere than advancing the main plot, that's at least how I think of it. It's like Coppola's Apocalypse Now where they have surreal encounters along the way. I see how some might not feel involved in that and want more action.

If I recall correctly, this was one of the films that George Lucas pulled inspiration from when he did Star Wars.

The original aspect ratio is 2.35:1. I think something might have been altered between importing it to Adobe and uploading it to RU-vid, the latter of which works its own brand of mystery magic when processing videos.
