Something easy to miss and is shrouded in mystery. I'm having a hard time knowing what to make of it as there's little to go on. I tried my best analyzing but there's still a lot of questions left unanswered. #IronLung
@@majormomo7401 I've read a bunch of stuff from David Szymanski about this, and there is effectively no lore outside of what is in the game. The OP's comment is effectively true. Anything you see not from the dev in (hopefully likely) future updates is just tacked on fan stuff and theories.
am i the only one who prefers leaving the "lore" of small games like this to the imagination of the player? sometimes the feel of mystery is more exciting than knowing the truth
It is commonly perceived that the note was not written by us the protagonist, but by a fellow convict previously assigned to the iron lung with the same task as us. I take particular interest in the devotional and almost theological connotations of the phrase 'beyond the veil'. It paints an interesting picture of the society and what appears to be a religious belief in a theoretical threshold and a supposed salvation that lies beyond, which circles back to the spacetime warping anomaly. Could that be the veil the previous convict was referring to? Is it really the last hope for humanity's salvation, or its doom? What _is_ on the other side? It's all very interesting. I was not aware of this monolith, it sparks some very interest theories. Thank you for sharing it with us
We could say the anomaly comes from a higher being above all, eldritch or not. Moons might have some sort of significance to it, as they not only have not been utterly destroyed by the quiet rapture, but they also have traces of civilization; inteligent life. Why would these moons have ginormous seas of blood? Maybe, just maybe, some sort of advanced civilization has spread through these moons, worshiping that entity as a God. They would call upon it, creating syphons of power to awake that Deity from their slumber. "God awoke. The accolites called for Him, proclaming Their names and becoming Their avatars. Nice theory: 1 small issue: If the previous convict survived, then we wouldn't have to explore more points of interest And if he's dead then the submarine should be destroyed and we couldn't be on it. Also in the end we get to see that after our failure they gave up with the sea because our submarine was broken to bits by some monster and it's too dangerous
@@AdamoRothward the previous convict might have decided to disobey his orders and stay in the sub until the oxygen ran out and die of carbon dioxide saturation, which is a pretty easy and nice way to go since you start feeling dopey/drowsy and just slip away. After that they might have retrieved the sub by making it surface remotely to put someone else in it: us. Really, in what time would the protagonist have time to write that note only to end up doing the exact opposite? Wouldn't make a lot of sense
@@Skynetic917 they have the technology to remotely surface a random submarine, and they don't even check what's in there? The note is more likely just a physical resemblance of the protagonist's toughts since he doesn't talk at all
Actually, with the new update that adds the terminal to the iron lung, if you go to the same place as the humming monolith and take a picture, you will see another submarine, with decals on the side saying “SM8” , the same brand as the SM13, which is the iron lung. As it looks, it seems to be torn apart by some huge beast, possibly the frog creature that destroys the iron lung. Putting SM8 into the terminal of the iron lung gives you a whole lot of text, but if you wanna see what it says, watch a different video or look on the wiki.
It's little things like this that, Fingers crossed, the Dev considers making a part 2. Or even a series out of this game. I remember it being such a small game, but am so surprised which how well known it is now!
The developer already confirmed on the game's steam forums that he plans to revisit this universe in the future. Fingers crossed for a sequel, if only a spiritual one
As much as I would like more of this game, I feel it would ultimately ruin what makes this game so interesting. If you suddenly get an explanation for everything, it will just lose its magic. It's a short game about a dying universe and a clunky submarine in a sea of blood and spooky things happen. And let's leave it at that.
@@DarkButz I think they could walk the edge of mystery on it, as long as they make more questions and provide very little information (especially no info about the world outside the sub) then we can get a good game. I totally understand what you mean though, we see it with anything mysterious becoming an overwritten fanfic in movies and games.
Imagine he made a spin off based on the other moons "Copper Heart" where it's a boat that's tasked on exploring one of the past moons. "Steel Leg" is mostly a land rover exploring a desolate moon's dessert. And "Glass Eye" where it's a surveillance blimp traversing the unknown cloudy sky of a moon. If the iron lung has a angler fish looking monster, imagine the monster in different areas outside the deep waters.
I really want to see more Iron Lung “lore” or story, the concept, build up and look of it all is just so perfect. This game is stuck on my mind, insanely cool, and one of my favorite story-horror games out there despite the actual simplicity of how its played. I want more of Iron Lung, or even updates. (I hope the developer also makes VR so I can play that)
It's like the stealth technology of fighter jets like the F-35 Normal planes would produce radar returns once they are hit with a radar wave Stealth aircraft are designed to absorb radar waves, thus making them invisible on enemy radar
Since it appears and disapears from the radar I think it might have not been picked up by whatever the space station used to make the map. Picture this- you sent a ping and there is something that apppeared once and disapeared on another scan, without any apparent frequency. You will definetly think it's some glitch or whatever
In the dev screenshots in the games Goodies folder, you can see there used to actually be 2 points of interest up in that top-right area. I'm pretty sure this was one of them, and instead of removing the objects entirely, David just removed the point of interest for it on the map. Most likely for pacing reasons I think, since most players naturally finish their playthrough at that final top-right POI. So this is probably just a leftover secret due to that, and not necessarily meant to be some super important secret thing.
This is by far my favourite mystery in this game! It would be nice to know what is the meaning behind it, maybe only the developer knows exactly what it is.
Don't forget about the SM2 which can be found a bit further ahead in that other trench. It's a sub that was born to pieces by the monster, and if you look it up on the terminal, you'll learn that the SM2 was actually designed for missions like that, unlike the SM13, aka the Iron Lung
There's another secret object like this one, in the very top right corner (in a smudged part of the map). It's a few white pebbles strewn on the ground next to a wall that make no noise. You can find an image in the game files which has every objective marked as red dots. It includes all the objectives visible on the ingame map (except the "final" one that players usually end the game on, perhaps because the image was made during development), as well as two objects that aren't objectives inside of the game/marked on the ingame map. The first is the noisy monolith in this video and the second is the one I described. My guess is that the two "secret" objects were originally intended to be objectives, but Szymanski cut them to save length and/or because a good spot for the monster eye scare is the entrance to that section of the map, and at that point it's better if the player only needs to get one more objective to end the game. Also of note is that there are some screenshots of "Chop Goblins", presumably a project David Szymanski is currently working on. There do not appear to be any results for "Chop Goblins" on the internet.
2:03 "Almost like it can appear on the radar at its own will" The object either is some kind of sapient synthetic object... Or we're dealing with an object with Quantum Properties, specifically Superposition in that it can be in multiple states simultaneously until observed, when it instead collapses only into that one possibility while observed. Given how the universe seems to have displaced a ton of itself somewhere else, it's possible this obelisk is a clue to the true nature of what happened with the Universe, or what its nature now is, if it's changed. What if the obelisk is giving off sounds of another universe, say it was in two at once in the same location, with different conditions in both surrounding it? It sounds like maybe some kind of factory. Sounds of heavy machinery could very easily create that noise if the distance between the universes ended up warping the sound. But that's just one example of what it could be. We have no ability to gain data about it in the world, so for all we know it could be a piece of some exo-universal material, or it could've been near an experiment which possibly messed the universe up, or it could be a high-dimensional object, maybe a shard of a timeline, a container for another universe, a closed doorway to another reality. It could possibly even be a 1-way dimensional window incapable of refracting light to hide itself. This is also ignoring possibilities that'd involve now-unpresent elder races, or wierd esoteric stuff (you know... Magic.). Really, with enough time, I could theorize more of what it could be. That noise could be dimensional white noise that only fluctuates because its connection to wherever keeps wavering. But, I think it's directly linked to The Quiet Rapture. Such a catastrophe could theoretically happen if every habitable planet and star were to be entangled with another universe, and had Superposition qualities, so that once everything with the ability to observe was simultaneously no longer observing everything, it all vanished. Such an event would be almost impossible, the chances of it are so remote it wouldn't be calculable as we just wouldn't have a word for it, and even if it were possible, we don't know the biological density of the universe. Potentially entire septillions of lifeforms would have to simultaneously stop percieving the universe on all levels for it to work like that, again, not impossible, but not even close to plausible... and unpreparable if it suddenly did happen. Sometimes when the obelisk disappears entirely, it's likely going to that alternate universe where the stars and habitable cosmic bodies went. It could be breathing, it's possible the blood moons themselves are quantum objects, possibly also alive at the same time, that came from the universe the stars went to, it's possible that there are worse horrors on the other side we were lucky to not have to deal with.
God i love how this game makes us go wild with speculations and theories, i feel like it's 2012 again and the dark souls community is going nuts with the lore
It could be that the reason the proximity sensors have such a tough time picking it up is because the sensors only see in a straight line; they have to be pointed directly at an obstacle to see them.
might not even have a lore but i do think it does have one, first that place with that shiny "thing" that when you get close to it you get YEETED to more than 200 meters away, like a portal, and now THIS?
One small correction. The other POI do make noises. The ominous groaning you hear from time to time is coming from the other obelisks, even though it seems like it's coming from the anglerfish at first. None of them make a noise even remotely like this one does though, so this is still pretty weird.
I love how the developer of the game just wanted to create a random game about being stuck in a box and accidentally created a really interesting idea for a dystopian sci-fi scenario where everything is gone and the only things left are barren moons covered in blood. Like seriously dude should have a go at actually writing some shit down this lore is way too interesting
the uneven appearing on radar says that it only has collision enabled (proving u we're not expected to go here (unfinished)), (game dev perspective) the submarin just has four raycasts pointed front, left, right and back. it is like having four sticks like that and because monolyth is very slim raycasts are not hitting it very well it proves that u can crash into it, i believe monolyth should appear on radar only if it is in exact front,left,right or back side
I've heard this called the humming monolith. It looks like a giant volcanic vent, kinda like the ones in the beginning. Also, is there anything of note in the far, top right section? That seems to be even harder to get to
I wouldn't mind if you decided to remove the front of the sub just to take a much better look at it, because, well. I'm curious, too. What use could it carry? Is it similar to the strange rift? Or something attuned to it? I'd be willing to play the "Quantum Physics" card.
How did the previous prisoner get out of the vessel while leaving that note behind? Unless he didn't die down there with the vessel (which would have resulted in the loss of the vessel and the note) or He was pulled out upon mission-success, disproving his own point of it being an *execution*; thus preserving the note and vessel (which for some reason, the note was left inside after letting the prior prisoner out of the vessel back on the ship)
Well there is blood on the letter and he did say "they will get their execution" which makes me think that he commited suicide. He either went back up and killed himself or he did it underwater where someone else retrieved the ship later.
I always did feel like there was a lot of open space past the final artifact, like something could be hidden there. Also it doesn't feel like a monolith. Looks more like a tall rock than a rectangle.
In the vid there are notes saying that the mission has purpose and that its only the mcs negative mindset present in the letter but I think It is a suicide mission with aims of lowering the population of those on Mars, you were convicted along side many others from Mars because you were (potentially) framed for sabotaging the filament station beyond repair. You can find these notes in the computer at the back of your vessel and you can start looking into it by typing words like the title of youre ship or other key words present
