FYI- studer vents aren’t allowed by some counties, good to check with your local codes.

Once you understand home construction, there are hidden pockets everywhere. In walls, under stairs, in the floor. Cool idea and great explanation for the gotchas like load bearing walls, electrical and plumbing.

I watched a video where the brackets for the floating shelves were hidden by cutting the drywall away from the stud. No gap between the floating shelf and wall. Pure genius.

And we love the Christmas tree we ordered from you. We painted ours green and used ornaments of pictures over the years to hang from it.

I am getting ready to do this to my bathroom mirrors. Make built in cabinets. Wife loves the mirrors. I need to frame and hinge them.

Another great idea! But, there is a lot that can go wrong when cutting into any wall. I have been called a couple of times for a "what the hell it this?" event after a homeowner opened a wall to find a pipe, wire or random bit in the wall. I would recommend to anyone doing this to use a good stud finder to try and determine what is in the wall before you open it up. The units that can locate power wire and pipes are a bit pricey, but will save a ton of time by avoiding adjusting pipes and electrical. You can also get an idea where these obstacles by going into the attic or basement beforehand and see where these are being dropped into the wall. I will use a 1/8" drill bit in the ceiling and a utility marking flags to help orient myself from the room i want to add a built-in to the attic. Please be careful, you don't want to end up calling in someone and having to pay a lot of money for a quick one day build, sometimes it is better to just put the drywall back on and find another spot.

Awsome job April like i had to do one for a home owner that had a shower and had to make sure it was water proofed took time and a little sweat and it has not leak to this day. I like how you did your bath area it blanced out very well.

This is exactly what i needed. I am making a loft bed for my son and he needs a storage for books. I hate the idea of a thick bed head. Instead I ll just make a hole in the wall for storage! yeah

The stack vent serves 2 purposes. 1.) Let air in so the system will drain. 2.) Let the stink out The septic gasses are going to vent into the wall and the bathroom will always smell like poo.

You had enough room to use 45* angle fittings and connect vent together with a rubber coupler. Done it myself.

That worked out very well. Excellent use of wall space. The whole tub area is very good. Thank you for sharing. Have a great 2021 and stay healthy.

I know what you mean about those multitools. I bought one a couple of years back for putting flooring under the door jams and it's so freaking loud. Good call on the isotunes. I got some on your recommendation and have loved them ever since!

I’m also cutting out drywall and have been using the same method of the multi tool and shop vac. I do find I can make straighter cuts using the round drywall tool cutter that fits it. I may think about adding this type of cubby for our keys near our door since I’m already removing the drywall there.

4 pvc elbows and 3 short pieces of pipe could have rerouted the vent instead of risking septic gas in the wall.

I remember seeing a 1950s popular science article that used the same principle for making a built in repair station. Used the space between the studs for hanging tools, and I think it had a fold down bench. When folded up it wasn’t flush to the wall, but darn near. I wouldn’t mind doing something like that, but my wife lives firmly in the Land of No...lol

It's a minor detail (and I am from UK so regulations will be different), you cannot add an air admittance valve (AAV) anywhere on the system. It needs to be installed above any components on the system so that they can draw air. If for example you had an AAV below a sink trap, it wouldn't be any use to that trap and could cause a vacuum. There are other regulations in the UK, such as having to have an open vented pipe somewhere in the system, even if it's on a branch of the system

I did this several years ago to make a three shelf unit in the bathroom wall. I built the unit first, then held it up against the wall and traced out where to cut the sheetrock. I had one stud roughly in the center, which I cut that section out, and attached the shelf unit to the stud top and bottom. This little shelf unit holds extra bottles of shampoo, bars of soap, etc., as well as a couple tchotchkes. At some point in the future, I will remove my medicine cabinet, install a plate mirror, and install two of these units, one on either side. I may even use some frosted glass (or acrylic) doors. I also installed niches like this in my grandson's bedroom (He has his karate belts mounted inside, with screw eyes in the 5/4" casing to hold 2 sais - weapons), and in my granddaughter's room, which houses the television mount, so the swivel arm is less noticeable.

Oscillating tools are the best drywall cutters, especially with a drywall jab saw. I have an oscillating tool that I just use for drywall, so I'm not caking gypsum on the one I use for everything else.

It took me a while to figure it out but I've found it much more effective to cut drywall with a reciprocating saw at a very shallow angle, rather than a multitool. For finished lines, perhaps taping it first and scoring is a good idea, but trust me, the saws are faster. No getting around the dust, though. Drywall is a mess putting it up, taking it down, and in between,.

These AAV (Air Admittance Valves) can't be inside a wall by code and are not allowed in every state. They are gonna fail over time and will have to be replaced.

I am a retired building engineer and architect in the Netherlands. There are houses in my country build with walls like in your house, but the Netherlands is a wet land with lots of clay. That means most houses are build with bricks, concrete other materials and less wood and drywall. What you did is nice, but I cannot copy it in my brick walls.

You should have built a full 2x4 frame inside the wall with 2 studs on each side, one stud to go behind the drywall for support and one stud to support your shelf box. Right now if someone leans on the wall next to the shelf or the edge of the shelf the drywall will push in and might crack.

Keep in mind though, not all states have the same house codes for putting a drain vent into your wall. Wish my state allowed this. :P

I would love to do this on my back and side kitchen walls to house hidden spices. I don't have enough cupboard storage space and the hidden spice racks would be perfect there. Need a proper cover so the spices cannot be seen though.

I'm a big fan, but not on board with the venting hack....just not a good idea. Plus, some viewers may not completely understand the concept of load bearing walls, and this one could come back to bite them

So, you could expand on this too. Add a decorative door (American flag, painting, etc.) and make it hidden storage, with a hidden magnetic lock. OR add a plexiglass cover, and flush mount /wall mount a TV.

I did something similar like this but did it vertically in the wall spaces between studs going up the steps. Recessed shelves with pictures and keepsakes adore the steps now and no one can hit them going up the steps.

Thanks for making this video... been considering doing something similar to my bathroom medicine cabinet for a while now, but haven't taken the plunge. Question: Why not use a circular saw to cut the studs? You could set it to depth less 1/16" and just let it ride on your drywall.

Hi there April, I have an idea for you. How about building a homemade guitar pedalboard. It would need to have a lid that you could easily take off and put back on. It would need a handle, feet, and latches to hold the lid secure. Also, it would have to be able to accommodate at least these pedals. Number 1. a global power supply to feed all the pedals, 2. a wah-wah, 3. an overdrive, 4. a chorus, 5. a delay, and 6 the channel switcher for the amp. 7. Room for one more pedal, whatever the user might want to add. The last thing is it can not be too big and heavy. I made mine in 1989 and I am still using it. I built it without power tools and would love to have built it in a shop like yours.
