I was once visiting a friend in another country. He promised we can stay at his house, though he is doing some renovations. When we arrived, the demolition crew was finishing taking down the first floor's walls. Turns out renovations meant complete reconstruction. We lived in this friend's RV for 2 months... It was the best of times and the worst of times :)
Neighbours offering does not surprise me. People in the Maritime provinces are ever so helpful and friendly. Unless you are from Toronto, then they just make fun of you. :)
Old growth lumber is worth salvaging. I live in a 115 year old home built with real 2x12 old growth hemlock and the wood is way stronger and denser than any lumber one can buy at the depot.

Really nice to see the locals still have that mentality of the first settlers. They even built entire homes and barns for the newcomers! Have the bags of seed, two oxen and some cash to get them going. Amazing! When we move from busy Netherlands to the Rocky Mountains our neighbors also helped all the time.

A nice breeze to blow away the bugs and the loan of a cozy cabin! What's not to love. I had a similar issue with lumber pricing when I started our house, hopefully things will start to stabilize soon.

Gavin, you’re a star. Living in a converted barn in Cumbria I can say that friends and in particular my mad mate Del made it possible. Projects like yours depend on support, Co-operation and a huge dollop of madness. Even this morning after over 15 years in this spot fitting a new gate wouldn’t have happened without my mate Richard, and Dave across the road took the old one for firewood. Anyway… here’s the big idea… start a Team Building business and get executive types to pay you to do the work on your church, with bonus sermons on wise stuff from your self… could work.
They do get the remnants of hurricanes blowing through on occasion. Your on the East coast now boy. Happened to me once on Vacation. Still a wonderful place to live.
Oh Gavin you have seen nothing yet in regard to the wind. We moved from Ontario to PEI last June and the winter was, let's say interesting. Loved it but the winds and 20 ft snow drifts were fun
Your photo and Towers series are the only photo based content my wife will watch with me. Very entertaining. She did just comment though that she just wants to see some progress with that renovation.

Awesome as usual. I bet that church will be amazing when everything is finished. Will you add a 1st floor with such a high ceiling? I'm guessing a 1st floor, occupying half of the hall, with a circling stair made with the wood of those seats... yeah, that you me cool. That 1st floor could be your photography studio/office, with the living room down below taking advantage of all that high ceiling

HI Gavin & Amanda i would give anything to be there with ye redoing the old church as i am a Carpenter and joiner with 30yrs experience in what you are doing BUT as luck would have it i am now disabled and cant work any more had accident in work and left on crutches the hole time 12 yrs ago.... BUT now i am a keen photographer and a BIG fan of ye so please keep on vlogging your two channels as i have learnt a lot form your Landscape vlogs THANK YOU AGAIN
Yes, it’s friggin windy here all the time. Getting your famous « réflexion » (pronounced with your characteristic French accent) shots around here will be as common as unicorn sightings and dinosaur-ending meteors.

Looks like pitch pine, but I could be way off….a lot of smaller churches in the UK used it as it was cheaper than English Oak but was still resistant to rot being so resinous…..great video…
Can’t think of many projects that might be more rewarding than something like this. Could the wood be pine coated with cedar oil? Given that you’re a landscape photographer Gavin… what’s the scenery around the church like? There’s only been small glimpses of it thus far, but is that also a major selling point for the place?
Hurricane force winds, lol. You ain't seen nothing yet. So far this year hurricane season has been mild but we still have a couple of months to go. Then there are the nor'easters in the winter. You will be okay because you have good neighbors. They will help you through the storms. They are helping you already. I think I detect a bit of Tom Sawyer in the way you tricked Amanda, lol. You know who’d have been good at pulling nails out of pews? Adam Gibbs. You need to lure him over under the guise of a photography trip, then put him to work.
I know it’s over with now but depending on how many nails were in the wainscotting you may have been able to use a circular saw and cut below the top nail and above the bottom nail and pry out what’s in between if there were remaining nails. For anything similar maybe try something like this.

It was tough watching you toil while trying to enjoy coffee and chocolate. There was a concern over bad timing on my part ending in a moist cloud of coffee shooting forth😂 Some of the wainsCOATing appeared to be brittle. It also looked like it was made from different species of wood. Wondering if some of it was cedar. In my limited experience, the cedar I had was brittle. The bay you droned over...stunning!!

Although the stained glass in the windows is very nice, I might think about some sort of winter time insulation (bringing up the R factor) that can be removed during summer months. Western cold is (dry cold) vs Eastern cold which is (bone chilling) which you are about to find out.

you should ask some of your viewers who are around to help you. I am following Martijn Doolaard (who is renovating his house in the mountains in Italy) and he often get people over who help with it. :)
I might be wrong but the window trim you showed looks like fir. Fir has a distinct smell but doesn’t smell like cedar and definitely smells different than pine. Fir was a popular choice for interior trim and exterior fascia boards back in the 60s - 80s because its grain is more consistent than pine and the wood has fewer and tighter knots, depending on the grade of the wood. It would be a shame to paint it but to get a better stained finish you might have to plane off the original finish. Having said that, a better and more impressive trim would be quarter sawn oak (white or red) with a natural finish. Watch out for fir splinters because they are brutal. Nice video.
