HiDef: Cleveland Steel Mill Railroading / Arcelor Mittal's "The Crow"

Arcelor Mittal's steel mill complex is one of Cleveland's railroading hidden gems. Tucked behind the drawbridges and lake view mainlines is quite a busy little railroad. The Crow as its known, shuffles slab trains, bottle cars, empty/full gons and interchanges with both NS and CSX 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I hope you enjoy just a piece of what happens in the "Industrial Valley" of Cleveland Ohio.

Steel mills are quite fascinating to watch in action, especially how they make use of locomotives during the process itself. Great video!

Whoever said Cleveland's steel industry is dead is very wrong. Thanks for sharing!

In 1995 I attended Ohio auto diesel tech.Everyday after class I would just go and ride around this place for hours and just watch everything,Between this place and the bridges in the flats I was amazed,We didn't have anything like this or the swing bridges where I came from.I returned to Cleveland last year for the first time since 1995 and it has really changed,

This is really cool to see! Growing up in Bethlehem ,Pa during the early 2000s I never got to see anything like this, no trains or running Mill. We have the last heavy forge in the US now though but their trains and switchers don't come out. Thanks for posting this! Really neat to see!

Sounds like home sweet home! lol Got a great shot of me in there BTW, Thanks! Working in the plant all day, I forget just how majestic these machines are. Are you a big fan of these little engines? Ever been inside one? I believe 1556 is in the RT building for it's overhaul, I can try to get you some video and pics. It may be in pieces tho....

Good industrial railroading. Excellent. There was even a shot (1:58) of some 'cattails' ……...hadn't seen any of those in quite a while....thought they were extinct.

When I lived out there, I drove my car right through what I think was that mill, though the roads were much poorer. I was hoping to see them pouring or ladling molten steel, but the weren't. A security car took interest in me and followed me until I left. That whole area is devoid of life, not even the tiniest weed, and sits in a canyon amid apocropical ruins, nothing like WWII or the 50's.

In response to Intermodalman 123 It's not the trucks that could be an issue. It's the "friction bearings" that have an oil bath to lube the axles. They could have roller bearing axles on those truck. If the equipment is on an Industrial track(S),the FRA usually doesn't have control. As long as the cars are low speed & even if it does go on the main, it will be as safe. I am quite sure A.C's car department keeps friction bearing oil levels where they should be. My dad was a C&O Carmen & one of his duties was to check oil levels in friction bearings.

@kenshin891

charles97th Yes. Nearly shut down for good around 1999-2003 then ArcelorMittal bought it. Was LTV/Republic Steel before then

they still use bettendorf trucks, wouldn't it be horrible scenario if they failed on a bottle car

How is filming here? I head security is tight and they kick our railfans filming from the road. Is this true? Great video BTW I make it to Cleveland at least once a year and I have yet to film here

Security Guards can't do shit if your filming from City owned or other public land adjacent to the mills property. I have had issues with rent a cops when filming near an Oil Refinery the Tulsa Police take my side every round.
