This translator is simply amazing. He's prepared to not just translate but localize grammar and sentence structure by taking notes on what has been said. A fantastic interview where, for the first time in a long time, language didn't feel like a barrier to understanding (I'm looking at you Nintendo Switch press conference!!!!).

Watched this live and it was amazing. Kojima is such a fascinating dude, and Greg's just a 1 on 1(2) phenomenon. Also, the translator was great and we couldn't have this interview without him.

Hide Kojima is one of the most likeable, cool game devs. Yet I can't speak his language. Yet everybody feels the same reading any comment section. He is a living legend and a his countries living national treasure.

The greatest twist of all time would be that Hideo actually speaks perfect English, and this is all one big ruse.

Man, half an hour in and he's still pestering the man with "when is it out" questions. You know it's obvious he's not gonna tell you that man, you have Kojima in front of you, ask deep and meaningful questions like the trailer is trying to do. that said, the interview gets much better later on, this was great to watch, always fascinating to see a genius talk about his ways.

overall good questions, but the delivery was completely disrespectful. if you know japanese culture or have been to japan for a few days, you would understand the insane level of disrespect shown by greg. luckily the japanese are usually forgiving of american ignorance.

By the way, I'm glad to see so many people appreciating James' job here. I'm a translator and interpreter myself, and damn near 2 hours is very tiresome on your own. But I also see a lot of hate on the Nintendo Switch interperter. I'm not gonna go too much into that, but take into consideration the fact that this here is what we call liaison interpreting (my favorite kind, probably the easiest one), while the Switch interpreter had to deal with the fucking NIGHTMARE that is simultaneous interpreting. Unlike James, the Switch interpreter did not have time to make notes, much less ask questions prior to transmitting what was being said. I sound stupid when I'm doing simultaneous interpreting, myself. It's not easy.

Doesn't Kojima speak English though? Did he understand what Greg asked or was it all through the translator?

hey Greg great interview. May i suggest for future translated interviews you do an edited and unedited one. So the edited one would take out a lot of the Kojima bits and the translator talking to Kojima and would just have Greg asking questions and then cut to the translators response. And you would still have an unedited one for those whole want it of course. Awesome interview tho.

Nintendo, take some notes. This was a 1 on 1 interview between a video game personality and a developer, yet the translator did more of a professional job than every translator on the official Nintendo Switch Presentation.

They should of got that bad ass translator that square Enix used with all the FF15 interviews. The guy was a BOSS.

when you think about it especially with this game were it seems like the main characters will be english instead of dubbing, it's pretty impressive that he gets the performances he wants when, without trying to sound like a dick, his english is pretty limited. I know he has translators but still the actors must have an extra layer of challenge when not being able to speak directly. I know mikkelsen is a really good linguist but as far as I know he does not speak japanese.

It's nice to see the whole thing, but as someone already commented, it would've been a lot better to cut the parts where the translator is speaking to Kojima, and even when Kojima is talking. That way the video would be a lot easier to watch, and shorter.
