Been on Fish Oil for a long time now, VitD3 for a long time now, Vit A I get in my Spirliana supplement, I have an organic ginger in a spice jar, but I a know I have not used it in the quanity as you are implying, like 200 mg daily? Resveratrol is not on my supplement list, but I will be looking into this. Thank you again and again.

I was diagnosed with HS when I was 23 years old. I got my first bump at 17, and from there up until 23 I was diagnosed with about seven different skin problems until a doctor at a free clinic said I have HS. I went for tests and so on and so forth, and I have been living with this for 17 years. I am currently 34 and I have adapted. I still get the odd bump and when I do its usually extremely painful. But thanks to diet, supplements, exercises and a few tips and tricks from various website, I am mainly pain free.

I have been taking these supplements for almost a month and I have noticed a significant difference in the amount of breakouts. My skin is more clear and I've only had 2 breakouts since starting the supplements. I'm also using a natural honey cream like she suggested and Derma-E cream. The combination has been awesome. The Derma-E has basically healed breakouts over night and the honey cream acts as an antibiotic keeping bacteria away during the day. It's worked better than anything I've tried.

Thank you for this information. I have been struggling with this condition for close to 10 years. I knew there had to be a solution for it, but after hearing from doctors that "Its just bad luck" and "This is just something that happens to some people" and "There's no cure, you're going to have to learn to live with it", this is HOPE! How will I know the dosage for these supplements? Will I need to speak with my PCP before I begin? Will supplements have fewer side effects than drugs like Humira? I know that's a lot of questions, but you're the first doctor I've seen who seems to be knowledgeable about this condition AND able to offer suggestions on managing (or hopefully elimiating) the problem. I look forward to your reply. ☺

Hi Jan, We are so glad this information has been helpful. Due to potential interactions with other medications, it’s always important to talk with your doctor before starting supplements. Here is a drug-nutrient checker that may be helpful: www.integrativepro.com/Resources/Drug-Nutrient-Interaction-Checker It’s also helpful to talk with a doctor that is familiar with supplement quality to ensure you’re getting a safe and effective product. A therapeutic dose for fish oil is typically 2-6 grams per day and resveratrol 20-200 mg per day. While these supplements are generally well-tolerated and safe, they can both have blood-thinning effects. Vitamins A and D are fat-soluble vitamins and could be harmful if dosed incorrectly. We always take a thorough medical history and obtain lab testing before making specific recommendations. Supplements can be a very safe and effective in addition to a healthy diet and lifestyle when given appropriately. Please know there can be a number of contributing factors to hidradenitis suppurativa including genetics, lifestyle and environmental exposures. Supplementation is just one aspect of treatment. Thank you for the thoughtful comments and questions!

Dr Ashley, Thank you so much for being such an informative resource to those who suffer with this issue. I wanted to know if it is safe to take all of these tablets at one time and are there specific dosages you recommend? Thank you.
@AttuneMed
@AttuneMed 7 лет назад
Hi there! I'm glad you find this information helpful. In general it is fine to take all of these supplements at the same time. It's best to take vitamins with meals, but herbs often do better on an empty stomach. High doses of resveratrol are fine for most people, but we have to be careful with vitamin A, vitamin D, fish oil and zinc in high doses. I typically individualize my dosages based on what's going on with my patient. Depending on your medical history or medications that you're on, there can be interactions even with basic nutrients. I always recommend consulting your health care provider before taking anything.

Vitamin D3 is great, but when I upped the amount I get (adding a supplement), I had to also eat more foods with magnesium to balance it. Saw that D3 makes good use of magnesium, so if you try it and feel a bit off, grab some magnesium rich foods to eat. 👍

Thank you for your videos. I’m wondering if you have any idea of a connection between HS and Anemia of Chronic Disease/Inflammation? Thank you in advance for any input.
@AttuneMed
@AttuneMed 6 лет назад
Hi, Jamie- Yes, there are several mechanisms going on with HS and anemia of chronic disease. First, pro-inflammatory cytokines (signaling proteins that regulate the immune response) can prevent the kidneys from making erythropoietin, which is a hormone that promotes red blood cell formation by the bone marrow cells. It also makes the bone marrow cells less responsive to the little bit of erythropoietin that is being made, so even fewer red blood cells are being produced. Second, the cytokines cause immune cells called "macrophages" to use up a lot of your iron so less becomes available to the body. TNF-alpha, a cytokine that is very high in people with HS, causes the intestines to absorb less iron. And finally, the discharge from HS lesions often contains blood, which can lead to anemia over time.

What a supportive wife you are! ❤️ We have some great information on our Help for HS website, specifically on the diagnosis page: www.helpforhs.com/diagnosis/ www.helpforhs.com/what-is-hs/ www.helpforhs.com/symptoms/ www.helpforhs.com/faq/ It's great that you're willing to work with an ND. I would do an online search for your state's association of naturopathic doctors or physicians. Also check out the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians: naturopathic.org/ Keep in mind that there are some great NDs who choose not to join our associations, but they're still qualified and licensed. In that case, a simple online search for "naturopathic doctor" will bring a list of providers in your area. The key is to make sure they graduated from one of these accredited schools. Unfortunately there are a lot of fake doctors out there: naturopathic.org/page/Education

I would recommend going to see a dermatologist if you are able to! They at least know more than the general doctors about HS. My doctor was also unhelpful and just thought it was an infected ingrown hair and gave me antibiotics, finally got the official diagnosis from going to a dermatologist! But I was already pretty sure I had it literally just from googling it myself and figuring it out myself, which is kinda sad considering most doctors don’t know very much about it

Hi Doc, your videos have changed my life. I am now following an anti-inflammatory diet and i am on the supplements that you have mentioned in the video, however not on vitamin D3 yet. I just wanted to know if it is safe to be taking so many vitamins in a day? I currently take the vitamins at different times in the day and im also taking metformin. Please advise. I have been flare free for a week thanks to your videos. Also, will taking these supplements help with the lumps/boils that usually come up before my period?
@AttuneMed
@AttuneMed 6 лет назад
Thank you so much!! You have no idea how happy it makes me to know that I've helped someone. In terms of taking vitamins, they're generally very safe, but you want to use caution with fat-soluble vitamins like A and D3. Also, zinc is very safe but it could theoretically deplete copper levels at high doses over extended periods of time. Zinc is very important for healthy immune system balance and maintaining insulin sensitivity. If it's something you're able to invest in, I recommend a comprehensive nutrient test to see what's deficient. We use this one in our clinic, but you can order one for yourself from True Health Labs: bit.ly/2nsgH9r Metformin is generally safe and I only worry about it when it's combined with known blood sugar-lowering supplements (like berberine). However, metformin depletes CoQ10, B12 and possibly folate from the body, so those are other nutrients to consider. I always recommend talking with your doctor first because everyone is different. Flares before periods are due to interactions between hormones and the inflammatory response, so any supplement that helps to support the optimal functioning of the body could potentially help with premenstrual flares. Certain herbal therapies would also be helpful. I'm so glad to hear that you've been flare free!!! I truly hope it stays that way for you! :-)

Waxing is same as shaving. It still can cause folliculitis. the best hair removal procedure you can take is Laser treatment for hair removal. If it's not affordable atm, you can just trim your hair with an apporiate pair of scissors . Make sure you hold a mirror to have a close look at where you are trimming in order to avoid any accidents.

@AttuneMed
@AttuneMed 5 лет назад
I'm not a big fan of store-bought vitamins because they aren't guaranteed to have the proper quality control, or to be free of harmful contaminants. It's been found that over 30% of supplements on store shelves don't actually contain the ingredients listed. Of course I'm biased, but my favorite multi (and the one I personally take every day) is our Strategic Nutrients. It's pharmaceutical grade and contains the active forms of nutrients that our bodies can actually use: www.helpforhs.com/product/strategic-nutrients/

I eat plant-based minimally processed foods. Tons of multicolored fruits vegetables including carrots, beets, kale, spinach, rhubarb, sweet potato, persimmons, wild blueberries, strawberries, plums, avocado, grapes, Brussels sprouts, leeks, bok choy, many types of sprouts, micro greens and more. My grains are buckwheat (most often), amaranth, millet, brown and wild Rice and oats I eat and refuse to give up legumes, beans, and pulses but I have reduced consumption of these foods and increased consumption of hemp protein to compensate. Do you think I should supplement with vitamin a because by my reckoning I should be getting more than enough through diet I also take digestive enzymes with every meal.
@AttuneMed
@AttuneMed 5 лет назад
Hi, Naomi! If you're a part of the estimated 30% of the population who isn't genetically able to convert beta carotene from plant foods into active retinol, then it would probably make sense to supplement with vitamin A. If your diet is purely plant-based, however, I'd be much more suspicious of B12 and/or zinc deficiencies. This is what I see most often in practice. It's always ideal to get your nutrient levels tested so that you can personalize your health regimen, but a high-quality multivitamin is something I recommend across the board. I do worry about beans/legumes for people with HS because they are quite starchy (which affects blood sugar) and the lectins they contain are harsh on the gut. People with HS tend to have more gut inflammation overall, so that could be a challenge. With that being said, we should all be eating an unprocessed, whole foods, nutrient-rich diet, and it sounds like you're eating better than 90% of the population and taking good care of yourself. :-)

Attune Functional Medicine thank you so much!!! You are so kind to offer your opinion and assistance. Do you have a patreon? I am using intermittent fasting in an attempt to decrease the amount of insulin I had in my blood at any given time. My A1C and blood glucose are fine but my brother and mom (both doctors) think I should have a 2 hr glucose challenge and test the insulin and I agree. Do you think that makes sense? I am obese and highly active. I have a history of severe eating disorder but not currently active. So I am trying carefully to navigate this diet change to help HS. I I forgot to mention that I supplement all the B vitamins as I am vegan and also I take zinc/magnesium/calcium with vitamin D. I also take curcumin with bioperine and I take occuvite and a multi. I am thinking of adding coconut Aminos. I did adjust the amount beans, legumes, and pulses to have less of them per meal and not have them at every meal. I have cut all baked goods, pasta, white rice and eat no flour and of course no dairy. I eat tofu twice a week or so. I drink unsweetened almond milk or hemp milk. I am not eating texturized vegetable protein as it is highly processed and I am not eating myco protein (qorn) in case I have yeast issues and no longer eating Sietan because of the gluten. What test should I request for regarding food sensitivities? My diet is becoming rather constrained. Even though I eat tons of phytonutrients and all I want to make sure I don’t set myself up for deficits by unecessary elimintion. I’ve seen companies that advise they can use DNA to tell you what you should or should not eat (genoplate). Is this idea legit? I am going to bariatrics clinic on the 31st of this month to get a referral for nutritionist. I hope it will help me.

@AttuneMed
@AttuneMed 7 лет назад
Hi, Julie! When it comes to fatigue, it’s important to know the exact cause. I’ve seen that many people with HS have multiple other health issues going on. The supplements that will be helpful depend on the root cause of the fatigue (nutrient deficiencies, thyroid conditions, anemia, mold toxicity, viral infections, blood sugar imbalance, etc).

@AttuneMed
@AttuneMed 7 лет назад
Hi, April- Thank you for the great questions! The first supplement I mentioned was resveratrol, which is an antioxidant. My favorite resveratrol product is Resveracel by Thorne Research. There is an algae-based omega-3 supplement (Algae Omega from Nordic Naturals) that might be suitable for someone with a seafood allergy since it contains no fish or shellfish proteins. I would advise checking with your doctor first, however. Also bear in mind that since Nordic Naturals also manufactures fish products, there could be a risk of cross-contamination. There may be other brands of algae-based omega-3, but I have not personally used them in practice. Another thing that is very helpful for hidradenitis suppurativa is zinc. Zinc plays a very important role in the innate immunity of the skin. It needs to be dosed quite high for a short period of time, and I prefer the zinc picolinate form. This should be done under the guidance of a professional, because long-term zinc supplementation can deplete copper. And, of course, I insist on a clean diet. This is foundational. Plenty of green and colorful vegetables, grass-fed protein, no white flour foods or white rice, no sugar, no refined vegetable oils and no dairy for at LEAST 6 months - often longer. This type of diet reduces inflammation and lowers insulin levels - both of which are crucial for this condition. There many other things that are helpful for hidradenitis suppurativa; I will plan on making more videos about this topic soon. Thanks for watching and please reach out if you have any other questions! :-) Dr. Ashley

What i have found helps is buying 7 different types of bras. Never wear the same style bra 2 days in a row. If you change it up everyday with a different style it reduces the inflammation by so mich for me. Your skin wont get used to the same bra. I boughta style bra that i loved and bought 5 each in different colors which was a mistake. My skin got used to how the bra wore and caused legions. When i wore a different style everyday my legions stopped by about 50% i am a 40 DDD as well and get tgem under my breast. Also if you get them in groun area it helps to wear a different type of underwear everyday rather than buying the packs with all the same type.

I disagree with this being just a skin condition. I have been suffering from HS for about 5 years now and I am still trying to find a cure. I have cut out everything you have mentioned in other videos and it has not worked. I have been tested for many things and everything is normal. The only thing I can pin point about HS is that I flare up a week before my period comes. Same way I get one dumb pimple on my chin every time. I'd like to know more about all of these studies you keep citing. There are other doctors who study this and believe is a hormonal issue. I refuse to go on Humira or end up disfigured due to surgery. I am a military spouse and unfortunately have not found a physician who is experienced with HS. This is a horrible thing to live with.

I just need the symptoms to lower in frequency
@AttuneMed
@AttuneMed 7 лет назад
Hi, I feel your frustration. I agree with you that HS is not simply a skin condition; it is truly an inflammatory condition with multiple factors to consider. These factors include genetic predisposition as well as lifestyle and environmental factors that can contribute to the chronic inflammation that leads to the skin lesions. The lifestyle and environmental factors can include a number of things: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, smoking, mental health, social support system, nutrient deficiencies, toxic metals, infections, mold and other chemical exposures. If you’re not seeing progress with diet changes, it may be helpful to work with a knowledgable practitioner to investigate some of these other things. Also keep in mind that Stages II and III are much more difficult to get under control. Hormones do play a role in HS but they are not the only factor. Hundreds of peer-reviewed medical articles can be found at pubmed.gov. (Type hidradenitis suppurativa into the search bar.) It can take some time to investigate and address the multiple factors involved, but remission is possible.

Hi, Rahul- I am not a fan of whey protein (for anybody) because it significantly raises insulin levels. Having high insulin levels will promote inflammation and thickening of the hair, which are VERY bad things for HS. My favorite protein powder is Pure Paleo Protein from Designs for Health, which is basically just beef in powder form. If you're sensitive, you could look into their unflavored version. I'm not concerned about fat (except for refined vegetable oils like canola, peanut, sunflower, soybean and safflower). Best of luck to you!

@AttuneMed
@AttuneMed 7 лет назад
Great question. Yeast is very problematic, so look I recommend avoiding probiotics that contain yeast (such as Saccharomyces boulardii). Also, many B-vitamin supplements, especially food-based ones, are derived from yeast. Some people take nutritional yeast for its B-vitamin content, but I would advise against that.

Thank you so much for this answer! I've been moving towards a vegan diet, is there any b-vitamin you recommend that doesn't contain yeast?
@AttuneMed
@AttuneMed 7 лет назад
Hi! I would be careful about transitioning to a vegan diet. While some people can do alright eating vegan, I have found that most people cannot sustain adequate nutrition long-term. In the case of an autoinflammatory condition like HS, it becomes even more important to eat plenty of nutrient-dense foods such as meats and organs, wild-caught fish and shellfish. These foods are rich in B12, iron, zinc, selenium, protein, Vitamin A and more. I just haven't found that restricting all animal foods promotes healing. Also, when animal foods are removed, most people replace them with soy protein, legumes and grains, but these foods can worsen inflammation. As far as yeast-free B-vitamins, I really like the formulas from Thorne Research. They use high-quality, medical-grade ingredients. This one in particular is higher in B12, which is good for people who restrict animal foods: bit.ly/2sgUWgp Best of luck!
